Motorcycle riders are more vulnerable because of the nature of the vehicle they are riding compared to other motorists. This gives motorcyclists a greater risk of injury during an accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 93,000 motorcyclists were injured in 2012, which is a 15% increase over 2011.
In 1997, 2,116 motorcyclists were killed on our roads and highways. That number has steadily increased each year. By 2005, that number had more than doubled to 4,576 deaths and in 2008 fatalities reached an all-time high of 5,312 deaths.
