10. Scientific Clouds: Hard Numbers vs. FUD
Fermi National Accelerator
Laboratory:
• Lead United States
particle physics
laboratory, Batavia IL
• ~60 PB of data on tape
• Early adopter of opensource Linux technology
• FermiCloud is our
private IaaS cloud for
science stakeholders
• Many cloud hosted IT
functions too:

11. The FUD
Performance Penalty
for Virtualization
Fight with hard
numbers—(next slide)
Too-high cost in time
and money
Open-source solution
1.5 FTE build/maintain
Security issues
Overhead for users and
admins
Allows for snapshots
Yes, but also gives
faster deployment time.

12. Hard virtualization numbers
Network: 10GBit ethernet at wire speed
Infiniband: Virtualized High Performance Computing,
96% of performance of bare metal using 2 fewer cores
Disk: Multi-terabyte relational databases at bare-metal
level performance
CPU: Some benchmarks actually better in virtualization
Launch time: a few seconds
Reboot time: seconds instead of minutes
Procurement cycle: Seconds instead of months
There are no virtualized performance hits:
Just badly-written apps or misconfigured OS.

14. Future Focus:
On-demand Services
Commercial Cloud Challenges:
Data movement costs to and from cloud
Cost model—determine optimum time to burst
to commercial cloud and then direct workflows
there dynamically
Accessing auxiliary services—implications of
being outside your data facility
Increasing scale to 1000’s of simultaneous
virtual machines.
On-demand batch submission and data
movement services to support all of the above and
more.

and are fighting
Cloud FUD

24. Cloud Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt
I heard the cloud is…
1. Not very secure
2. Not reliable. It goes down a lot.
3. Not very available b/c it relies on an
Internet connection
4. Has a steep learning curve
26. Fighting the FUD:
Stick to the facts and personalize it.
1. Provide recent statistics / trends.
2. Focus on the positives and acknowledge the
changes.
3. Share stories & use cases.
27. Fighting the FUD:
Open communication and often
1. You can’t over communicate.
2. FUD festers when users are left in the dark.
3. Offer two-way communication.
28. Fighting the FUD:
Training & education opportunities
1. Provide training before AND after moving to
the cloud.
2. Send out tips regularly.
3. Survey and train appropriately.
