Notes de l'éditeur
Janet Cloud Services have been increasing our offering to the Janet community, through our contacts with MS Office 365, Google, MS Azure and Amazon Warehousing Services. A number of institutions and researchers approached Janet with a myriad of requirements for Research data and long term archiving. It seemed sensible for Janet to design a framework for the whole community, and so the Classic OJEU procurement took place resulting in the Single Supplier Framework we now have in place with Arkivum.
There had been two responses to the the tender and the Arkivum offering was the closest to the spec outlined. It had one crucial aspect which it uniquely offered – a bit for bit guarantee over the long term.
The framework can be used by HE/FE and Research. It is accessed via the Janet website, where there is a straightforward pro forma contract, which follows a classic Janet structure, although there is some scope for customising.
As many of you will know, Janet goes back 30 years or so. During the last decade, we have seen a significant change in traffic patterns. 10 years ago 80% of the traffic on the Janet network was exchanged inside the community and 20% went out to the wider Internet.
In the last few years, and particularly more recently, that pattern has been reversed and we are seeing an accelerating trend to more of a range of broad based services, and it is cloud that has started to drive that shift in traffic patterns.
Janet provides the network as well as a host of services that customers require.
Within Janet’s converged infrastructure we’re providing a host of cloud services that have been requested by the community - –
Education agreements with Microsoft, Amazon and Google;
Framework agreements for Data archiving with Arkivum; File Sync and Share;
Over the last couple of years, Janet has been working on strategic plans to develop the hybrid cloud and has spoken with various institutions and researchers to see what products they would want to use. In the course of the discussions, it emerged that they required a product like that offered by Arkivum.
Rather than each organisation having to run its own procurement, it seemed sensible that Janet would run an OJEU framework procurement, taking into consideration the needs of the community. After going to tender, we ended up with a single supplier framework in place. We believe that this offers a simple, flexible route to a unique archiving product.
