BlogsBlogsI went to 6 southeast and it was
probably the worst experience. If
anything going to 6 southeast
made me realize that nursing in a
hospital really is not for me. In a
way I do appreciate the
experience because it did show
me that not everyone is going to
be nice, and alls you can do is
keep your head up and get
through the situation.
I was in 5 southeast this week and it
was way better than last week. There
was very little going on but the nurses
I had were very fun and inspirational.
They let me right some stuff down
and they showed me how to right
down stuff on the computer. They also
answered a lot of my questions about
nursing and if I would want a future
career in it.
This week I was at five southeast... again. I read the schedule wrong and
ended up at the wrong place. But this week was very productive. I got to
see a lot of different people my first day. We discharged four people and
got to teach someone how to stick themselves with a needle. The second
day I was with the same nurse for thirty minutes then she went to lunch,
and I was with a nurse named Karen and alls she did was chart. She
counted me down because I wasn't acting interested in her charting.

Cassunta1@gmail.comSubject: Dental Hygienist
I am pursuing a career as a Dental Hygienist; included behind this is my resume and
references.
My background in science consists of: Physical Science, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology,
and Chemistry. My math background consists of: Algebra I, Honors Geometry, Honors
Algebra II, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra. I have also been studying five days a
week at the St. Francis and St. Joe Hospital Via Christi Health, two of those days I shadow a
professional in their field such as: Pediatrics, Emergency Room, Physical Therapy, and many
others totaling sixteen units. The other three days are spent in the classroom working on
thank you cards, blogging, studying, and many other activities.
My work experience consists of babysitting from 2000 till now. My experiences
through babysitting have taught me patience and how to work with all types of individuals.
These experiences have also taught me how to relate to all different age groups, and how to
anticipate their individual needs. The opportunity to work with children for such a long period
of time has taught me many rehabilitation tools such as daily living activities; giving baths,
changing diapers, and feeding young children. Life guarding at Rockwood Recreational
Facility for three years has also given me some very insightful work experience. I have
worked there from 2007 till now. Life guarding requires me to be Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation Certified, Automated External Defibrillator Trained, and be certified in Food
Handling. My last employment is at Tan Do Salon. I have worked there from 2009 till now.
Tan Do is a tanning salon and requires me to interact others, and be well informed on the
different issues on tanning.
I am looking forward to meeting with you. You can contact me through email at
cassunta1@gmail.com.

Career List (1)Career List (1)
The first job that I am interested in is dental hygienist. This job interests
because I have always been obsessed with teeth. I was an obsessive
compulsive brusher, and I think this job would really interest me. I also
feel like I would enjoy doing the work. The school requirements for this
job are an associate’s degree and this is considered the standard
training for hygienists. Typical coursework for dental hygienist training
programs includes orofacial anatomy, dental radiology, head and neck
anatomy, periodontics, dental materials, and microbiology. Some
experience that would help me would be volunteering in a dentists
office, and shadowing a dental hygienist.

Career (2)Career (2)
The second job I am interested in is an entry-level nursing degree.
Helping people and learning about the body are both things I really enjoy
doing. There are three different entry-level nursing degree paths offered
by different nursing schools. The most popular one is the four year BSN.
This is the preferred entry-level nursing program by most nursing leaders,
because it offers the best opportunities in today’s job market. The four
year BSN is the entry point for professional nursing practice. A bachelor’s
in nursing degree also provides you with a strong platform for career
advancement and higher level degrees. A four BSN usually takes four
years to complete. During the first two years, students typically take
general education courses to fulfill college requirements. Then the last two
years are spent specifically on the science of nursing and principles of
nursing practice to fulfill the bachelors in nursing degree. Some work
experience that would help would be volunteering in a hospital or doctors
office. I could also shadow a nurse with this degree, and talk to them
about the expectations I should expect.

