2. Teaser trailer and target audience
The purpose of our teaser trailer was to raise
awareness of our film to a large amount of people
and to make an audience want to watch it. Our
target audience was mass and of a young age (16-
30). Many would still be in education such as college
and would be more likely to be able to relate to the
characters and plot in the film.
3. Concept of Audience
Our audience would be an active one rather than
passive, which would relate to the quote; ‘the
meaning is not in the text, but the meaning’ (Andrew
Hart, 1991).
Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding model follows
the idea that a producer encodes a media text with
an indented meaning and the audience decodes a
media text and interoperate it in different ways,
taking its meanings from it that may or may not be in
line with its intended meaning.
4. Intended meaning of our teaser trailer
The intended meaning of our teaser trailer was to get across
the genre of our film which was a psychological teen drama
from the specific shots that we decided to include in our teaser.
Also to give the audience a general idea of that narrative of
bullying that is a theme throughout our film. Our intended
meaning was to get the audience to want to go watch the film.
The negotiated reader of our film may be middle aged people
who may understand how the initial bullying may occur in this
situation but know that the reaction of the victim may be
exaggerated for audience enjoyment.
Some teenagers may also be the oppositional audience as
they may not agree with how some of the characters are
represented and do not agree that the plot is very realistic.
5. Limitations in exploring audience readings
There are limitations in exploring audience readings
however. A producer can only use theories that are
the most likely to be and even though they may
consider different responses, it is still only a
simplification of reality due to the fact that a
considerable range of individual responses from
members of an audience are not taken into
consideration.
6. Conclusion
Our teaser trailer is successful in appealing to a
particular audience which was shown in our
audience feedback where our audience discussed
what meaning they took from the trailer which had
match the inferred meaning that was indented.
They thought that the narrative theme of bullying
was strongly conveyed throughout the trailer without
giving too much away which meant that they were
still interested in watching the film.
