Research 3.0: Libraries, Scholarly Communications, and Research Services Presented at Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) April 4, 2016, San Antonio, Texas Rebecca Bryant Visiting Project Manager, Researcher Information Systems University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Beth Namachchivaya Associate University Librarian University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The landscape of academic research has changed rapidly in the past decade, with access to high-performance networks, and the focus on data-intensive and interdisciplinary scholarship. Research libraries in North America are developing new services and programs aimed at meeting scholars’ needs for data-intensive, and interdisciplinary research support. Examples of some emerging programs include: • Supporting digital research (graphical information systems, digital humanities, survey research methodologies, working with large datasets) • Educating users about copyright and author rights • Supporting content-creation and publishing activities in numerous ways: institutional repository to store and host works, establishing maker spaces, and developing infrastructure and workflows for more formal library-located publishing efforts • Collaboration with research offices to educate researchers about federal mandates for open access publications and datasets • Establishment of data management and archival resources • Partnering with third-party vendors and with consortia to achieve scale-efficiencies and facilitate impact • Development of researcher information management systems to support collaboration, discovery, and reporting We present a case study of the development of a suite of new tools and services at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign within its newly established Office of Research to support digital scholarship and to provide sustained and broad access to research. We will also discuss the significant challenges and opportunities of library/campus partnerships for cyberinfrastructure and research support.

Keynote presentation given 13/9/16 @ ESA Earth Observation Open Science workshop 2016. "The rise in cloud computing as an e-infrastructure model is one that has the power to democratise access to computational and data resources throughout the research communities. We have seen the difference that Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) has made for different communities and are now only beginning to understand what different models further up the stack can make. It is also becoming clear that with the increase in research data volumes, the number of sources and the possibility of utilising data from different regulatory regimes that a different model of how analysis is performed on the data is possible. Utilising a "Desktop as a Service" model, with community focused applications installed on a common and well understood virtual system image that is directly connected to community relevant data allows the researcher to no longer have to consider moving data but only the final analysed results. This massively simplifies both the user model and the data and resource owner model. We will consider the specific example of the Environmental Ecomics Synthesis Cloud and how it could easily be generalised to other areas."

Studying the escaping atmospheres of highly irradiated exoplanets is critical for understanding the physical mechanisms that shape the demographics of close-in planets. A number of planetary outflows have been observed as excess H/He absorption during/after transit. Such an outflow has been observed for WASP-69b by multiple groups that disagree on the geometry and velocity structure of the outflow. Here, we report the detection of this planet’s outflow using Keck/NIRSPEC for the first time. We observed the outflow 1.28 hr after egress until the target set, demonstrating the outflow extends at least 5.8 × 105 km or 7.5 Rp This detection is significantly longer than previous observations, which report an outflow extending ∼2.2 planet radii just 1 yr prior. The outflow is blueshifted by −23 km s−1 in the planetary rest frame. We estimate a current mass-loss rate of 1 M⊕ Gyr−1 . Our observations are most consistent with an outflow that is strongly sculpted by ram pressure from the stellar wind. However, potential variability in the outflow could be due to time-varying interactions with the stellar wind or differences in instrumental precision.

Key points on the importance of heat units in plant physiology include: Predicting Phenological Events: Heat units help predict significant events in a plant’s life cycle, such as germination, flowering, and harvest times. This is vital for farmers and gardeners to optimize planting schedules and manage crop cycles efficiently. Agricultural Planning: By calculating GDDs, agriculturists can decide the best times for planting, irrigating, applying fertilizers, and controlling pests. This can lead to better crop yields and improved management of resources. Varietal Selection: Different plant varieties have specific heat unit requirements.
