2. COMENIUS PROJECT
“The 4 elements” – Water
WATER TO DRINK
MINERAL OR TAP WATER ?
THIS IS THE DILEMMA
3. ABSTRACT
Is it really necessary to drink bottled water?
Isn’t it cheaper and environmentally eco-
friendly the choice to drink home tap water?
Is the water of our towns good for our health?
COMENIUS PROJECT
“The 4 elements” – Water
4. ABSTRACT
Students must analyze the two kinds of water,
considering its qualitative and organoleptic
aspects, the costs for the environment and for our
wallets.

5. SUMMARY TABLE
Maths Content
Calculations and percentages, reading
tables, construction of tables and
graphs, comparisons of data,
equivalenceof measures of capacity.
COMENIUS PROJECT
“The 4 elements” – Water
Science Content
Water cycle, sources and surface
water, minerals in water,
solutions, distilled water,
hardness of water, disinfection,
air pollution, wasteproblem.
6. SUMMARY TABLE
AGE OF STUDENTS : 12-14 years
TOTAL NUMBER OF LESSONS : 7
KEY COMPETENCES
Maths competence and base competences in science and
technology, digital competences, learning to learn, social and
civiccompetences,senseofinitiativeandentrepreneurship.

7. TEACHING UNIT OVERVIEW
THE SITUATION
Drinking mineral water
is increasing. This leads
to the bottling of spring
water in places distant
several kilometers from
the place where water is
sold.
COMENIUS PROJECT
“The 4 elements” – Water
8. In addition to this bottles are
made of plastic.
The transport on wheels
produces greenhouse gases and
many tons of plastic end up in
landfills.
On the contrary tap water to be
drinking needs to be disinfected
through chlorination. But it is
cheaper, ecological and it can be
delivered at home.

9. GUIDING QUESTIONS
Can water eventually ends?
The transport of mineral helps maintain water quality
at the source?
What minerals contain water?
What is the environmental cost of road transport
bottled water?
What is the average cost for families?
Is the chlorine present in drinking tap water bad for
our health?
How hard is tap water?
Which water to drink?

mineral water and tap water.
Suggestions and assumptions to overcome
some inconveniences.
Reflections on the characteristics of the
choices: local anduse variables.

11. STEP ACTIVITY
1 EXPLORATION
Welcome. Presentation of the problem. Brainstorming. Survey of the prejudices connected to the
problem. Building of the main question to which students must give an answer. Map of
expectations. Training contract.
2 PLANNING SURVEY
Discussion about how to go on with the research. Definitions of guide questions. What should I
do? What it is useful to know, creation of cooperative groups of pupils and distribution of tasks
and roles.
3-4-5 IMPLEMENTATION OF SURVEY
Working groups. Targeted research of materials, data, information.
6 EXPERIMENT
Laboratory experiment on the characteristics of water
7 SHARING DISCOVERIES
Written record of single results. Explanation of results.
8 SUMMARY WORK
Conclusion.
Preparation of the final product.

13. EVALUATION
EVALUATION ON ONGOING TRAINING
to improve learning and to record the progress
through listening, observation, evaluation of the
lesson: motivation, interest, task, participation, care
work, interaction, autonomy, ability to select the
information needed for the realization.
COMENIUS PROJECT
“The 4 elements” – Water
14. EVALUATION
FINAL SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
of knowledge, achieved skills and of cross
objectives like the ability to cooperate, to
fit into new situations, the ability to
organize their own work, the ability to
self-assess/evaluate, the ability to make
projects, the ability to search.
