One of the world's most rapidly growing economies. Growth last year was 9.2%
Projected growth over next 40 years: approx. 6.0%
India already accounts for the second highest number of inward investment projects in
London after the US
Approx. 10,000 Indian-owned businesses in London employing 49,000 people
India’s overseas investment in Europe has multiplied ten times in the past 8 years
In 2006 there were 230,000 visitors to London from India, up from 166,000 in 2005.
Indian students account for the 4th
highest proportion of international students studying
in London. In 2005/06 there were 4,320 Indians studying in the capital.

Trade example: India
• UK trade with India has grown rapidly
over 1993-2003 with imports
increasing more than 107% and
exports increasing by 95%
• In 2003, the UK received imports
totally £2.8bn from India. This
consisted of £2bn of goods such as
engineering goods, gems and
jewellery; and £0.8bn of services
• The UK send exports worth £3bn to
India. This consisted of £2.3bn of
goods such as metals and
chemicals, and £0.7bn of services

Inward Investment
• London has a strong offer: globally competitive clusters and sectors, highly
skilled and open labour pool, Heathrow airport and connectivity, cultural and
creative offer
• Gateway to UK and EU markets
• Emerging Markets account for about 19% of the stock of FDI in the UK, much of
this is likely to have been in London
• Since 2000, London is home to 28% of the FDI projects in the UK from China,
40% from Hong Kong, 61% from India and 90% from Russia
• 1997-2004 119 Indian FDI projects into Europe, London receiving 55, half of
these were in software
• UK companies also investing in India, in 2003 UK companies invested £210m
FDI in India

Vision
• To ensure the transparency and availability of London 2012 opportunities maximising the number and
diversity of businesses contributing to the London 2012 programme, and create a legacy of increased
capacity and expertise.
Objectives
• Build a business network and brokerage service that develops and grows throughout the delivery of
the 2012 programme and into the legacy
• Facilitate the development of UK businesses by promoting links into the business support network
• Provide opportunities for buyers to access a wide and diverse network of businesses
• Allow a wide range of diverse businesses to benefit from London 2012 investment
Why CompeteFor
• The London 2012 Games and legacy provide a tremendous opportunity for the business community in
the UK. Over 75,000 contracts will be procured through the London 2012 supply chain and related
work.

• Compete For is a full service offering incorporating:

– A business readiness test utilising existing business support infrastructure

– Buyer engagement team to ensure we have the right opportunities available

posting opportunities worthwhile

The Emerging Market Unit – Our Objectives
Our objectives are:

As the chief representative of the LDA and the Mayor of London’s Office in India, today I would very briefly like to tell you about LDA, it’s emerging market focus and how we – the London India Office connect with LDA’s global perspective and work towards developing a mutually beneficial relationship.
