• Asbestos was widely used as a heat-resistant building
material and an electrical insulator within commercial
buildings, homes and machinery from the 1950s until 1999,
when it was banned. This means that asbestos is still present
in millions of homes and buildings.
• Asbestos kills around 5,000 workers each year, which is
more than the number of people killed on the road. Each
week, around 20 tradespeople die as a result of past
exposure to asbestos.
• When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or
damaged, they release dangerous fibres into the air. When
inhaled these fibres can lead to serious diseases, such as
mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural thickening and asbestos-
related lung cancer.
• Working directly with asbestos-containing materials (ACMs)
can result in exposure to airborne asbestos that is much
higher than normal environmental levels.
• The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force
on 6 April 2012, updating previous asbestos regulations.
• Asbestos removal is one of the most highly legislated
services in the UK and an extremely specialised and skilled
occupation. Asbestos removal should be carried out only
by companies which are licensed and fully qualified to do
so. There are penalties if you fail to appoint an organisation
without the compulsory credentials.