Career (3)Career (3)
The third job that I am interested in is massage therapy. I am interested in this
job because it allows you to work with others and the human body. I think it
would be really interesting to study the body, and different ways to help and heal
it. The school requirements for a student interested in this training are in the use
of proper body mechanics for their own well-being and injury prevention. In
addition, students are taught sanitation procedures, First Aid and become
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified. The Diploma and Associate of
Applied Science Degree programs equip the graduate with the skills and
knowledge necessary to meet the requirements of an entry level Massage
Therapist. Graduates of these programs are prepared to seek positions in a wide
range of health-related workplaces, such as: sports medicine clinics, pain
management clinics, hospice facilities, Orthopedic offices, Physical Therapy
offices, nursing homes, naturopathic clinics, Chiropractic offices and Psychiatric
offices. In addition, Massage Therapists may be employed in athletic clubs,
resorts, spas, yoga retreat centers, golf courses, beauty salons, dance studios,
and cruise ships. This program prepares the graduate for the National
Certification Exam of Theraputic Massage and Bodywork, (NCETMB). Some work
experience I could get would be to volunteer in a place that has massage
therapists. http://www.anthem.edu/programs/massage-
therapy/associate-of-applied-science-degree/
Career (4)Career (4)
The fourth job that I am interested in is phyiscal therapy. I am interested in this
because I think working with and learning about the body is interesting. I also
think that it would be a fun job that would allow you to work with others, and
meet lots of people. Requirements for this job are entrants to this profession
need a post-basccalaureate degree from an accredited physical therapist
program. The American Physical Therapy Association’s accrediting body, called
the Commisson on Accreditation of Physical Therayp Education, accredits entry-
level academic programs in physical therapy. Physical therapist education
programs include foundational science course, such as biology, anatomy,
physiology, cellular histology, exercise physiology, neuroscience… and so on.
Among the undergradiate courses that are useful when one applies to a physical
therapst education education program. Physical therapists provide care to
people of all ages who have functional problems resulting from injuries to the
body. Physical therapists practice in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and private
offices. Physical therapists should have strong interpersonal and communication
skills, so they can educate patients about their condition and physical therapy
treatments and communicate with patients families. Some experience I could get
would be volunteering where there are physical therapists and shadowing one.

Career (5)Career (5)
The fifth job that I am interested in is being an orthodontist. I am interested in
this job because I think the human mouth is fascinating, and I think teeth are
really interesting. Job requirements for becoming an orthodontist are you most
complete an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
Although there are no specific requirements on the exact degree you must
achieve in order to apply for a graduate degree in dentistry, you must take a
certain number of classes in biology, chemistry, and physics. You must
complete a three to four year graduate degree at a dental school in order to
achieve either a DDS or a DMD. You must also complete at least a two year
residency program accredited by the American Dental Association. These
programs are intensely competitive and will provide the speciality training
required to be an orthodontist. Once you have become an orthodontist, you will
need to take a certain number of continuing courses every year in order to
maintain your license. These courses will kepp you up to date on new
treatments and diseases in the field. Some experience I could get would
shadowing or volunteering at an orthodintist office.
http://www.ehow.com/facts_5006210_orthodontist-schooling-
requirements.html
Career (6)Career (6)
The sixth job I am interested in is a dentist. I think that working with
people’s mouths would be very interesting. The job requirements
necessary for this job is taking high school biology, chemistry, physics,
health and mathematics courses, and maintain a high grade point
average in high school. After accomplishing this you should seek
information on colleges that have a two-year pre-dental program the
emphasizes the sciences. Most pre-dental students complete a bachelor’s
degree. Then commit yourself to receiving high grades in college,
espcially in science. Next contact the ADA for a list of 4 year dental
schools accredited by the CDA. Then take the Dental Admissions Test.
Understand that the first two years in dental school will consist of
classroom and lab courses. The final two years are spent in clinics under
the supervision of licensed dentist. Obtain your license by passing
additonal written and practical state examinations after you’ve graduated
from dental school. I can obtain experience by volunteering and
shadowing a dentist. http://www.ehow.com/how_7978_become-
dentist.html

