The North had a& the political power because their cities grew more rapid than

The South stars wanted to break away *om the North and fight for their own
independence this was ca&ed States Rights
Slavery was another topic America was split on for the simple fact that the
South had a mostly agricultural economy but people in the North ca&ed
abolitionists wanted to band slavery because they felt it was mora&y wrong as
we& as inhumane
10. EVENT(S)
There were major arguments over whether there should be slavery in the new states - Kansas
and Missouri - which started the war of “Bleeding Kansas”
Abolitionist John Brown dies as a martyr trying to help out rebel slaves by breaking into a
federal Armory. He was caught and hung.
Southerner see Lincoln’s acceptance into office a disadvantage towards them since he vowed a
slave *ee country.
Conf. States attack Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Major Robert Anderson surrenders fort to
conf. troops. Lincoln ca&ed for more troops and failed and caused more states to secede.
Victory at Getysburg and Vicksburg in 1863 marked turning point in the Union’s favor.
11. RESOLUTION
The American Civil War lasted four bloody years until
the North fina&y prevailed, the States were unified
again, and slavery was abolished.
12. AFTERMATH
The war ended at a cost of 620,000 lives
Abe Lincoln is assassinated
The South endured many failed attempts to
Reconstruction in hopes that it could impose a new society
on them.
