William's wife started noticing how
forgetful he was becoming. Being
the concerned wife, she convinced
him to see a doctor. William was a
little worried when the doctor came
in. Sensing his patient's nervousness,
the first thing the doctor did was to
ask what was troubling him.
"Well," William answered. "I seem
to be getting forgetful. I'm never
sure I can remember where I put the
car, or whether I answered a letter,
or where I'm going, or what it is I'm
going to do once I get there, if I get
there. So, I really need your help.
What can I do?"
The doctor thought for a moment,
then answered in his kindest tone,
"Can you pay me in advance."
A man was getting told off by his
wife for drinking so much and all
the harm he was doing his liver. The
man nodded quietly in agreement
and then replied “Sometimes when I
reflect back on all the beer I drink I
feel ashamed.
Then I look into the glass and think
about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams.
Well what if I didn't drink this beer?
Those workers might be out of work
and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better
that I drink this beer and let their
dreams come true than be selfish
and worry about my liver."

Now that they are retired, my moth-
er and father are discussing all as-
pects of their future. "What will you
do if I die before you do?" Dad
asked Mom.
After some thought, she said that
she'd probably look for a house shar-
ing situation with three other single
or widowed women who might be a
little younger than herself, since she
is so active for her age.
Then Mom asked Dad, "What will
you do if I die first?"
He replied, "Probably the same
thing."

A young schoolboy was having a

roasting the rabbit so rare.'' In class a
few days later, the teacher asked the

The boy nervously eyed his class-

Dive Ireland International 2015 in as-
sociation with Diving Ireland (The
Irish Underwater Council) and Lough
Derg Sub Aqua Club is the highlight
of the SCUBA diving calender. This
year, the 10th Irish dive show will take
place in The Great National Abbey
Court Hotel in Nenagh Co. Tipperary
from February 28th to March 1st 2015.
The show boasts an unrivalled pro-
gramme of speakers who will cover a
wide variety of topics relating to div-
ing and the underwater world. It will
also have a magnificent photography
exhibition with a large display of im-
ages taken by underwater photogra-
phers throughout the passed 12
months. If that wasn't enough, there
will be a trade show at the event where
national and international companies
will exhibit their wares and overall it is
just a fantastic opportunity for divers,
snorkellers and lovers of the sea to
gather and catch up on the year just
passed.
LDSAC hosted a launch night at The
Abbey Court Hotel on Tuesday, Janu-
ary 13th 2015 and despite the heavy
snowfall and treacherous driving con-
ditions, it was still very well attended.
LDSAC would like to take this oppor-
tunity to thank Minister Alan Kelly,
Cllrs Hughie Mc Grath, Joe Hannigan,
Ger Darcy, Seamie Morris and Tipper-
ary County Chief Executive Joe Mc
Grath for attending the launch.
Minister for the environment, commu-
nity and local government Alan Kelly
officially launched the event and
spoke of his love of Lough Derg and
commended LDSAC (one of 83 scuba
diving clubs country wide) for all the
hard work that was put into the pitch
to host Dive Ireland 2015. He also
spoke about how the upcoming event
is likely to benefit Nenagh's commer-
cial and tourism industries as their is
approximately 1500 people expected
to attend over the two days.

Bondi Blow Dry Bar is a new busi-
ness venture which has recently
opened in Nenagh. It is located on
Silver St. and was launched by
Leanne Meehan, originally from
Bridgetown. Leanne is just back from
Australia, where she traveled and
worked in Blow Dry Bars specialis-
ing in wash and blow drys. The en-
terprising 24 year old decided to
bring Australia back to Nenagh,
hence the name Bondi Blow Dry Bar.
Leanne is very excited to meet new

