4. Social Promotion is the act of promoting students from one grade to the next even though they have not demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the grade level standards.
6. Retention is the practice of requiring a student who has been in a given grade level for a full school year to remain in that level for a subsequent school year.
16. 1.Intensify Learning A study that was taken by the Consortium on Chicago School Research found that when students are given more challenging or higher thinking questions/assignments,, the students outperform less-challenged students on standardized tests. Intensifying learning also helps the school. This is true because if you have high-achieving students, that produces a high-achieving school.
17. 2. Assess to Inform Teachers Identify student problems as early as possible in the school year instead of waiting until an entire year is lost. Assessments that provide detailed information about students' academic progress, including what they know, what they can do, how they learn, and where they are having problems, can ensure that children's instructional needs are met.

Expand Learning Options With the diverse population of students in schools today, educators must strive to create a system that reflects and celebrates diversity and allows children to reach high standards. Educators can create new paths to learning standards by providing more learning options for students. Providing struggling students with the right kinds and amounts of extra help during the school year is more complicated and demanding than promoting or retaining these students, but it is the only way to avoid dooming millions of children to continued failure.
19. 4. Intervene Early and Often Intervening as soon as problems are identified will provide struggling students with the extra time and help they need. Ongoing and diagnostic assessments help schools develop strategies that stop the cycle of failure and that accelerate learning. If students are to be held more accountable for their academic performance and held to high educational standards, schools must provide adequate opportunities for students to those meet expectations on time.
20. 5. Provide Professional Development to Ensure Skilled Teachers According to more than 200 studies, it is made clear that teacher education is critical for student learning. Professional development has also proved more effective when teachers and their fellow colleagues work together on integrating standards.

23. Social Promotion has to do with you as a teacher because the teacher is the one who is providing information to the student’s regardless if at the end of the year they are able to pass testing. Retention has to do with you as a teacher because the teacher is the one responsible for providing the information that a student has to know in order to move to a higher level of education. Teachers should be well trained and skilled by providing a challenge for the students. This will allow the students to think at a higher level.
