Gender Relations and Conflict: The three main issues about gender and conflict

Women are less involved in war than men. On the contrary, they experience much pain

during these conflicts. There are various issues, which concern gender conflicts. The first issue is

inadequate security on women in cases where the rule of law has fallen. Two, there is normally

women abuse by the armed groups. Lastly, there are also cases of women being abused by

personnel security of the state.

These issues are very important because women together with children constitute many

refugees who run away from conflicts. Inadequate established community structure protection

and formal systems of justice make women very susceptible to abuse and exploitation when

fleeing areas of conflict. During transit, women are susceptible to border, armed groups and

smuggler attacks. Within the refugee camps, community and family conflicts exist. In some

cases, aid workers end up abusing women. Additionally, women encounter devastating sexual

violence forms. These forms of violence are in some cases carried out to attain various political

goals. They are the first to be influenced by the breakdown of infrastructure. This is because of

their attempt to maintain families together and take care of the injured. They may also, be

compelled to start sexual exploitation to survive and help their families (Cook, 2006).

The other three issues are the poor representation of women during formal processes of

peace, inequitable and discriminatory legislations and some outdated customary practices such as

wife inheritance and traditions. Poor representation of women during conflict resolutions has led

to failure to address the major concerns of women like post-conflict accountability, gender based

and sexual violence and the rights of women (Elshtain, 1987).

These issues are interconnected because their effects are normally felt even after the end

of conflicts. These include cases of unwanted pregnancies, stigmatization and sexually

transmitted infections.

While there have been a lot of issues affecting the American Society, racial discrimination has caused more harm and caused chaos in the recent years in the wake of the recent police shooting of the black people in the community. According to Christine Hauser of New York Times (Hauser, 2016), “It spurred no organized street protests; no viral hashtags; no movement like Black Lives Matter, which was sparked by anger and despair over a wave of killings of African-Americans by law enforcement officials”. In the past discrimination was more widespread in most if not all states of America but in the recent years, though existent, it has come with less outcry and in a more hidden way. Racial discrimination has been quite evident in sectors like housing and employment among others. Others include the healthcare, housing, credit markets and consumer interactions. Discrimination is commonly defined as the unfair treatment to or against a person, based on their social class, wealth, popularity, racial origins, and ethnicity among many other religion (Blank, 2004). INTRODUCTION Racial discrimination according to the review done by Mary Blank and her associates can be measured through many ways. One of them may be laboratory tests and the other may be field-based experiments. Other methods may be a statistical inference, surveys, and records of experiences. These measures are used to measure discrimination that occurs at specific time frames. If a closer look is taken on the forms of discrimination that happen over time, a whole lot of issues can be sorted out. For example, generational discrimination may not adversely affect the current generation than it can affect the next. Through mistakes committed in the past like gender discrimination, racial discrimination in health, education, wealth and societal classes, opportunities for the future generation are limited. If poor health becomes an issue, then the future kids will struggle with limited resources (Blank, 2004). LITERATURE REVIEW The other reasons tend to cut across various institution based on various factors. Discrimination in places like elementary schools and grade school may affect a child’s academic performance in the college. This is due to the fact that discrimination affects the sub-conscience of a human being. This also happens in employment places and this means that certain opportunities are stifled and due to it. Another reason may be discrimination across independent organizations but yet in the long run connected by special factors. Measuring discrimination can be quite had as the timing is difficult to trace as well as the extent. Therefore accuracy can’t be.