Dr. Summerhouse on Friday, September 17, came to our class to inform us on his personal
experiences with being a family doctor, and how to become a doctor. He was a family practice
doctor for thirty-five years. Dr. Summerhouse really enjoyed his work, and helping people.During
Dr. Summerhouse’s speech he told us about three types of people who care for patients. Dr.
Summerhouse also informed us on the amount of school each position needed. The first one is an
advanced training nurse. This can also be known as an RN and the amount of schooling necessary
is two years. The second is a Physicians Assistant, also known as a PA, and it requires four years of
schooling. The third is an actual doctor. MDs and Dos require four years of college. Some other
examples are Chiropractors, and they just work on backs. An MD does surgery and passes out
pills. There is also a DO and they can do both. DOs were started by MDs. Here are some random
facts that Dr. Summerhouse informed us of. Dr. Summerhouse informed us that each medical
school has certain requirements. He also told us that if you graduate, you will be called a doctor
but you can’t always see patients, and in each state you have to own a license. There is a
hierarchy among doctors, and the main Doctor is in charge, and all the younger doctors do what
everything they say. We also learned that Family Practice doctors are expected to know
everything, unlike surgeons who just do surgery. He also told us that little training – little pay, and
more training more pay. The lowest paid doctors are pediatrics. The main hours for doctors and
nurses are work twelve hours, and then twelve hours off. The funniest thing he said all say was
that most doctors wish they could be home with their families and watch their children grow… not
Dr. Summerhouse. He didn’t care. ;)

On Friday October 1, 2010, we had a speaker come in and talk to us about the different fields of
psychology, and how she became interested in it. The first field Carrissa Coleman told us about
was community psychology. This is the field that she is interested in, and has been pursuing since
studying at KU. At KU, she was very interested in science, but she did not want to work in a lab.
The science degree she was interested in was biology, especially the behavior aspect of it. She
took psychology classes, and this led to her taking a job in social services. In social services, she
became a case manager for a HIV agency. She said that she liked helping people, but she did not
want to be one on one. The next step in her life was to move to California. Here she worked at a
children’s mental health agency. Then she decided to move back to Wichita, Kansas, and attend
Wichita State University. Our speaker was very helpful, and I really like that she told us about the
things she would have done differently. She told us to get into psychology early, and find what
population we are really interested in. We also discussed the other types of psychology. The first
and most popular is clinical psychology. This requires a Doctrine (PHD). In this field you mainly
work with meeting clients, one on one, and help people cope with daily living. Another type of
psychology is Developmental. This shows you how to help with children who have emotional or
physical abuse. They also help adults with aging, relationships, and especially those in nursing
homes. Our speaker is doing her dissertation on CNAs coping with residents. This includes helping
them with activities of daily living, just helping the resident CNA relationship, and putting the
person before the task. She is also helping to train CNAs in Wichita and in Manhattan.

  • 13. BlogsBlogsI went to 6 southeast and it was probably the worst experience. If anything going to 6 southeast made me realize that nursing in a hospital really is not for me. In a way I do appreciate the experience because it did show me that not everyone is going to be nice, and alls you can do is keep your head up and get through the situation. I was in 5 southeast this week and it was way better than last week. There was very little going on but the nurses I had were very fun and inspirational. They let me right some stuff down and they showed me how to right down stuff on the computer. They also answered a lot of my questions about nursing and if I would want a future career in it. This week I was at five southeast... again. I read the schedule wrong and ended up at the wrong place. But this week was very productive. I got to see a lot of different people my first day. We discharged four people and got to teach someone how to stick themselves with a needle. The second day I was with the same nurse for thirty minutes then she went to lunch, and I was with a nurse named Karen and alls she did was chart. She counted me down because I wasn't acting interested in her charting.

