2. Personal Statement
As I stood at center court, watching as my teammate shot two double-bonus free throws; I turned to my other teammate
and smiled. “Are we going to win this game,” she asked. “Are we seriously going to win state?” I could only bear a cheesy
grin and reply, “I think we just might.” Thirty seconds later the buzzer rang; I was now a co-captain of the new high school
Girls’ Basketball State Championship team.
I had been working towards this moment since I was in fourth grade; going to basketball camps every summer, playing
on a traveling team that was somewhere new every weekend, and sacrificing time with friends and family so I could perfect
my skills in the gym. My work ethic was intense and precise because I had a goal in mind; I was not graduating high school
without a State Championship under my belt. I was passionate about the sport and about this want, this need to succeed;
this unnerving desire to be great.
The sacrifices made by my parents also helped me in achieving my goal. My parents foot the bill on many occasions to
sign me up for camps, transport me to and from tournaments, and staying with me in hotel after motel. I have three
siblings, and my parents nurtured their objectives just as they did mine, and in witnessing their will to allow us to succeed
and the support they gave each one of us helped me develop into a mature adult, and gave me the vital push to fight
through the battles of distress and defeat.
Even though I had much success in basketball, there were also moments of doubt and of downfalls. I battled through
injuries, such as a torn groan and a severally sprained ankle, but persevered in order to accomplish what I had been
working so hard for. I now apply that same determination to fight through the pitfalls of both school and my career path.
My transcript reflects who I am as a student, specifically showing my persistence for success through past pain and
doubt. As you will note, I do have a couple of “F” letter grades in some of my courses. Because of extenuating
circumstances in my summer semester, I needed to withdraw from these courses, but by the time I realized that I needed
to drop them it was too late to receive a “W,” so I took the “F.” Upon further review of my transcript, however, it shows that I
completed each one of these classes and received a sufficient and more appropriate grade. I worked hard to obtain these
grades in order to continue with my intended career path, even though there was a small bump in the road.
Eventually, after all of the trials and tribulations of the basketball season and after the championship game, the glitz
and glam of being a State Champion wore off, but the lessons learned will always remain. I am not willing to suggest that
winning this game and achieving this dream are my shining moments in life, because those objectives and potential
memories are yet to come. I am excited to see where life will take me, and, like in my senior year as a high school
basketball co-captain, what new dreams and goals I can apply my hard working and persistent attitude towards.
My intentions upon graduation are to enter graduate school to pursue my Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology.
Eventually I would like to enter into the exciting and ever-evolving field of Prison Counseling. There is a higher need in this
field, and I believe that everyone, criminal or other, deserves the help they need.

4. Reflection
I have only attended Argosy University for the past two semesters, but I have
thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I have a very good understanding of the field of
psychology, and although it is basic, will be able to apply this knowledge to better my
career, life, and hopefully the field itself.
I have excelled in the following categories of psychology: cognitive abilities,
communication skills, ethics and diversity awareness, interpersonal effectiveness,
knowledge of applied psychology, knowledge of foundations of the field, and research
skills. According to my SSAL self-report, I am now able to formulate reasoned opinions
on a wide range of psychological perspectives and theories within written and oral
presentations. I am also able to analyze and appraise the complexities of a given issue.
When discussing cognitive abilities, I feel that I am able to collect and arrange
information forma a variety of sources, as well as apply the information I discover. While
researching, I have the understanding to summarize research found in the articles I am
searching through. My communication skills have also improved. I can now present my
findings professionally, and accurately apply information towards daily life.
I feel that I have a good grasp on the ethics of this field as well. Psychology is faced
with ethical dilemmas constantly, so by understanding the codes I would be following, I
will be better equipped to enter the field. Finally, my knowledge of applied psychology
and foundations of the psychological field have greatly improved, and I will forever be
grateful of my educational experience.

7. My Future in Learning
The ability to learn is an intrinsic part of our lives, and is a skill that does not
simply fade away. We continue to learn throughout our lives, from what to do and
what not to do, where to go to satisfy our basic needs, what we are to eat, and what
kind of career or life we want.
Throughout my college career, I have often speculated about a few queries.
First, when is this going to be over? Second, what am I going to do with my
degree? Third, am I going to get a job in my intended field? And finally, what am I
going to be when I am finally all grown up? Now I am nearing the end of my
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I can gladly and honestly say that I have
answered, without a doubt, at least one of those questions. I am happy to report
that this degree will be over this week, shortly after these last few assignments are
completed.
Although one of my questions is indubitably answered, the rest of my inquiries
have been on my mind recently. I thought I would be stressed because of the
unknown; what I am going to do, who I am going to be, where I am going to end up,
but as I began to take a serious look into my past educational experience, I
determined that knowing the absolute answers would not be ideal. Life, and
knowledge gained, is all about the experiences we have. My experiences during my
pursuit of this degree have made me the person that I am, and my ability to continue
to learn during the next phase of my life, and throughout graduate school, will mold
into the person I was meant to be.
