     Parrots are known for their
    bright colors and loud calls.
    Today there are more than
    353 species of parrots alive.
    Parrots consists of
    lorikeets, cockatiels, cockato
    os, parakeets, budgerigars
    and macaws. There are
    more than 1500 species of
    birds found in the Amazon
    Basin today. Many birds
    migrate from the north and
    south and can only be seen
    during certain times of the
    year.
 Mainlyfound in tropical and subtropical
 regions
  • Such as South America, Australia and Asia.
 Habitat must be very large and abundant
  with trees
 Nest in cavities in trees, & crevices in
  rocks and cliffs
 Some parrots such as Macaws are more
  common on the edges of the forest
  • Edges by open clearings and watercourse
 Short necks, curved bills, and
  large heads
 Colorful feathers
  • Enables birds to fly
  • Protect birds from elements such as weather
  • Act as camouflage
 Zygodactyl feet
   • Two toes point forward and two toes point backwards
   • Common in tree-dwelling birds to help them move
    about
 Parrots reproduce by laying eggs
 Parrots are monogamous
  • One mate
 Form   strong bonds as pairs
  • Bond carries onto the non-breeding season
 Courtship    Displays
  • Clean each others wings
  • Communication
   Parrots use their strong
    beaks to crack open
    shells and grind up their
    food
   Some parrots are
    specialized nectar feeders
    • Able to pick up nectar with
        brush-like tips on their
        tongues
   Most parrots feed on:
    •
        seeds, fruits, grass, leaves,
        and plant shoots found
        throughout the forests
 Awaken  before sunrise
 Disperse to feeding areas
  • Spend the first few hours of the day foraging
 After feeding they engage in social
  interaction, bathing or drinking
 Feed again in the afternoon
 Loud interaction before going to sleep
 Possess    the largest
  number of threatened
  species of any bird
  family
 90 species at risk of
  global extinction
 Collection of bird for

  habitat loss are the 2
  major threats parrots
  face

Ecology of tropical parrots