Amy Ryan is a master colourist in

As you complete your CAO form
some of you might think great that is
out of the way, I can now concentrate
on my mocks and orals .Others will
fill it in and think I have not a clue, I
wish I knew. You park it because
mentally you have to concentrate on
mocks and orals. As you continue to
study the CAO form still invades
your thought process, you park it
again, and get about your mocks
preparation.
The above scenario is nor-
mal for a large percentage of stu-
dents, and it is ok to feel confused
and lost in relation to picking a
course that will lead you to employ-
ment. As an 18year old you may
think I am not ready to go to college.
Well do not go, do not be afraid to
defer that decision. Get a part-time
job , volunteer ,learn to drive ,learn a
new skill. Take time out.
If you do want to go to col-
lege and still confused set aside time
every week to talk to others, research
courses, always tuning in to the sub-
jects you will be studying on each
course. Sit in a space and think about
your career values, your interests, and
your aptitudes.
If you do not know what
you want two things can happen, you
do nothing about it and keep worry-
ing, or you do something about it and
move off the starting point.
Studying for a Leaving Cert
is tough work, but absolutely tougher
if you do not know what you are aim-
ing for! Never be afraid to express
your feelings of anxiety, fear, in rela-
tion to not knowing what career you
would like. Being confused is ok, do-
ing nothing about it, maybe not as ok.
So good luck with your forth coming
mocks and talk, talk, talk, remember-
ing you might be sure of where you
are going and you might not have a
clue, but as you prepare for the final
lap you are developing skills un be
known to yourself that you can trans-
fer to your next stage in life---organi-

One of this year’s most anticipated

the first novel by Cloughjordan-based
author Nigel Quinlan.
The Magic Maloneys and the End of
the World will be published on 7 May
by Orion Children’s Books (Hardback
at £10.99, 9781444014143), and in the
US by Roaring Brook Press as The
Maloneys’ Magical Weatherbox.

This isn’t the

Although this novel is Nigel’s first,
he is no stranger to publication. His

and This Way Up, an anthology of
Irish science fiction/fantasy writing.

Miscellany, most recently with the
poem ‘January Rises’, which was
broadcast earlier this month. He is
currently working on his second novel
for Orion Books.

Southern Tenant Folk Union are the
Edinburgh based six-piece string
band that over a series of albums
have produced a thought provoking
and arresting take on roots & folk
music. They run their own record
label and work completely inde-
pendently releasing their own music.
Through extensive touring they have
seen audiences grow year on year
and now consistently sell-out concert
venues all over the UK and Ireland.
Artistically successful their albums
have been reviewed and praised in
The Guardian, The Independent, The
Sunday Times and The Irish Times.
Started in 2006 by Belfast born mu-
sician Pat McGarvey, he has through
various different line-ups of the col-
lective, driven ever increasingly for-
ward to create roots music that has
depth both lyrically and musically.
The name itself comes from a desire
to find a union based name for the
group and one that also suited the
style of music.
Their 6th album, ‘The Chuck Norris
Project’, was released last month
launching at Celtic Connections and
takes the disparate influences the
band has, expands upon them, and
progresses the experiment ever fur-
ther whilst always posing the ques-
tion “what can we do with these
acoustic instruments?”.
The band continue to tour in the
manner of Willie Nelson, that is with
an exciting live show that engages
the audience, talks & tells stories,
discusses issues, is informal and also
one that displays the fully eclectic
and interesting music from across the
band’s career to date. And like Willie
they play the hits. They stop over in

Sports Strapping- A
Good or Bad Thing?
As ever sports person knows, strapping of periph-
eral joints by a physiotherapist prior to training or
a match is a common occurrence in any dressing
room. Players initially start getting a particular
body part strapped secondary to sustaining an inju-
ry, but does that mean you can just forget about
the rehab and go back playing?
It is important to remember that strapping of any
joint due to injury is only an immediate and tem-
porary solution. Strapping only supports the area
for the period the tape is applied and does not en-
courage any rehabilitation or retraining of the un-
derlying neuromuscular impairment during this
time. So although strapping as a standalone solu-
tion allows a person to continue to play, it does not
promote or encourage a complete return to full fit-
ness. This then becomes an issue when a player
who is eager to return to playing, skips the rehab
phase and relies on the strapping to compensate
for the insufficiencies that he/she are lacking as a
result of the injury. This ultimately means that this
player is always at a higher risk of re injury and
additional damage. It also may explain why play-
ers, although still playing, experience ongoing
pain and discomfort throughout the season.
It is therefore important to remember that rehabili-
tation is the key to a successful and uneventful re-
turn to play. It is imperative for any player who
has been injured to seek their local chartered phys-
iotherapist. This ensures that they receive the cor-
rect advice and help with managing their
initial/ongoing injury and will guarantee the de-
sign and implementation of an appropriate rehabil-
itation programme so that a return to full fitness
can be achieved. It also means that strapping no
longer becomes your primary treatment and pre-
ventative measure, but a complementary adjunct
that is part of an all round rehabilitation strategy to
keeping you fit, healthy and on top of your game.

