ASK YOURSELF THIS BEFORE
INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY

1. How will you go beyond the textbook?
2. How will you select the “right” technology and media when so
many choices are available?
3. How will you create learning experiences that affectively use
these tools and resources to ensure that your students gain new
knowledge and skills?
FRAMEWORK FOR 21ST CENTURY
LEARNING
Foundational to 21st century
knowledge and skills is the
preparation of students to
meaningfully and purposefully use
technology and media for
creativity and
innovation, communication, resea
rch, and problem solving
1. The ability to digitally store and access large amounts of information such as
text, audio, visual, games, movies, in computer files or on CDs or DVDs
2. Its adaptability to meet varying needs of students. Teachers can differentiate
instruction and access to learning tools with a variety of technology tools
3. Students are no longer limited to the confines of the classroom

TECHNOLOGY

 Instructional technology involves the integration of teacher and student use
and knowledge of tools and techniques to improve student learning.
 The ASSURE model is a six step process that guides teachers through
creating lessons that achieve the goals of using technology effectively.
 Current technology offers several benefits for teachers
MEDIA

• Media are means of communication
• The general purpose of media is to facilitate
communication and learning
• There are six basic types of media used in learning:
text, audio, visual, video, manipulatives, and people

• Media format is the physical forms in which messages
are incorporated and displayed (Ex. White
Boards, PowerPoint Slides, CDs, DVDs, Computer
Multimedia)
• Instructional materials are the specific items used within
a lesson that influence student learning
• The design and use of instructional material are critical
because it is the interaction of students with those
materials that generates and reinforces actual learning.
• When teaching is teacher centered, the use of technology and
media are used to support the presentation of instruction.
• Digital tools expand and enhance teacher capabilities to fulfill
the numerous roles and responsibilities associated with being
an educator; these tools better enable the “digital teacher”
• The digital teachers instruction includes presentations that are
media rich and interactive
• Personal Response System (PRS) are handheld digital
devices used to collect and graphically display student
answers to teacher questions
• Mobile assessment tools is the advancement of mobile
computing that enables teachers to record student
assessment data
TEACHER USE OF TECHNOLOGY
AND MEDIA CON’T
• NETS for teachers is the National Educational
Technology Standards for Teachers
• Provides five basic guidelines for becoming
what we call a “Digital Teacher”
• NETS-T describes classroom practices, lesson
development, and professional expectations
• When instruction is student centered, the
primary user of technology and media are
the students themselves
• Digital students learn in classrooms where
technology is a seamless component of
learning that expands the educational
environment beyond the classroom walls

STUDENTS USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA
TODAY’S LITERACIES
There are 8 key areas of literacy that students need to improve leaning and
achieve successful careers
1. General Literacy- the ability of a student to comprehend or decode information and to
use, transform, and create new information
2. Text Literacy- skills to use text-based resources as a means to gather, interpret, and
communicate information
3. Computer Literacy- encompasses the knowledge and skills teachers need to select and use
technology to enhance learning opportunities for their students
4. Distance Learning Literacy- centered around designing and facilitating learning
experiences, modeling and promoting learning and responsibilities, and engaging in life long
learning
5. Cyberlearning Literacy- the use of a variety of technology tools to connect students with
people and resources beyond the boundaries of a normal classroom setting
6. Visual Literacy- the learned ability to interpret and create visual messages accurately
7. Audio Literacy- skills to understand the role of hearing and listening in learning
8. Video Literacy- to understand and evaluate video messages and to create video that
appropriately achieve the intended outcomes
Media literacy- students must be able to interpret and produce a wide variety of media