I have also been studying five days a week at the St. Francis and St. Joe Hospital Via Christi Health, two of those days I shadow a professional in their field such as: Pediatrics, Emergency Room, Physical Therapy, and many others totaling sixteen units. The other three days are spent in the classroom working on thank you cards, blogging, studying, and many other activities. My work experience consists of babysitting from 2000 till now. My experiences through babysitting have taught me patience and how to work with all types of individuals. These experiences have also taught me how to relate to all different age groups, and how to anticipate their individual needs. The opportunity to work with children for such a long period of time has taught me many rehabilitation tools such as daily living activities; giving baths, changing diapers, and feeding young children. Life guarding at Rockwood Recreational Facility for three years has also given me some very insightful work experience. I have worked there from 2007 till now. Life guarding requires me to be Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certified, Automated External Defibrillator Trained, and be certified in Food Handling. My last employment is at Tan Do Salon. I have worked there from 2009 till now. Tan Do is a tanning salon and requires me to interact others, and be well informed on the different issues on tanning. I am looking forward to meeting with you. You can contact me through email at cassunta1@gmail.com. Best Regards, Cabrini Ferraro

  • 31. Career List (1)Career List (1) The first job that I am interested in is dental hygienist. This job interests because I have always been obsessed with teeth. I was an obsessive compulsive brusher, and I think this job would really interest me. I also feel like I would enjoy doing the work. The school requirements for this job are an associate’s degree and this is considered the standard training for hygienists. Typical coursework for dental hygienist training programs includes orofacial anatomy, dental radiology, head and neck anatomy, periodontics, dental materials, and microbiology. Some experience that would help me would be volunteering in a dentists office, and shadowing a dental hygienist. http://www.collegegrad.com/careers/proft91.shtml
  • 32. Career (2)Career (2) The second job I am interested in is an entry-level nursing degree. Helping people and learning about the body are both things I really enjoy doing. There are three different entry-level nursing degree paths offered by different nursing schools. The most popular one is the four year BSN. This is the preferred entry-level nursing program by most nursing leaders, because it offers the best opportunities in today’s job market. The four year BSN is the entry point for professional nursing practice. A bachelor’s in nursing degree also provides you with a strong platform for career advancement and higher level degrees. A four BSN usually takes four years to complete. During the first two years, students typically take general education courses to fulfill college requirements. Then the last two years are spent specifically on the science of nursing and principles of nursing practice to fulfill the bachelors in nursing degree. Some work experience that would help would be volunteering in a hospital or doctors office. I could also shadow a nurse with this degree, and talk to them about the expectations I should expect. http://www.allnursingschools.com/nursing-resources/programs
  • 33. Career (3)Career (3) The third job that I am interested in is massage therapy. I am interested in this job because it allows you to work with others and the human body. I think it would be really interesting to study the body, and different ways to help and heal it. The school requirements for a student interested in this training are in the use of proper body mechanics for their own well-being and injury prevention. In addition, students are taught sanitation procedures, First Aid and become Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified. The Diploma and Associate of Applied Science Degree programs equip the graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the requirements of an entry level Massage Therapist. Graduates of these programs are prepared to seek positions in a wide range of health-related workplaces, such as: sports medicine clinics, pain management clinics, hospice facilities, Orthopedic offices, Physical Therapy offices, nursing homes, naturopathic clinics, Chiropractic offices and Psychiatric offices. In addition, Massage Therapists may be employed in athletic clubs, resorts, spas, yoga retreat centers, golf courses, beauty salons, dance studios, and cruise ships. This program prepares the graduate for the National Certification Exam of Theraputic Massage and Bodywork, (NCETMB). Some work experience I could get would be to volunteer in a place that has massage therapists. http://www.anthem.edu/programs/massage- therapy/associate-of-applied-science-degree/

