We love the grace of yoga; the fluidity as one pose morphs into another. When
Vancouver yogi Tedi Martin introduced us to Antigravity yoga, we nestled into
the safety of our duvetcocoons and the beauty of yoga fused with man's
primordial desire to fly (you're only a couple of feet off the ground but you still
feel like an acrobat).
the nuts & bolts of antigravity
yoga
What do you love, love, love about antigravity yoga?
I LOVE feeling like a kid swinging around on some ropes. The best part is it's SO MUCH
FUN! I love being upside down! Antigravity yoga (AGY) looked like an art form that I've
always wanted to try but have never had the arena to explore. Most people would
recognise the hammock from Pink's performance at the Grammy's.
Do you see it as a progression from other yoga practices or a corruption?
I believe that one's exercise should be well balanced with all types of activities. Too
much of any one thing is not healthy. AGY is just another fantastic movement form to be
added to the mix.
Does AGY work against the benefits of traditional yoga
No, they are complementary. I would never leave my regular yoga practice or even
decrease the frequency. I have been adding AGY and it has only helped. For many
people who are learning inversions, AGY helps to build that kinesthetic awareness of
having your hips above your shoulders.

history
Christopher Harrison started the
Anti Gravity Fitness and
Entertainment brand in 1990. It
started in New York, and now it's in
Germany, Austria, Switzerland,
Italy, Spain, USA and Canada.
what to expect
What should people wear for AGY?
It is important to wear sleeves (long or short) for when we wrap the hammock around
our arms. One thing I've noticed with men is it might be better to wear tighter shorts (or
bike shorts underneath) as some of the 'booty wrap' poses like to take loose shorts with
them.
Do people need to be familiar with yoga
positions before they start AGY?
Definitely not. The Steve Nash Sports Club is the
only place in Vancouver with AGY and it's a brand
new program. So in my classes, at the moment,
everybody is a beginner.
What is the biggest issue for most people
when they come in?
Trust. On so many levels. Trusting the hammock,
the teacher and themselves. One of the first
postures we do is an inversion, which can bring a
lot of fear. Everybody has been successful at this
technique and it's amazing to watch the fear
subside throughout the class. Each person leaves
feeling accomplished.
The amazing video above captures so much of
the beauty of antigravity yoga but it has to be
experienced to feel the gravitypulling,
hammocksupporting serenity of it.

The Athletic Club also features AntiGravity Yoga at its many locations. Class
focus can vary from Yoga or Cardio & Strength. I recommend everyone come
try this awesome class, you will not regret it!

Buyer bewear!!!!
I heard that this was an upscale line. Purchased a pair of the lace panties
(as others) ride up and bunch. Used their chart for the perfect size
only to find the same thing happening.
Contacted lululemon and received a reply back that I need to order a size
up or down.
16.00 is a bit for a pair of underwear that the company does not stand
by and offer some kind of assistance.

Sorry but there’s none AntiGravity here. Gravity is a constant force for us,
earthlings, unless you have a gravity zero chamber like NASA. Nice try, though.

What a great piece! I’ve always wanted to try this out. Wonder where I can find
AGY in Toronto. Hmmm.
To Google!

That is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. The video itself is lovely
and so serene, but I am intrigued by the practice. I’ve never heard of it before!
I think I’m now determined to find somewhere that practices antigravity yoga!
Do you think you will ever release a list of studios in Canada?

Are there any classes like this offered in Calgary, AB?
Comment by Andrea — May 20, 2011 @ 7:30 am
Thanks Tedi for the fabulous antigravity yoga video! The team at Interlude Spa
has been teaching AG Yoga now for 2 years and have an amazing, diverse
group of followers that have transformed not only their bodies but their
confidence in what they are truly capable of achieving by overcoming their fear
of inverting, flipping and flying! Happy Hanging! Kim

Hi Ashley and Andrea,
Antigravity yoga is a relatively new practice. I think you’ll start to see it pop up
in more and more studios as time goes on. I don’t have a list of studios offering
this right now, but, if you’re near a lululemon store, I’d pop in and see if the
educators have any tips on where to go: http://www.lululemon.com/stores/

Where in the Dallas Fort Worth area can you go to a class?

Hey Ana,
I’d recommend checking with your local store. They should have the best
information about what’s available in your area!

Where is the best place to buy an antigravity yoga hammock online ?
Comment by Cyndi — January 23, 2013 @ 2:28 pm
Hey Cyndi,
Do you have a studio in your area that offers antigravity yoga? I’d actually
recommend chatting with them about their set up. They may be able to direct
you where they got their’s from too. I am sure it’s possible to install one, though
I haven’t heard of it myself.

Aero Yoga is really amazing. And your video on agy was so tender and fresh…
please say, what music is used there? I liked it so much!
Comment by Vera — March 7, 2013 @ 11:09 am
Good question, Vera. I believe this is actually some sample music we used for
this video.
