Umbrella Reviews: What are they and do we need them

Umbrella reviews are designed to summarize multiple Cochrane reviews on related topics into a brief friendly format for busy clinicians. The document discusses how clinicians have little time to read numerous reviews and spend on average only 2 minutes per clinical question. An umbrella review on treatments for childhood bedwetting summarized 7 Cochrane reviews covering various interventions into a 4 page review with 2 tables and 7 references, providing the essential information from over 400 pages of source reviews in a brief accessible format. Umbrella reviews are produced by the Cochrane Umbrella Reviews Working Group to synthesize evidence from existing Cochrane reviews into concise summaries for healthcare decision makers.
