State, County Emergency Services Groups Honor
South Nassau’s Emergency Medicine Chair
Oceanside, NY – Joshua Kugler, M.D., FACEP, FAAEM, chair of the department of emergency
medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital, has been named the recipient of both the New York State
(NYS) Emergency Medical Services Council’s and Nassau County Regional Emergency Medical Services
Council’s 2013 Physician of Excellence Award.
Dr. Kugler earned the awards for his enduring commitment to excellence and leadership in emergency
medicine, which has resulted in the significant improvement of emergency medical services in the community and
throughout the state.
In addition to his role as chair of emergency medicine at South Nassau, Dr. Kugler also serves as the cochair of the ED Steering committee and serves actively across several other integral operational committees,
including EMR steering, utilization and Emergency Management. He is the Medical Director for the Oceanside
Fire Department and supports the Nassau County Police Department.
Dr. Kugler is a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and National Board of Medical
Examiners. He is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of
Emergency Medicine. He is the current Chair of the Nassau Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee
and served as Nassau’s representative to the state emergency medical council for eight years.
Dr. Kugler served in the United States Navy for nine years in both operational and clinical roles. He
completed his service in 1999 as a Lieutenant Commander. His naval medical training was furthered at the Naval
Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute where he was a designated Flight Surgeon in 1997.
Prior to joining South Nassau, Dr. Kugler was the Associate Director of Emergency Medicine at St.
Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY, and draws from clinical experience, which extends to hospitals in
Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Mississippi. Dr. Kugler graduated from Duke University with a Bachelors of
Science and attained his Medical Doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, Dr. Kugler has a
Masters of Science Degree in Health Management from Harvard University.
