                       En Route in Manhattan,
                   Pilgrims Traverse the Big Apple
By Ron LaJoie in Catholic New York
Mario Bruschi couldn't believe the coincidence when he checked his e-mail first thing Saturday
morning before heading uptown to help lead some 150 pilgrims downtown from the St. Frances
Xavier Cabrini Shrine in northern Manhattan to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine at Battery
Park on the first Pilgrimage of New York. In his inbox was this thought for the day from the St.
Padre Pio Web site: "Some people go to paradise by train and some by car; however, some others go
on foot. The latter, however, have more merit than the former and obtain the highest place of glory
                                   in paradise."

The vast majority of those taking part in this uniquely New York
urban pilgrimage ended up opting to travel via the MTA for at
least part of their journey of faith

On an unseasonably warm day of abundant sunshine, the mostly
young adults from across the archdiocese and beyond made the
approximately 13 to 15-mile trek, depending on the route taken,
from the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Washington Heights to
the Mother Seton Shrine in lower Manhattan.

Organized by a coalition of Catholic Young Adult groups led by
the Cathedral of St. Patrick Young Adults, the Pilgrimage of New
York was the brainchild of Chris Lowney, a writer, former Jesuit
seminarian and former managing director at J.P. Morgan &
Company. Lowney's visit to the St. Patrick's Young Adults a
couple of years ago to talk about his own attempted 500-mile
pilgrimage from the French border to Santiago de Compostela in
Spain in 2006 spurred interest among the group in doing a
                                              pilgrimage here.

"Mario Bruschi said, 'People are going to get interested in the idea
of doing a pilgrimage, but people can't fly to Spain. So, is there
something that people could do in New York?' " explained Lowney as he walked along Fort
Washington Avenue early in the pilgrimage.

"It just crossed my mind that we have saints to celebrate right here in this place and they are
geographically beautifully situated," Lowney said. "One is at one end of Manhattan and the other is

                                                                                                                      1

at the other, so what if people just did a pilgrimage from one to the other? They'll learn about the
history of the Church in New York. They'll learn about the geography. But at the end of the day our
hope is this will be an experience of spiritual growth for people."

Needless to say, New York's landscape provides a lot of temptations that could lead even the most
devoted pilgrim off the path. But this pilgrimage actually picked up marchers as it moved along.

Support "Spring for Swaziland" in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
The following was submitted by CMF donor, Katie McCaskie:

After spending a month with Cabrini Ministries in Swaziland in 2008, I was determined to find a way
to support their amazing work. Please join me on April 28th at 7:30 p.m. in Brooklyn
(http://nitanitabk.com) for "Spring for Swaziland,"
a benefit to support the Cabrini Ministry programs
serving orphaned and vulnerable youth.

There will be fabulous silent auction and raffle items,
including private yoga and Pilates classes; artwork by
Brooklyn artists; wine tastings; gift certificates and more!

The proceeds will go to support children through Cabrini
Ministries Swaziland. Their holistic model includes food
and shelter, as well as psychosocial services, educational
sponsorship, and collaboration with and support for
children's remaining family members. Swaziland has the
highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the world at almost 30% of
the population. Current statistics estimate that over
60,000 children have been orphaned in Swaziland (a
country of 1 million) as a result of HIV/AIDS.

If you cannot attend, but would like to donate,
please contact the Cabrini Mission Foundation at

Prayer Requests
Paul Bethany
Paul, the 45 year-old son of Cabrini College professor Dr. Adeline Bethany, was in a serious
accident last week while riding his bike. He has undergone surgery to repair the injuries to
his hip/pelvis which have been reconstructed and secured with plates and pins. He has been
assured that with therapy he will be able to walk. A follow up surgery took place earlier this
week. Please accompany Paul, Adeline and their family with prayer as he recovers and
        undergoes therapy.

Millie Matrangolo
Nick Vendikos, President of Cabrini Mission Foundation, requests prayers for his
aunt/godmother, Millie Matrangolo, who is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation
        treatment.

Tom McGowan
Your continuing prayers are requested for Tom McGowan, husband of Cabrini Lay
Missionary Marianne McGowan. Tom was admitted to Intensive Care last week quite
unexpectedly following an outpatient procedure. With each day, Tom is showing
improvement, but still has a long recovery. Marianne continues to ask for your prayerful
        support.

Brianna Polit
Sr. Regina Peterson, MSC asks the Cabrinian Community to pray for Brianna, the daughter
of her friend, Marcy Polit. Marcy herself is a cancer survivor (brain tumor), and now on the
10th anniversary of her own diagnosis, her 17 year-old daughter, Brianna, was diagnosed
with a cancerous tumor growing around her heart. The grace is that the growth is diagnosed
as a Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma treatable with intense chemo over a 2 year period, the most
critical being the first six (6) months. Please keep Brianna and all the family in prayer
        through this very difficult time.

                                 In Loving Memory
Connie Galetta
Your prayers are requested for Connie Galetta, long time parishioner of Sacred Hearts-St.
Stephen's Parish, Brooklyn, who went home to God. Please pray for her family members
        too, especially her husband, Joe.

