I’ll present some ideas on the interaction of a future search and display of 3D objects in Europeana. Harvest and display of 3D is planned for early 2012.
Given constraints. We want a uniform interaction model and no exotic plug-ins needed for 3D. Also we want as few plug-ins necessary as possible – to begin with one. In the future (HTML5) hopefully NO plug-ins. Why 3D PDF? Until HTML5 becomes a standard viewing 3D on the web will necessitate browser plug-ins. As plug-ins go PDF has very wide coverage and the format is also suitable because contextual descriptions of the 3D objects can be displayed together with the 3D objects themselves. 3D-models of various original formats can also simply be imported to 3D-PDF.
Some basic interaction rules
Some general thoughts on metadata for 3D-objects. Mostly these aren’t very 3D-centric at all!!! Good metadata for search&discovery differs little between media type!!! Europeana needs to add 3D as a media type.

If CARARE standardises on 3D PDF this is what the user will get when clicking the preview in the object display. Well, except that it should be a model of Stonehenge here and not the CCN-building in Brussels!!! This was the only 3D-PDF I had…. Why 3D PDF? When the user clicks through to original context presentation will of course vary entirely from individual data provider to individual data provider. On these landing pages it would be good to e.g. include links to the models in other formats than 3D-PDF and if available and possible the raw 3D-data for download.
When HTML5 becomes a W3C standard it seems very likely that most simple forms of rich media (video, audio, 3D) will be accessible without a need for plug-ins. In most modern web browsers basic 3D objects can be directly accessed already. The Carare workflow should be designed in such a way as to allow a shift to HTML5 as the display format..
The ASSETS project is building a search by similarity function that works with 3D. Based on one search result the user can find similar 3D-models. Or they can upload a 3D-model they have in order to find ones similar to it. Currently the ASSETS component can index these formats: .wrl, .off, .obj, .ply, .3ds. However the function can be extended to work with any open non-proprietary format. It would of course be good if the ASSETS component can work with the data provided by CARARE. ASSETS itself only has access to c.50 3D-models from UNESCO.
