SONA NEWSLETTER SPRING 2015
SONA
Newsletter
Spring 2015
By: Brianna De Los Reyes
Inside this issue:
Message from our
President
What’s the point of SONA? I have been asked that question many, many times this
semester. SONA is a club run by nursing students for nursing students. We organize
community events to help you find ways to get involved and to more easily
complete your community service hours. We have on‐campus events to help you
connect with other nursing students, network and meet likeminded people who you
might not otherwise meet. We also organize and send a team to the National
Student Nursing Association conference every year to get a better perspective on
how the nursing profession is growing and changing (you should do it next year!).
SONA is about building connections and fostering relationships with likeminded,
passionate people.
Nursing is a challenging profession. It takes a lot of time, effort, and strength to be
able to succeed and thrive during nursing school. But the struggle is not without a
reward. Nurses are given the unique opportunity of being present at some of life’s
biggest events happen, both births and deaths. We have the privilege of having daily
opportunities to be a light when people need it most, Matthew 5:16 “Let your light
shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your
Father who is in heaven.”
It is easy to get discouraged, spending so much time studying, working on care
plans, and taking test after test, not to mention the quizzes. But I encourage you to
keep in mind why you’re doing all of this. Why do you want to become a nurse? To
make a difference in someone’s life, to be able to experience the highs and lows of
life and offer a comforting hand to hold or smile when someone needs it most, to
see all of the cool procedures and be on the cutting edge of medical science, or
maybe you just love all the medical‐drama TV shows (Grey’s Anatomy, anyone?).
Whatever your reason, know that God has called you to this profession. He chose
you for this unique set of challenges we call nursing school.
“Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as
hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do
with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body,
the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of
Fine Arts.” ‐Florence Nightingale

Fall 2014 1st Semester Adventures
Fred Jordan Mission: Skid Row of Los Angeles Fall 2014
Gold and Blue Cohorts together.  “Skid Row was an eye opening experience and it was great to help support of an
organization that reaches out to a community of those in need” ‐Megan Condron. “We got to take care of many families,
more specifically, children who's families could not afford to provide them with essential needs, such as toothbrush, toothpaste,
shampoo, conditioner, backpacks equipped with school supplies, clothing, shoes from Foot Locker (they were the main sponsor),
and free haircuts. Kids got to walk around and "shop" what they wanted from the selections all for free. Many of the children were
so happy, because they had never owned a brand new pair of shoes, specifically sized for their feet, and to top it off, they were well‐
known brands such as the Jordan or Kobe shoe lines. And if there were any mothers that are still nurturing their babies, we let them
rest and sit in the shade, while we do the "shopping" for them” –Mindy Wu.

NSNA Conference in Pheonix, Arizona.
The CBU School of Nursing program is equipped with professors that are driven to motivate, prepare and
teach us the things that we need to know in order to be successful Registered Nurses in the world today. It is a
privilege to attend a university that is built on the foundation of Christianity in which we are given the
freedom to worship Him and receive quality education that not only challenges us, but prepares us for the
road ahead.
CBU alumni have had the privilege of being employed in the Riverside area, San Bernardino, Orange
County, and other states in the United States.  There are approximately 159 alumni employed in Riverside
County and San Bernardino County out of a total of 242 in the state of California.   Loma Linda Medical Center
currently employs 33 CBU School of Nursing alumni and an additional 12 alumni at Loma Linda Childrenʹs
Hospital.  Outside of Riverside and San Bernardino County, there is 15 alumni employed at CHOC Childrenʹs
in Orange County.  It is inspiring to see where alumni are now and remember the reason we are here, that we
are called to care for others who cannot care for themselves.

"8But let us who live in the light be clearheaded,
protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our
helmet the confidence of our salvation.9For God chose to save
us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on
us. 10Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive
when he returns, we can live with him forever. 11So encourage
each other and build each other up, just as you are already
doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:8-11
In a season of life that seems to revolve around our test and
quiz average, as well as how to master being truly present with
our patients, it's easy for our life priorities to get lost in the
process. It's easy to loose sight of the goal to be the best version
of ourselves, rather than the goal to be the very best.
Paul clearly states in the verse above that we are to live our life
clearheaded, and in the light, building up others in the body of
Christ and in turn, experiencing His goodness for eternity. If we
root ourselves in this simple truth founded on faith, our number
one priority to serve him, will eventually transform us into the
greatest version we can be, living out the call he has created for
each of us.