Adamian University of San Francisco “Did affirmative action and the diversity rationale move us backwards?” This question is often posed to invoke a discussion about lessons from affirmative action and social science support for the diversity rationale. Yet, the question itself is polarizing by virtue of offering only two divergent paths. On the “yes” side are grassroots organizations, and critical race, legal, and educational scholars who critique the efficacy of working inside historically racist legal parameters; on the “no” side, those engaged in diversity rationale scholarship focused on the societal and educational benefits of a racially diverse student body and others aligned with political lawyers and institutional practitioners supporting affirmative action. As a consequence, while neoconservatives work hand-in-hand to advance legal arguments grounded in problematic notions of meritocracy and colorblindness, advocates for racial justice are divided. ABSTRACT: Gender issue dominates the 21st century discourse both in the developed world and in the developing countries. Running Head: DEFINING THE RELATION BETWEEN RACISM AND POVERTY (EMPLOYMENT AND HOUSING IN USA 1 Defining the Relation between Racism and Poverty (Employment and Housing) in USA 2 Racism affects poverty in America as the most minority have a difficulty securing well-paying jobs and decent housing thus living in poor neighborhoods and working in low paying jobs. Inequality in housing is evident when one takes a look at black communities living in segregated neighborhoods. For example, in the Baltimore community, Federal housing subsidy policies imply that African American families of low income can only reside in designated blocks that are away from middle-class suburbs (Strauss, 2015).On the other hand, inequality in employment has been a topic of discussion for a long time. Tomaskovic-Devey (1993) argues that most employers tend to conform to the white privilege in hiring and career advancement initiatives. Therefore people of color are ranked the lowest in the pecking order for prestigious positions. The following paper investigates how racism has affected employment and decent housing in the U.S. It uses theoretical explanations and critical analysis to describe how the differences in housing and employment amount to racial prejudice it also evaluates other societal factors that contribute to inequality in employment and housing. While it’s true that racism contributes to residential segregation and inequality of opportunity, I believe that other forms of discrimination such as gender bias and class divide play a part in shaping the opportunities of U.S citizens Racial prejudice implies that people of color are disadvantaged when it comes to housing and employment. Whites are preferred for superior job positions where people of color would also meet stipulated qualifications. On the other hand, social classes account for the differences in resource, wealth, and power in our society. In the United States, we have Poor, the working class, middle class, upper middle class and the upper-class social rankings (Wolff & Zacharias, 2007). A child born of a low-income family would have limited access to decent housing when compared to those in middle-class families. Lastly, gender relates to the aspect of being male, female or otherwise non-conforming to gender. Gender stereotypes that associate women to traditional duties cause discrimination in employment. Historical Background While all women in the United States face similar workplace challenges, other women groups have to face the issue of diversity and inequalities. This is particularly true of black Caribbean women, who are increasingly joining the American workforce (Hall, Everett & Hamilton-Mason, 2012). Like other black women, Caribbean women confront numerous workplace challenges. They range from sexist and racism, to low possibility of getting promotion or career progression. Other challenges include having to defend one’s race and shifting or code switching to overpower barriers to employment. Consequently, they have to cope with unending racial inequalities in the workplace as they try to make ends meet for their families. Black Caribbean women have always formed an important part of the American workforce. Although not much has been authored about the challenges that they encounter within the mainstream American economy, their contribution to the socioeconomic development of the United States can be traced back to periods before the United States gained independence. Berleant-Schiller (1999) provides some of the earliest insights into the genesis of workplace challenges that black Caribbean women face. According to Berleant-Schiller (1999), Caribbean women played a role in the 16th century commodity plantation system. During this period, Black Caribbean women used to work as slaves in the tobacco and sugar plantations of Americans. The slave labor control prefigures industrial control of a rising proletariat in Europe. Thus, Berleant-Schiller (1999) reinforces the idea that the problems that modern problems that black Caribbean women face in the workplace have their historical roots in slavery. Considering the above, Caribbean black women have a long-standing immigration history that can traced back to five centuries ago. However, they still lag compared to their African American counterparts in workplace-related inequalities (Wells-Wilbon & Vakalahi, 2015). Caribbean women have a high level of immigration into the country. Approximately 73 percent of Caribbean population is participants in the American labor force. However, they still face the problem of low wages and long working hours. Furthermore, most Caribbean black women in the workforce perform are founding informal job sectors, with an insignificant fraction participating doing white-collar jobs (Wells-Wilbon & Vakalahi, 2015). Unlike other women groups from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, black Caribbean women are less likely to be employed in departments that require technical skills and qualifications, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 2. The application of targeted and technically neutral systems has resulted in a managerialist approach to community development which has privileged masculinist practices and marginalized the intersubjective, consciousness-raising practices which are central to feminism. FAMILY CHANGES SINCE 1960 I tend to agree with experts in their debate of the weakening of ties between families as the factor resulting in to a ‘rotten’ society. In the 1960’s, families were ran by both the man and the wife. Fathers took the responsibility of working while women took care of the young and family chores. (Pew Research Center 2010). Changes occurred when mothers started to work to support their families. Inner family residents dealt with single parenthood resulting from jailing of the father or death or from unwilling to support the family. This lead children to take care of themselves as mothers were busy looking for work as the economy had drastically changed. Divorces rocked most families that brought rifts between children and parents. Children needed their parental love but the parents tried to occupy their children. The children grew up with many problems. Mothers could keep up to 3 hubbies. Increase in income and the changing personalities among members of the family led to more and more changes. People had forsaken the old way of doing things (man at work, women at home taking care of the family) (Davis, 1991). I am on the side of experts. Some of the things I would propose for stronger ties between families are love, loyalty, commitment, communication, laughter, leadership, spiritual wellness and time together. Other things to make the family stronger are working hard to make the best income for your family to be contented with what they have. Learning life in marriage, parenting, life and family are also a key factor to a happy family. Each member should keep the family priorities and values ringing in their minds. Most individual don’t realize the importance of a family thus see no need to better it leading to he break up of it.( James, 2008). A successful family is made of good communication, appreciation, spending more time with ones family and reinforcing the commitments. Spiritual wellness has the good in that it enables individuals in a family cope up with crises; appreciate one another, seeing the importance of one spending time with his/her family and the commitments to each other. 2. Running Head: GENDER RELATIONS AND CONFLICT 2 Gender Relations and Conflict: The three main issues about gender and conflict Women are less involved in war than men. On the contrary, they experience much pain during these conflicts. There are various issues, which concern gender conflicts. The first issue is inadequate security on women in cases where the rule of law has fallen. Two, there is normally women abuse by the armed groups. Lastly, there are also cases of women being abused by personnel security of the state. These issues are very important because women together with children constitute many refugees who run away from conflicts. Inadequate established community structure protection and formal systems of justice make women very susceptible to abuse and exploitation when fleeing areas of conflict. During transit, women are susceptible to border, armed groups and smuggler attacks. Within the refugee camps, community and family conflicts exist. In some cases, aid workers end up abusing women. Additionally, women encounter devastating sexual violence forms. These forms of violence are in some cases carried out to attain various political goals. They are the first to be influenced by the breakdown of infrastructure. This is because of their attempt to maintain families together and take care of the injured. They may also, be compelled to start sexual exploitation to survive and help their families (Cook, 2006). The other three issues are the poor representation of women during formal processes of peace, inequitable and discriminatory legislations and some outdated customary practices such as wife inheritance and traditions.
