Every Monday someone in the company gives a 5-10 min talk on something that's on their mind. This week I took some time to reflect on 5 trends in technology that I think are very likely to shape the next ten years of our lives

1. Good news - the next ten years
• I have been reminiscing and looking forward
• Things change. Fact.
• I wanted to share my thoughts on 5 things that will shape our lives within
the next ten tears

2. Change happens fast
•
Moore’s Law – Transistor counts for integrated circuits plotted against
their dates of introduction. The curve shows Moore's law - the doubling of
transistor counts every two years. The y-axis is logarithmic, so the line
corresponds to exponential growth, allowing rapid advancement of
technology

3. Change happens fast
• Moore’s Law – computing power doubles every 18 months or so, allowing
more technology to be delivered
• There will be 10 billion people by 2064 up from 7.1 billion today

4. 1 – 3d printing
• The democratisation of 3D printing will allow more and more objects to
be printed/made away from a factory
• This will allow
•
the spread of uniquely designed objects that were not before possible
•
reduced global shipping costs
•
New attitudes to stocking e.g. hardware shops
• Other uses e.g. 3D scanners to backup your physical goods. I use dropbox
to backup my photo’s and memories, why not use a 3d scanner to backup
my antique jewellery to be replaced if stolen? Where is sentiment, in the
object or the form?

5. 2 – AR & heads up display
• The problem:

The solution, in the short term is google glass type devices, initially with limited functionality

doing some good things in this field

7. 3 – Driverless cars
• Google driverless car project has clocked up more than half a million km
of driving and has approx a dozen cars constantly on the road in 3 US
states where this is legal (Nevada, Florida and California)
• The technology is way ahead of the law and that needs to change before
this is commercialised.
• This will happen one day.
• Will my kids need to learn to drive?

8. 4 – Decromotisation of technology
• As more people have access to more technology the world will change
• Biggest example is access to the internet, allowing anyone with access, to
access similar levels of knowledge
• Cutting edge technologies only available to nations and individuals who
could afford them are more and more available to all.
• This is leading and will lead us to a world that operates on a more level
playing field where the ability to innovate new technologies will win over
the access to these techniogies,
• 3D and AR are great examples here, low barrier to use these technologies,
best use cases hold the value.

9. 5 – Technology & human relations
• The problem there is a danger we spend too much time interacting with it
and not enough with each other. More so now with the move to city
living and the degradation of ‘community’
• Einstein said: “I fear the day when technology overlaps our humanity. It
will be then that the world will have permanent ensuing generations of
idiots.”
• There will need to be a focus on helping interpersonal relationships
prosper.
• Go out of your way to make positive impressions on humans and your life
will be richer, technology cannot make this happen, it can only amplify.
You have to make this happen
• The most interesting people online are the most interesting people offline
