Builtin1896, McLaren Lodge was the home of the park department’sfirstsuperintendent,John
McLaren, until 1943. McLaren Lodge iscurrentlyboththe headquartersforthe RecreationandPark
Departmentandan interestingstopforarchitecture buffs,whooftenmarvel atthe intricate
constructionof the building’sMoorish-Gothicdesign,whichincludesexteriorwallsof 18-inchthick
ashlarbasaltmasonryand sandstone quoins.McLarenLodge isa registeredSanFranciscolandmark(No.
175).

It has beenthe traditionof one of the oldestchildren’splaygroundsinthe UnitedStatestohave a
carousel as part of its environment.Sincethe playgroundopenedin1888, there have beenthree at
GoldenGate Park. The current jewel thatliterallyglistensinthe parkisa 1914 beautybuiltbythe
Herschell-SpillmanCompany. Atfirst,the carousel waspoweredbysteam, butwhenPG&Eofferedto
loanan electricmotorto the park, officialsgladlyagreedtopaythe remainingexpenses.Leadingawell-
traveledlife,the carousel appearedasone of the mainsightsat the 1939 World’sFairon Treasure
Island,andalsoentertainedatamusementparksinLos AngelesandPortland. The illustrious,original
carousel showcased62 animal figures,decorativebenches,alluringpicture panels,andevenanorgan.
The Herschell-Spillmancreationenjoyedalong,continuousrununtil 1977 whena mechanismfailedto
work.Dubbedmechanicallydeficient,aswell aslackingitsinitial visualappeal,the original carousel was
sentto a restorationteamforrepair. Paintwasremovedandthe surfacesreceivedafacelift,asmissing
parts were carvedanew.The animalsreceivedaproperpaintjobwitha radiantpalette of colors.A
3. Germanband organ wasalso installedinthe carousel,whichfillsthe airwithanaudiokaleidoscope of
pleasure.The reopeningof the revampedcarousel tookplace in1984 and waswell receivedbythe
public. Today,manycome fromnear and far justto experience awhirl onthe historicGoldenGate Park
carousel.
