Inside this issue:
Message from our
President
In 1 Peter 4:10 he states, “Each one should use whatever gift he
has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace
in its various forms.” Unarguably, we are all here for a reason.
The reason we are called to this profession is more than being able
to start an IV, change a dressing, or administer medications. We
are called not only to be in true presence with our patients, but
also to reach out to the community around us. Through S.O.N.A.,
it is my goal to not only focus on us being students of nursing, but
also children of God. My vision for this club is to find unique
ways to use nursing as a way to spread the word of God through
community outreach and to use the gifts God has given us.
When times get tough, we sometimes forget our purpose as the
hands and feet of God. I can assume that all nursing students
would describe nursing school as pure chaos, a constant battle
between sleeping, eating, and studying. I think at times, all
nursing students start to wonder what they got themselves
into, but quitting is not an option. We were all called by God to
go into this area of study and future profession. Without God,
imagine how much we would truly be struggling to get
through this program. Hebrews 6:10 states, “God is not unjust; He
will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as
you have helped His people and continue to help them”. As we
wrap up this semester with finals, remember to keep your head in
two types of books: your textbooks, and His word. Do not fear
going to Him when you need Him most; continue to live your life
in Him and He will take care of the rest.

Nursing ISP Teams
CBU is committed to accomplishing the Great Commission in which Jesus has commanded His
followers, “to go and make disciples of all nations.” Nursing ISP teams are God’s servants showing His love
through nursing skills and care. Dr. Geneva Oaks, the Dean of Nursing here at CBU has had the first hand
experience of sharing God’s love through providing nursing skills to areas that had not been touched ever
before. She guided the first nursing ISP team which was the start of the ultimate journey for the School of
Nursing. Dr. Oaks and her team knew that what the people of Africa originally wanted was only medical
attention. However, they instead received not only medical attention but an act of love and kindness that they
had never experienced. Dr. Oaks was called to assist with the delivery of a baby that was considered a still
birth because the baby was not breathing or crying. With no medical supplies or equipment available, the only
tools she had was her faith in God and her knowledge of CPR. After multiple attempts, it was a miracle of God
that the baby began to breathe again. The people of this community were amazed at the love that she provided
by her willingness to provide free love and not give up. From then on, ISP has made extreme efforts to
continue to grow more nursing teams to plant seeds of God’s love in the untouched nations.
The theme for ISP this year is “Stand” in which we stand ON the gospel of Christ, stand UP and engage
lostness, and stand FAST through trials THROUGH faith. God gives us the tools necessary to accomplish the
tasks that are in His will. Nursing student, Kayla, had the experience of participating in ISP in the past and
summarized her experience as, “trusting in Him and standing fast in faith is so important if you want the
gospel to reach the lost. We have to remember that it is not about us, but it is about God and His own will and
desire for our lives.” Ephesians 6:13-‐‑17 says, “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his
might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the
devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
places. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand
your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled
around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness
that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Although our professors tried to explain the role of a registered nurse, they couldn’t prepare me for all
that was to come as I worked on a busy Telemetry unit. They told us we would be tired, that not everyone is
called to be an RN, however the most important thing the faculty and staff at the CBU School of Nursing
shared with me was that Jesus has called us to care for those who cannot care for themselves. He has called us
to put others first and walk with them as they live their health. Whether it is a helping hand, a healing touch,
or a simple smile, the CBU School of Nursing pushes it’s students to love anyone placed in their care.
The CBU School of Nursing pushed me to think beyond my little world. To care for those in Riverside,
the Inland Empire, North America, and even beyond the comfort of the US. What a privilege it is to be a
graduate of the CBU School of Nursing. As we take vital signs, start IV lines, or give medications, we not only
have the chance to participate in real healing, we have the opportunity to share Jesus with each patient, family
member or colleague we meet daily.

Matthew 25:35
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and
you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was
naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, …Then
the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord when did we see you
hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?…And the king
will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least
of these my brothers, you did it to me’” (ESV).
As nurses we are presented with unique opportunities to share
the unconditional love of Christ with patients. We can share the love
of Christ through our actions, our words and the way that we provide
care. During your time in clinical I would encourage you intercede on
behalf of your patients in prayer. Pray for healing, their relationship
with God, and pray that God would use you. This prepares your heart
to provide care as the hands and feet of Christ, and allows you to see
Him working in the lives of your patients.
When I entered the nursing program at California Baptist
University, my goal was to come along side my patients during the
darkest times of their lives and to shine the light of Christ. It is very
easy as nursing students to get overwhelmed with the happenings of
the day and loose sight of Christ in our practice. I encourage you to
seek Christ first while you endure the challenges of nursing school.
Just as Christ was faithful to get you through pre-‐‑requisites and allow
your admittance into the nursing program he will be faithful to finish
his work in you. Will you let him?
