Smoking Cessation Workshop Part One
By Dominika Cudzich
Features Editor
An orientation to smoking cessation
took place Sept. 10, in U209, for stu-
dents and faculty members interested
in quitting smoking.
Directed by Lisa Wright, wellness
coordinator, here at Moraine, and Deb-
bie Guerrero, the respiratory therapist,
the first out of four smoking cessation
workshop wrapped up the meeting
with getting to know one another, and
share different stories about the habit.
The two set an exact date, Sept 24,
on which the participants are set to
quit smoking all together.
"We hope you are committed with :
us the next three weeks," encouraged
Wright, as she offered delicious veggie
and chicken wraps to enjoy while the
meeting took it's place.
Sponsored by the Respiratory Health
Association, the participants were pro-
vided with a booklet that corresponds
with the Stop Smoking Program, to
help and ease the process of trying to
quit smoking.
Also, a Tobacco Addiction. quiz was
handed out, to test oneself, and under-
stand why he or she smokes.
After completion, quitters have an
easier approach to their own way in
which they can successful reach their
goal.
"Back in the day, parents were
smoked around kids, in cars, with their
,.. ...,..---..,.__ ---, windows rolled down,"
I I
said Guerrero.
Which lead to the
discussion of the new
law, in which driv-
ers 'are not allowed to
smoke and drive with
anyone younger than
18.
Wright provided in-
formation about the
Arkansas Clean Indoor
Air Act, which went
into effect August
1, 2010, prohibiting
drivers to smoke while
driving with children
who ride in car seats
present.
As participants
shared their own sto-
ries, Guerrero intro-
duced them of' certain
over the counter help-
ful products.
These aids include,
I I nasal sprays, inhalers,
Nicorette gum, or
Quit Smoking Today.'
patches, drops, Zyban, and Chantix.
"Zyban left me with side effects I
did not like," specified a participant
of the group.
Both Wright and Guerrero ex-
plained that each quitter responds to
the medications in their own way. For
instance, heavy chain smoking quit-
ters should consider purchasing the
level two Nicorette products, which
contain more of the nicotine they are
lacking as they quit smoking.
Though mistakenly assumed, some
cigarette-smoking individuals believe
e-cigarettes can help transition from
cigarettes, to e-cigs, to not smoking
at all.
."Derbin is pushing banning e-cigs
all together, because no one knows
what is in there; it is not regulated,"
added Wright.
The remaining of the workshop
meetings will take Sept. 17, 24, and
Oct. 1.