Marisa Sanchez
Please remember in your prayers the family of Marisa Sanchez from Connorsville, IN,
United States Merchant Marine Academy, Class of 2013. She passed away suddenly at the

  • 1.                     www.mothercabrini.org                                                          www.cabrinifoundation.org    En Route in Manhattan, Pilgrims Traverse the Big Apple By Ron LaJoie in Catholic New York Mario Bruschi couldn't believe the coincidence when he checked his e-mail first thing Saturday morning before heading uptown to help lead some 150 pilgrims downtown from the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Shrine in northern Manhattan to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine at Battery Park on the first Pilgrimage of New York. In his inbox was this thought for the day from the St. Padre Pio Web site: "Some people go to paradise by train and some by car; however, some others go on foot. The latter, however, have more merit than the former and obtain the highest place of glory in paradise." The vast majority of those taking part in this uniquely New York urban pilgrimage ended up opting to travel via the MTA for at least part of their journey of faith On an unseasonably warm day of abundant sunshine, the mostly young adults from across the archdiocese and beyond made the approximately 13 to 15-mile trek, depending on the route taken, from the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Washington Heights to the Mother Seton Shrine in lower Manhattan. Organized by a coalition of Catholic Young Adult groups led by the Cathedral of St. Patrick Young Adults, the Pilgrimage of New York was the brainchild of Chris Lowney, a writer, former Jesuit seminarian and former managing director at J.P. Morgan & Company. Lowney's visit to the St. Patrick's Young Adults a couple of years ago to talk about his own attempted 500-mile pilgrimage from the French border to Santiago de Compostela in Spain in 2006 spurred interest among the group in doing a pilgrimage here. "Mario Bruschi said, 'People are going to get interested in the idea of doing a pilgrimage, but people can't fly to Spain. So, is there something that people could do in New York?' " explained Lowney as he walked along Fort Washington Avenue early in the pilgrimage. "It just crossed my mind that we have saints to celebrate right here in this place and they are geographically beautifully situated," Lowney said. "One is at one end of Manhattan and the other is 1

But at the end of the day our hope is this will be an experience of spiritual growth for people." Needless to say, New York's landscape provides a lot of temptations that could lead even the most devoted pilgrim off the path. But this pilgrimage actually picked up marchers as it moved along. • 4. Cabrini Health, Australia Stories from the Heart ♥ Occasionally, we receive vignettes sent to us by Cabrini Health, which are of great human interest. These stories, entitled “Stories from the Heart” are aimed primarily at the Cabrini Health staff and are posted on their intranet site. From time to time, we take pleasure in sharing these with the wider Cabrinian Community. Enjoy! Cabrini Health Ranked High by First Time Moms Last year 1,400 babies were born in the Maternity Unit at Cabrini Malvern, which is staffed by a team of experienced and dedicated midwives as well as specialist consultant obstetricians and pediatricians. Cabrini’s modern delivery suites are designed to provide for each mother’s individual needs during labor. Our nursery is fully equipped with the latest technology to provide care for premature and ill infants. “...I'm so appreciative of the Cabrini midwives.” says Kate Nixon, “...the staff couldn't have been more assuring and sympathetic...the end result is the best thing in the whole world – Audrey. I am eternally grateful to all the staff at Cabrini.” It’s therefore not surprising that Cabrini Malvern was voted Kate Nixon is pictured the best maternity hospital in the State of Victoria according here with her preemie to a recent survey of new moms conducted by the Australia’s most daughter Audrey. • 5. Cabrini Mission Foundation, New York, NY Support "Spring for Swaziland" in Williamsburg, Brooklyn The following was submitted by CMF donor, Katie McCaskie: After spending a month with Cabrini Ministries in Swaziland in 2008, I was determined to find a way to support their amazing work. Please join me on April 28th at 7:30 p.m. in Brooklyn (http://nitanitabk.com) for "Spring for Swaziland," a benefit to support the Cabrini Ministry programs serving orphaned and vulnerable youth. There will be fabulous silent auction and raffle items, including private yoga and Pilates classes; artwork by Brooklyn artists; wine tastings; gift certificates and more! The proceeds will go to support children through Cabrini Ministries Swaziland. • 6. Prayer Requests Paul Bethany Paul, the 45 year-old son of Cabrini College professor Dr. Adeline Bethany, was in a serious accident last week while riding his bike. He has undergone surgery to repair the injuries to his hip/pelvis which have been reconstructed and secured with plates and pins. He has been assured that with therapy he will be able to walk. A follow up surgery took place earlier this week. Please accompany Paul, Adeline and their family with prayer as he recovers and undergoes therapy. Millie Matrangolo  Nick Vendikos, President of Cabrini Mission Foundation, requests prayers for his aunt/godmother, Millie Matrangolo, who is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Tom McGowan Your continuing prayers are requested for Tom McGowan, husband of Cabrini Lay Missionary Marianne McGowan. Tom was admitted to Intensive Care last week quite unexpectedly following an outpatient procedure. With each day, Tom is showing improvement, but still has a long recovery. Marianne continues to ask for your prayerful support. Brianna Polit Sr. Regina Peterson, MSC asks the Cabrinian Community to pray for Brianna, the daughter of her friend, Marcy Polit. Marcy herself is a cancer survivor (brain tumor), and now on the 10th anniversary of her own diagnosis, her 17 year-old daughter, Brianna, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor growing around her heart.
