2. History
Universal Music was once originally known as MCA records
when it was attached to Universal Pictures. Its origins go back to
when the American branch of Decca Records in 1934 was
established. MCA Inc. bought American Decca in 1962 which led
to the present organization being formed when its parent
company Seagram bought PolyGram and merged it with
Universal Music Group in 1998. However, the name made it’s
debut in 1996 when MCA Music Entertainment Group was
renamed Universal Music Group. The PolyGram acquisition
included Deutsche Grammophon which can be traced to
Berliner Gramophone making Deutsche Grammophon UMG's
oldest unit which is it’s Canadian unit which comes from a
Berliner Gramophone breakaway firm the Compo Company.

4. Location
The main headquarters for the entire company can be
located at Santa Monica in Los Angles in 2220 South
Avenue. This place oversees all of the legal obligations
in the US and Canada such as Human Resources, and
any legal issues surrounding the company. Smaller
companies such as the Verve Music Group are based at
their LA headquarters with Jimmy Iovine heading
Interscope-Geffen-A&M and David Foster heading
Verve. Other bases can be located at London,
Hollywood, Universal City and New York City.
