AMERICA’S COMMUNITY
COLLEGES:
American Association of Community Colleges
Building a Nation of Learners
by Advancing America’s
Community Colleges
In the News
President Barack Obama
White House Summit on Community Colleges
October 5, 2010
“Now is the time to build a firmer, stronger foundation for
growth that will not only withstand future economic
storms, but one that helps us thrive and compete in a
global economy. It’s time to reform our community
colleges so that they provide Americans of all ages a
chance to learn the skills and knowledge necessary to
compete for the jobs of the future.”
In the News
“…Community colleges and vocational schools train and
retrain workers, often in close collaboration with private
employers, and in many cases they perform this function at a
relatively low cost. Although helping workers acquire up-to-
date skills is always important, it is especially critical now,
when long spells of unemployment are threatening the
longer-term employability and productivity of many.”
Ben S. Bernanke
Chairman of the Federal Reserve System
Wall Street Journal
March 3, 2011
In the News
“By 2018, we will need 22 million new college degrees—
but will fall short of that number by at least 3 million
postsecondary degrees, Associate’s or better. In addition,
we will need at least 4.7 million new workers with
postsecondary certificates.”
Carnevale, Smith, and Strohl
(2010)