I also think that it would be a fun job that would allow you to work with others, and meet lots of people. Requirements for this job are entrants to this profession need a post-basccalaureate degree from an accredited physical therapist program. The American Physical Therapy Association’s accrediting body, called the Commisson on Accreditation of Physical Therayp Education, accredits entry- level academic programs in physical therapy. Among the undergradiate courses that are useful when one applies to a physical therapst education education program. Physical therapists provide care to people of all ages who have functional problems resulting from injuries to the body. • 36. Career (6)Career (6) The sixth job I am interested in is a dentist. I think that working with people’s mouths would be very interesting. The job requirements necessary for this job is taking high school biology, chemistry, physics, health and mathematics courses, and maintain a high grade point average in high school. After accomplishing this you should seek information on colleges that have a two-year pre-dental program the emphasizes the sciences. Most pre-dental students complete a bachelor’s degree. Then commit yourself to receiving high grades in college, espcially in science. Next contact the ADA for a list of 4 year dental schools accredited by the CDA. Then take the Dental Admissions Test. Understand that the first two years in dental school will consist of classroom and lab courses. The final two years are spent in clinics under the supervision of licensed dentist. Obtain your license by passing additonal written and practical state examinations after you’ve graduated from dental school. I can obtain experience by volunteering and shadowing a dentist. http://www.ehow.com/how_7978_become- dentist.html
  • 37. Lecture SummariesLecture Summaries Dr. Summerhouse on Friday, September 17, came to our class to inform us on his personal experiences with being a family doctor, and how to become a doctor. He was a family practice doctor for thirty-five years. Dr. Summerhouse really enjoyed his work, and helping people.During Dr. Summerhouse’s speech he told us about three types of people who care for patients. Dr. Summerhouse also informed us on the amount of school each position needed. The first one is an advanced training nurse. This can also be known as an RN and the amount of schooling necessary is two years. The second is a Physicians Assistant, also known as a PA, and it requires four years of schooling. The third is an actual doctor. MDs and Dos require four years of college. Some other examples are Chiropractors, and they just work on backs. An MD does surgery and passes out pills. There is also a DO and they can do both. DOs were started by MDs. Here are some random facts that Dr. Summerhouse informed us of. Dr. Summerhouse informed us that each medical school has certain requirements. He also told us that if you graduate, you will be called a doctor but you can’t always see patients, and in each state you have to own a license. There is a hierarchy among doctors, and the main Doctor is in charge, and all the younger doctors do what everything they say. We also learned that Family Practice doctors are expected to know everything, unlike surgeons who just do surgery. He also told us that little training – little pay, and more training more pay. The lowest paid doctors are pediatrics. The main hours for doctors and nurses are work twelve hours, and then twelve hours off. The funniest thing he said all say was that most doctors wish they could be home with their families and watch their children grow… not Dr. Summerhouse. He didn’t care. ;)
  • 38. Lecture SummariesLecture Summaries On Friday October 1, 2010, we had a speaker come in and talk to us about the different fields of psychology, and how she became interested in it. The first field Carrissa Coleman told us about was community psychology. This is the field that she is interested in, and has been pursuing since studying at KU. At KU, she was very interested in science, but she did not want to work in a lab. The science degree she was interested in was biology, especially the behavior aspect of it. She took psychology classes, and this led to her taking a job in social services. In social services, she became a case manager for a HIV agency. She said that she liked helping people, but she did not want to be one on one. The next step in her life was to move to California. Here she worked at a children’s mental health agency. Then she decided to move back to Wichita, Kansas, and attend Wichita State University. Our speaker was very helpful, and I really like that she told us about the things she would have done differently. She told us to get into psychology early, and find what population we are really interested in. We also discussed the other types of psychology. The first and most popular is clinical psychology. This requires a Doctrine (PHD). In this field you mainly work with meeting clients, one on one, and help people cope with daily living. Another type of psychology is Developmental. This shows you how to help with children who have emotional or physical abuse. They also help adults with aging, relationships, and especially those in nursing homes. Our speaker is doing her dissertation on CNAs coping with residents. This includes helping them with activities of daily living, just helping the resident CNA relationship, and putting the person before the task. She is also helping to train CNAs in Wichita and in Manhattan.
