- 1. Drylands Systems CRP – Scientific Planning Meeting WAS&DS Summary Report & Planned activities
- 2. Activities carried out • Participation in various iIRT/IRT meetings • Collation of background data on Fakara (one of the satellite sites for KKM action transect) and contribution to groundwork report • Organization of stakeholders’ consultation meeting in Fakara for the groundwork in April 2012 • Participation in regional inception workshop. ILRI sponsored 4 participants • ILRI internal CRP DS meeting in Nairobi on 7 Sept 2012 – planning meeting to coordinate ILRI’s strategy and to provide updates on ILRI background work in 3 regions (East and Southern Africa, West Africa and South Asia)

Activities carried out • Participation in CRP DS West Africa methodology workshop in Niamey, 17 – 19 September 2012 by ICRISAT • ILRI internal meeting on assessing the success of Innovation Platforms, Nairobi Dec 6,7 2012. All of the actors within ILRI who have worked or intend to use IP participated. Objectives: 1. Critically examine WHY ILRI uses innovation platforms in its R4D projects— what outcomes and outputs have we tried to achieve? 2. How have we evaluated the success and impact of innovation platforms? 3. What problems have we encountered using innovation platforms? 4. What have we learned? What do we need to do differently to achieve the desired outcomes and impacts through innovation platforms?
- 4. Activities carried out • Participation in WAS&DS Planning meeting in March, 2013 • Contribution to CRP DS for WAS&DS household survey instruments especially livestock component • Participation in CRP DS Launch Meeting, Amman, Jordan
- 5. On-going Activities • Recruitment of a PhD student to work on Climate Risk and the Effect of Institutional Arrangements on the Coping Capacity of Smallholder Agropastoralists in West African Sahel – University of Wisconsin, Madison • Objectives of the thesis - to identify aspects of local institutions that impact the ability of local livelihoods to cope with climate variability - examine how institutional ambiguity among community institutions, local government, and national legislation shapes the livelihood security of different social groups • Approach - household surveys, environmental data on resource variability, social network analysis, and case studies of local conventions

On-going Activities • Review and synthesis of ILRI long-term (1994 – 2008) systems research activities in Fakara, southwestern Niger: Learning from the past - Consultant (Pierre Hiernaux, France) + AA • Deliverables - Database on systems research in Fakara from 1994 till now - Synthesis report on systems research in Fakara and in the West African Sahel in general identifying gaps and recommendations for future research • Fakara has a rich history of agricultural research from the late 1980s till now by different institutions • ILRI Niger in 1990s: multi-disciplinary team of 6 scientists (animal scientist, range ecologist/agronomist, agric. economist, geographer/anthropologist, soil

Planned Activities 2013 • Review of past Systemwide Livestock Program (SLP) projects on crop-livestock intensification in West Africa Sahel and Dry Savanna • Assessment of trade-offs in resource use in the farming systems - Modelling (FARMSIM & LIVSIM developed by WUR) • Vulnerability and risk assessment including indigenous knowledge on coping strategies • Analysis of promising crop-livestock value chains in the action sites • IP establishment and facilitation to enhance effective linkages and knowledge exchange among different actors
