2. Powerscourt is one of the most beautiful estates in
Ireland. Situated in the mountains of County
Wicklow just 20km from Dublin City Centre.
Where Powerscourt House stands today there
once stood a 13th century medieval castle.
Originally owned by the Le Poer family from
which Powerscourt takes it’s name, it then passed
to the Wingfield family where they remained for
over 300 years.
Bought in 1961 by the Slazenger family it has
become a thriving and bustling tourism destination
to travelers from all around the globe.
3. The gardens at Powerscourt were laid out
over two main periods. Many of the people
involved in their creation and development
never saw the gardens completed in their
lifetime. When the house was rebuilt in the
decade after 1731, the surrounding grounds
were also remodeled.
The design reflected the desire to create a
garden which was part of the wider
landscape. And what a view it is! To the
north formal tree plantations framed the
vista from the house, while a walled garden,
fish pond, cascades, grottos and terraces
lay to the south. Walks wound through the
wooded grounds and a fine tree lined
avenue was created. When you arrive at the
tree lined avenue today, hundreds of beech
trees will guide your visit.
4. The extensive gardens are laid over 47
acres and featured themed areas
including the Italian and Rose gardens,
the Herbaceous Border and Pets’
Cemetery, the Japanese Garden and
Tower Valley.
Enjoy the rambling walks, water
features, fine statuary, creative
ironwork and hundreds of varieties of
trees, plants and flowers. Relax and
listen to the birdsong, the trickle of the
fountains, the breeze rustling through
the ancient trees and take in the
panoramic view of these magnificent
gardens. Explore all the hidden
treasures the gardens have to offer.
5. Once a castle in the early 1300’s and
home to the Wingfield family for
several centuries, Powerscourt
House has a very different use today.
It was lovingly restored by the
Slazenger family until tragedy struck
on an evening in the Autumn of 1974
when a fire broke out and destroyed
the beautiful Palladian Mansion. It
lay in ruins for over 20 years but was
reopened in 1997 as a tourism
destination. Visitors can relive the
tragic story through the audio visual
history.
6. From its early roots as a small tea and coffee
station selling home baking in the corner of one
of its shops, Avoca has grown into one of
Ireland's most loved food brands. The Avoca
Terrace Café in Powerscourt offers an amazing
setting for you to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee
with friends and family next to what is surely
one of the most dramatic vistas in Ireland.
The food at the Terrace Café is homemade and
of excellent quality which is why people return
here time and again. Enjoy freshly-made
salads, soups and gourmet sandwiches as well
as a wide selection of meals including chicken
and brocolli crumble, luxury fish pie and
spinach, pine nut and brie quiche. For those
