CII at Cannes
For the last three years, CII has been promoting shooting locales of
India and Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, Maharashtra Tourism
Development Corporation, Delhi Tourism, Odisha Tourism have
been part of the India promotional activity of CII. If we compare
Indian films being shot outside the country vis-a vis Foreign Films
shot in India, the ratio of the latter is much less although the pen-
chant towards shooting in India is growing and the Indian govern-
ment has opened the doors with structured policy framework. This
is the right time to flaunt India as an ideal shooting destination and
the Indian states showcased this by promoting their destinations,
their facilities and preparedness to host foreign producers want-
ing to shoot in the country. The Service Export Promotion Council
set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was also present
at Cannes at CII booth this year. The participation of SEPC was
mainly to develop synergies between the tourism and film indus-
tries and to provide a platform for facilitating partnership between
the Indian and global film industry.

trade fair
The Indian M & E Delegates representing Indian Media giants like Viacom 18
Media Pvt Ltd, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, Eros International and sev-
eral Studio Services providers took the opportunity to interact with the Chinese
counterparts at the recently concluded China Services Trade Fair
S
ervices from India was one of the major attractions at the
just concluded third China International Fair for Trade in
Services (CIFTIS) in Beijing. The India Pavilion that show-
cased in its façade the architectural elegance personified beauty of
the Taj Mahal, and charmed the CIFTIS visitors, was inaugurated
by Mr Ashok Kantha the Indian Ambassador, China, Mr Sudhanshu
Vats, Mission Leader & Group CEO, Viacom 18 Media Pvt Ltd, Mr
Sudhanshu Pandey, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of
Commerce & Industry, noted Actor Ms Divya Dutta, prominent govern-
ment personalities and a heterogeneous audience.
In the backdrop of the objective of the fair, the Indian M & E Del-
egates representing Indian Media Giants like Viacom 18 Media Pvt
Ltd, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, Eros International and
several Studio Services providers took the opportunity to interact
with the Chinese counterparts in an attempt to explore the business
possibilities ultimately strengthening the India – China Industry
partnership.
With the current scenario restricting India’s penetration into China
in the sector of particularly Entertainment and Media, the Indian
participants took up in their deliberation an overview of the situa-
tion and attempted to look at productive and fruit-bearing strate-
gies to deal with certain restrictions restraining the realization
of Indian Cinema in China in terms of its potential and ability to
connect with the local audience.
Taking an understanding of few major barriers to smooth import
of Indian Films to China and opportunity for several other M & E
segments few suggestions were put forth strategizing the mobiliza-
tion of objective in the right direction, in a closed door meeting
with Indian Ambassador Mr Ashok Kantha, .Mr Sudhanshu Pan-
dey, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India
and the Indian Media and Entertainment barons.
In an important meeting with senior members from State Admin-
istration of Radio, Film & Television (SARFT), the Indian M & E
delegates were informed by them that soon the respective country
governments will sign a co-production agreement where the direc-
tors on both sides would have access to locations for shooting in
each other’s country and to tap local talent as well.
In addition to meeting with SARFT another important interaction
of the delegates with senior members from China Film Co-Produc-
tion Corporation, a part of China Film Group, was held exploring
the possibilities of import of Indian movies for theatrical release
in Mainland China. The members assured their interest in doing
so and expressied that they would be keen to send a delegation
from the China Film Group to India to further strengthen this pos-
sibility by personally visiting the studios, production houses and
meeting important film makers. Through discussions with several
groups like ENT, NPRG, CCTV, and powerful bodies like SARFT, the
Indian team representing M & E sector has taken a strong initiative
towards turning around the status de-facto that allows marginal in-
ternational releases in China every year with pre-dominantly Holly-
wood filling in the slots and almost negligent presence of Bollywood
movies in china The delegation took the opportunity of visiting and
interacting with the senior team at Iqiyi, the largest video website
in China to get familiarized with China Online Movie Market.
Besides exploring the huge market for Indian Cinema in China,
Discussions were also related to the landing rights for Indian En-
tertainment channels as well as appealing for liberal rules enabling
the reach out of local audience to these channels. The Inaugural
day lent to the delegates a series of powerful engaging activities
like delegate specific business meetings, Studio Visits, Meetings
with the government bodies controlling Media and Entertainment
in China, like SARFT. The evening became extremely lively, relax-
ing and socially interactive with local Chinese audience and the
delegates savoring the screening of hindi film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
and an interactive session with Ms Divya Dutta.
