Benefits of a Diesel Particulate Filter you need to know
In the environmentally conscious culture we live in, it’s no
longer enough to just do a good job – you have to do a good
job while also being gentle on the environment. Many
companies are going the extra-mile to have sustainable
business policies and practices. Some companies and
industries are easily brought to the mind of the public and
they need to put forth additional effort to be aware of their
effect on the environment in order to maintain grace. When
you’re driving a car and see a semi on the road you are very
aware of them. Few companies are as easily recognizable as
trucking companies. Although people aren’t always able to
identify the brand by sight, they know semis are driving
across the country.
Different types of diesel retrofits
Although, all else equal, diesel engines are more fuel efficient than gasoline engines, people still imagine
diesel as a “dirty” fuel. There are a few main ways to reduce the particulate emission of a diesel engine
including diesel particulate filters (DPFs), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs), selective catalytic reduction
(SCRs), and closed crankcase ventilation (CCV). These are not only good for the environment, but it
benefits the company as well. “Greener” companies tend to gain more
public support.
Diesel Particulate Filter
By far the most the most effective add-on is a diesel particulate filter.
DPF’s reduce emissions of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), hydrocarbons
(HCs), and carbon monoxide (CO) by 60-90%. That was all very technical,
but essentially it makes your exhaust much, much cleaner which is
better for everyone.
Some people are advocating for the removal of DPF’s because they eventually need to be cleaned out,
but the pros far outweigh the cons. Like any device it occasionally needs repairs. However, with recent
advancements in technology during the last decade diesel particulate filters are more efficient than ever
at trapping and eliminating collected soot.
Regeneration
Although many cars in Europe are built with diesel engines and fitted with DPF’s, they are much better
suited for semi-trucks and similar vehicles. The soot and residue is removed by a process called
“regeneration” in which it is burnt off by high heat. There are two types of regeneration, passive and
active. Active regeneration uses fuel to create the high temperatures while passive regeneration relies
on the heat produced by the exhaust. DFP’s that use active regeneration can lower the performance of
the vehicles, but semi-trucks travelling long distance can be greatly benefited by a DPF with passive
regeneration.
Is your fleet equipped with DPF’s? Even if you’re using another diesel retrofit, you should really consider
switching to diesel particulate filters that uses passive regeneration. They are for more efficient at
removing harmful particulates from exhaust compared to other options. Although eventually they do
need to be cleaned out, the benefits of having them installed are numerous. You’ll be seen as a greener
company and that alone can have a direct effect on your bottom-line.
