Theories or concepts: Self Concept
Self concept is come from the self-schema. It is a beliefs about the aspects of a
person’s identity. It organises the information process that related to ones’ self concept.
There are some theories like self-efficacy, self-awareness, self perception and others in
the self concept. This concept is biological and environmental.
Everyone have their own goal or target that they hope that it can come true in the
future. These concept is about that people’s beliefs are leading the people to have a
determination to achieve their targets. Besides, it also stimulates our abilities. In year
1977, Albert Bandura conducted that people who have high self-efficacy will see difficult
tasks as a challenges while the people with low self-efficacy will see the difficult tasks as
trouble and try to avoid it. I had a goal that my group’s design artworks can get better
results in presentation. My group members and I were put a lot of efforts on doing the
artwork. We had the belief that we can get a better score. It was difficult to get better score
from lectures, it was a big challenge for us. We had did our best so we believe we could
success even though many people failed to achieve the task that the lecturers want.
Furthermore, I had compared our group artworks with other groups. I aimed to
produce the high qualities artworks similar with the strong groups. Therefore, when I saw
that other groups produced some very good artworks, my self-awareness increased. Self-
awareness occurred when attention was brought about on the self. I felt our group still had
a long distance to have a similar level like them. Therefore, we tried to do many
researches on the artwork’s topic that our group got. Then, we found out the mistakes that
we made and changed them. The purpose was to increase the opportunity to get good
score.
Self perception theory was developed by a psychologist named Daryl Bem. He
mentioned that people will develop their attitudes by observe their own behaviour. It also
gauge our attitudes. Besides, it also means that people observe themselves in the same
way that they observe others and come out with a conclusion towards the people, things or
events that they observed. In the process of making the artworks, I used my own
requirements to observe other groups’ artworks. Then, I gave them so suggestions that
they can improve for their artworks. The other group also gave me some opinions based
on their requirements. These interactive actions between each others let us got some
ideas from others and learned from them.
In a nutshell, ‘self’ is a type of symbol-using that use to represent something like
people. Its subjective self will be the’I’ and the objective self as ’me’. Development of the
self is a cognitive process. In this process, it includes the learning of symbolic meanings.
Self-concept includes many theories like self-efficacy, self-awareness, self perception and
others.
