C’est Nicolas Lambert qui a choisi ce titre révélateur de tout ce qui émane de ces travaux topographiques sans précédent dans l’histoire de la cartographie, exclusifs évidemment dans l’histoire de la Palestine, de ce Moyen-Orient inventé par des intentions coloniales. Il ne faut pas cesser de le redire face au goût du gâchis qui voudrait tout ensevelir en dépit des enjeux vitaux et du pire qui agresse sans relâche.

" D’habitude, nous ne vous encombrons pas avec nos processus cartographiques fastidieux qui restent cachés sous l'eau. Mais .. Battir, c’est très différent. Il n’y a rien comme d’habitude. Là, c’est tout à la fois : chaque geste pour chaque donnée, chaque mesure, chaque tracé comme son interprétation, toute la masse inventée et créée sur place, à l’Écomusée de Battir, de 2007 à 2011, toute cette masse de données et d’informations sous la ligne de flottaison appartient à CE village, c’est-à-dire aux villageois. Et çà change tout.

Abstract. Along with the presentation of Mapping Orienteering Activities in Battir, the project here is to offer an access to cartographic practises through a serie of topographic data representing the landscape, in this case the focus is on « The Gardens of Paradise » - Battir, Unesco World Heritage Site. From Institutional cartography to Sensitive cartographies, to see how mapping becomes a tool to open up dialogues between inhabitants of all ages.
How could such dialogues put into play participative democracy, offering visual exchanges about what is « living together »?
These data will be available also in tactile quadrichromy printing, offering a new opportunity to interact also with blind and partially-sighted people.

When you look at the countryside, when you look at the fields, and the terraces that are so strongly characterizing these landscape, it is 'a terrace landscape' because every single slope has been manufactured and shapped by human work.
Well. When you look at these terraces, and the people, the Felayin, the Paysans, cultivated his land, you feel the impression to be in a sort of 'a Palestine of the past'.. simple but very genuine and original. »
