Introduction

Many years ago, when I was a graduate student, I joined the university’s Les-
bian and Gay Society. The society didn’t do much more than hold a weekly
meeting at which members chatted while drinking tea and coffee. Some of us
started to feel embarrassed to be hanging up posters around campus that adver-
tised “Free tea and coffee” at our next meeting. Especially when other societies
regularly organized debates, guest speakers, table quizzes and parties.
One day, one of our members, Paul, had a brilliant idea: “Let’s hang up
posters that claim we’re organizing exciting events. Nobody who isn’t queer
will have the guts to come to one of our meetings to verify whether we’re hold-
ing the events, so we’ll get away with it. We will look like the most exciting
group on campus and the other societies won’t be able to compete with us!”
Paul’s unconventional idea made sense in a twisted, perverted sort of way.
So of course we agreed to it. Each week a few of us spent one lunch break
trying to outdo each other in writing posters that made outrageous claims for
the next meeting. Our imaginations ran riot. It turned poster writing from a
chore into a fun game. And it gave us a chance to satirize some stereotypes of
sexuality.
This book collects some of those fun posters. Enjoy.
