1. Genre
The genre of a song is important as it defines the iconography and the target audience. This is a rock song; this is shown through the performances of the stars of this video, as well as the costumes and camera techniques used. This video uses a lot of hand held camera movements to represent the disorientation of the performers.
Audience
As this a rock song I would think that it would be better suited to a male audience as that gender tends to favour this genre as opposed to pop music. However females are also able to enjoy this video as it has very little offensive material and features a cast of young males. Due to the content of the song and some adult themes this song would be unsuitable for children, an age range of around 16-35.
Narrative
The narrative of this video is to in a non-linear style and cuts to different points not in chronological order. It begins in a dusty desert environment. With a car accident with a group of young men in and around the car this is actually the last event but is shown first, this is used to disorient the audience as does the presentation style. We are then shown one of the men from the accident walking down a road alone at this point it unclear if he has just got up and walked away from the scene of the crash, he no longer has any of his cuts and bruises and his glasses which lay next to his are now on his head. He is singing but remains a character in the narrative; he passes several people and animals which reflect the lyrics of the song. We also see band mates playing guitars and other instruments, these are the same men from the scene of the car accident, and here they are out of character and not part of the narrative. Now he meets his friends who ask him to join them in their car, here the non-linear narrative becomes clear as the event happened before the car accident. They then drive for a short period before the car dramatically explodes, we see a close up of the band members faces and this adds some comedy to the accident. This narrative then repeats with a few variations.
Representation
A lot of quick cuts are used to represent the pace of the music, as well as close ups and meat shots of the stars. The video is presented with a green screen background; it often cuts to different images and environments to reflect the pace of the music. It also uses a filter to make the picture look grainy and old, often there are lines which go across the screen and the picture often jumps, this also reflects the pace of the music.
