TDM to VoIP to UC storyQUESTION: Who has a mobile phone today ?QUESTION: Who has a desk phone today ?QUESTION: Who finds it easier to use their deskphone than their cellphone to call one of your contacts ?With UC, experience is close to mobile phone. Great User Experience, Intuitive, etc !In HP, we are truly embracing the Unified Communications and Collaboration concept. Our goal is simple, bring communications and collaboration capabilities to all users, all devices, all networks. For example, if a mobile phone has a front facing camera, it should be able to do videoconferencing. Of course this takes time. When we bring new capabilities forward, we consistently keep UC&C in mind and aim to make the service and capability available to all users. Every year, we make significant progress in this area and bring game changing capabilities to our end users. We are improving interactions and increasing productivity significantly thanks to these efforts. Our focus is shifting away from technology delivery, to solution and service delivery with a strong focus on end user experience. Unified Communications is changing the way we interact, and HP is a leader in this area, driving technology and vendors forward with our unique vision.
Now let’s take a look at the setup within Lync itself. For each region, we leverage 6 enterprise pools, so a total of 18 pools. These pools are where the users register and most of features are provided from (IM, presence, application sharing, etc). All those pools are located in the US, in HP’s Next Generation Data Centers. To optimize call quality, we deploy all the server roles that handle the media / voice / video directly in the regions, close to the end users. Those are the mediation servers, which are used for connectivity outside of the Lync environment, the edge server, used for connectivity outside of the HP Corporate network (so remote users and federated users), and MCU servers, used as audio and video conferencing platforms. All those roles are deployed in a geo-redundant fashion within each region, in a total of 7 sites globally. With this setup, if we lose any one site in any region, we can still provide 100% of the capabilities to all our users. Finally, to tie everything together, we have a global deployment of Director servers. Those are used to point each user to the right enterprise pool to register. All in all an infrastructure built specifically for HP and allowing us to provide UC&C to 410,000 users.
