We asked Gaylord Fokker to share his tragic story on how an accidental needle stick changed his life
The mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine is to improve the health of the community and the world by setting the standard of excellence in medical education, research and clinical care.
I’m here to introduce you to a revolutionary medical product that will save lives by providing the safest method of sharps disposal. The product is called The Zapper. The Zapper is unknown. Yes, I know. As was Facebook. As was the iPad. The Zapper, which has been FDA approved, will soon become just as well known in the medical community. It had already been tested and deployed at Harvard Medical School, UCLA Medical Center, and Emory Healthcare
What does it do? The Zapper will disintegrate needles, blades, scalpels, and other medical sharps. It even disinfects the waste so that it can go out with your hospital’s regular, every day trash.
The Zapper is very simple to use. It only requires one hand to dispose of your needle. Also, no longer will your doctors and nurses be trying to stuff the sharps into an overflowing container. Now they just need to place the needle or scalpel in the hole in the front of The Zapper.
The Zapper will reduce waste, increase employee safety and morale, reduce sick days and increase overall efficiency in disposal of medical sharps.
We asked nurses to list their top 3 health and safety concerns. American Nurses Association
When given the opportunity to list their top three health and safety concerns, over 70% of nurses selected ‘acute/chronic effects of stress and overwork,’ followed by 59.4% choosing ‘a disabling back injury,’ and 45.4% listing ‘getting HIV or Hepatitis from a needle-stick.’
Ninety-two percent of nurses - the highest percentage in the entire survey - revealed they would use devices that would prevent accidental needle sticks whenever possible.
Questions:
Have any of you had accidental needle stick injuries?
Have you met any of your employees who have had accidental needle sticks?
Has your hospital been cited for any OSHA/EHS/Legal safety issues?
