Enabling, managing and securing mobility in the public sector isn’t an easy task but it does need attention – and quickly. If you aren’t managing it, your users – from the most senior to the newest junior recruits – will take it into their own hands.
See how we investigate innovations and technologies and show real-life examples of how public sector organisations can support today’s increasingly mobile workforce

42. The challenge: innovation through transformation
• Looking to enhance public service delivery whilst reducing
costs – and encourage economic growth in the region.
• Create a cutting edge, service-oriented IT environment within
the council as well as support local businesses with scalable,
on demand IT services
The solution: a city-wide cloud services infrastructure
• Introduced virtual desktops across the organisation – can also
offer IT-as-a-Service to local schools, businesses, social
enterprises and health authorities.
Key benefit: an innovative IT environment supporting
the entire community
• Achieved an overall savings target of £58 million in 2011 and
£28 million in 2012 across the organisation.
• Sunderland's cloud platform is expected to reduce IT
operational costs by £1.4m annually over the next five years

43. The challenge: enhancing efficiency and flexibility to better
serve the public
• In the decade since devolution, the Welsh Government has
undertaken many diverse initiatives. The organization needed
to become more efficient, flexible and standardized and
upgrade its legacy technology
• Wanted to achieve a “work anywhere” environment to give
employees the freedom to connect to information resources
from any government office, as well as from home or while in
transit.
The Solution: Implementing a Citrix virtual computing
environment
• Adopted a virtual computing platform for applications and
desktops delivered over a shared Public Sector Network
(PSBA Wales) using cloud technologies to more than 50
locations across Wales.
Key Benefit: Enhancing government responsiveness and
efficiency
• Enhanced service capabilities as staff can securely and
reliably access core applications from any Welsh Government
location
