Ferdinand De Saussure was born in Geneva into a family of well-known
scientists. He was born in 1857-1913. He studied Sanskrit and Comparative
linguistics in Geneva.
Semiotics
Semiotics is creating meaning and how meaning is understood by the people to
whom meaning is being communicated. Semiotics is also how symbols such as
letters and numbers to transfer meaning between parties. The term Semiotics
comes from Greek word “Semeiotikos” which means interpreter of signs
Sign & Signifier
Signs are that represents things to us. E.g. To represent “STOP” we use red
light in traffic to show the meaning of stop. Ferdinand De Saussure found out
signs and signifier in university. The theory also was influenced other disciplines
especially anthropology, sociology, and literarycriticism. Saussure theory is that
it can only show signs of the same nature.
