2. What is a copyright? The legal right granted to an author, a composer, a playwright, a publisher, or a distributor to exclusive publication, production, sale, or distribution of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work.
3. How does this affect teachers? Fair use Reading material Making copies Brevity & Spontaneity
4. Is it fair? Use these 4 criteria to decide- What is the purpose and character of the use? What is the nature of the work? What is the proportion or extent of the material used? What is the effect on marketability of the product used?
5. Reading Material Teachers have to be careful when using certain reading material; whether it be from a book or magazine. If it’s not from the text book there are very specific laws that prohibit the words and copies allowed.
6. Copies No more than... one work is copied from a single author. three authors are copied from a single collective work (such as an anthology). nine instances of multiple copying occur during a single term or semester
7. Brevity & Spontaneity How long are you planning to use the copy righted material? How many times can you copy these materials?
8. How do you know? When in doubt, look it up! Use your guidelines Ask for permission Use your head- if it’s questionable, then it’s not worth it!
