3. Question:
Are we responsible to make
sure our customers are aware
of legislation and compliant?
A service is a Contract to
deliver the expected level of
compliance.
4. OPPORTUNITIES
Current bad practise should lead to new business – for example:
Does the current method of servicing meet customers expectations?
Does the current method of servicing meet the guidelines set out in PPG3
Have you changed you service methods to manage Bio fuel ? PPG7
Are you looking for new technology to deliver better value to customers?
Have you audited any of your customer sites to be sure they can manage a spill?
5. We have a fuel island,
should we have upgraded
the drainage
Our drainage contractor
always sucks the
separator dry every 6-
months to make sure we
have room for spillages
Our separator discharges
clean surface water whilst
containing all other
pollution spills
We don’t do many
Class1 separators…
We just jet wash the
filters
We have an oil in
water problem,
how do we know if
we have a filter.
Should our fuel supplier
check that we have
adequate spill control
I advised the client to use
a drain cover during oil
deliveries to stop spills
into the separator.
Our separator will
contain adblue biofuel
spills
Our separator is blocked
but we have it emptied
every year.We have fitted a valve to
the outlet of our separator
to close off the flow, so
we are covered
What
people
say
6. Observations from customer sites
Silt only removed
at discharge end inlet silt
level high
Filter assembly collapsed not
able to remove. Filter remains inside separator.
This requires man entry and full water removal
reliant on good regular maintenance to prevent man
entry for filter change
Wrong separator for site activity
Alarm supplied with a built in fault to
deactivate when service is due ???
Customer turns unit off
Filter missing, closure valve blocked
Fitted a containment valve with no idea of
containment volume
Current Servicing value too low
7. CASE 1
•The problem: Airport. Major issue with oil in water discharging from site. Regular
separator servicing done.
•Question: When did you last change the filter unit?
•The Answer: Never we don’t know how to
•Clients reaction: Cant be that simple, can it ?
CASE2
•The Problem: Blue Chip Food Manufacturer oil discharge into stream. Drainage
contractor attending 2-monthly to clean & service the separator. Removing
2500ltrs of water per visit. Annual cost £4,800 ex waste disposal.
•The observation: 35,000Ltr fuel island. Small Bypass Separator to stream. Silt
level unknown. Separator clearly blocked and in bypass.
•input: Initial separator service and filter change. Set up single service changing
filter annually.
•Clients reaction: Unhappy with service provider, service provider lost Contract.
Why didn’t environmental service provider and fuel delivery supplier check or
question the high service cost?
8. CASE 3
•Printing Company: Pollution reaching local stream. Continually investigating and
service separators which had managed spill before. Decide to fit containment valve.
•Hydro consultancy: Commissioned to design pollution containment system. Used
new spill animation mapping to predict run off and flow from all disaster types. Valve
placed in correct location to eliminate risk.
•BONUS: Pollution down to change of product from hydrocarbon based to water
miscible “environmentally friendly product”. Separator no longer able to contain
spills. Drainage set up for Hydrocarbon capture. Drainage/environment not
considered when introducing a new product.
