A container ship struck the San Francisco Bay Bridge, spilling 58,000 gallons of oil and closing beaches. Meanwhile, a Russian oil tanker broke in two during a storm, spilling 560,000 gallons of fuel oil into the Black Sea. This was one of the worst environmental disasters in the region in years. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the Bay Bridge spill to determine what caused the ship to strike the bridge.