Anxiety. Generalised Anxiety
Disorder (GAD). Rumination as a
cause of.
Some writers have described GAD as
is a feeling of trepidation about
impending doom, filling the sufferer
with unease, and a sense of being out
of control. This unease springs from
exaggerated worry and tension, even
though there is little happening to
warrant it. Sufferers may be overly
worried about health, money, family,
work and so on. They know that they
are worrying over small matters, but
cannot shake the tension and worry.
So, generalised anxiety is an
unreasonable worry that is very
difficult to control. It interferes with
living a full life, and if it is severe, it
can restrict a person to a great degree,
so that carrying out the simplest of
tasks may become a heavy burden. No
wonder that many victims suffer from
depression. They are constantly
tormented by a never-ending loop of
thinking, and rumination. It has long
been established, as I have shown in
my articles on depression that
rumination is one of the behaviours
associated with depression.
Research has shown that generalised
anxiety is much more common in
women. It is also true that women
ruminate more than men, and
rumination (obsessive thinking) is
normally associated with
anxiety/depressive symptoms. Those
who ruminate are more likely to
succumb to anxiety, because, as I
mentioned, are plagued by a never-
ending cascade of negative thinking
throughout the day. They focus on
their symptoms of distress and always
look on the negative side,
strengthening their sense of being
trapped in a negative spiral. Their
responsive thoughts about their
distress focus on their powerlessness,
and generate hopelessness. They are
uncertain about how to manage stress
situations, and whether they can
control these situations. This
uncertainty keeps them on the
treadmill of the thinking circuit, so
that the future always looks bleak.
They constantly ask questions about
their situations, focus exclusively on
their symptoms and what may happen
to them, but never find certain
answers. Consequently, they become
more sensitised and vigilant, and this
can evolve into a constant state of
anxiety, or GAD. Their questioning
of their situation continues to feed
into this anxiety. It has been
suggested that excessive rumination
is caused by building increasingly
large neural connections of negative
thoughts as the rumination intensifies.
In other words, this behaviour
practised on a continuous basis
constructs more and more negative
pathways in our brain. That is a
sobering thought for anyone with a
pessimistic outlook.
As I have said in my articles on
depression, people who ruminate are
more prone to binge drinking, eating
disorders, and self-harm.
Unfortunately, it is not easy to shed
this behaviour. Counselling can be
very helpful here, but care must be
taken that when exploring the roots of
anxiety. Rumination is not
encouraged. This is a balancing act.
For example, thinking about
childhood may be necessary, but that
does not mean becoming obsessed
with it. We go back to childhood to
emotionally re-experience it so that
we can move on. Of course, we can
use the themes of the rumination as a
way of exploring issues.
The symptoms of GAD are like those
of the other types of anxiety
mentioned below. Sufferers may be
subject to uncontrollable trembling,
muscle aches, headaches, hot flushes,
spasms, unease, shortness of breath,
palpitations, sweating, stomach aches,
and tachycardia (rapid heartbeat).
These are very distressing symptoms,
and experiencing them may fuel
feelings of anxiousness. There is a
danger that they might be mistaken as
the cause of GAD, rather than its
symptom.
Some sufferers feel fearful and
aggressive, and others suffer spells of
dizziness. They cannot sleep
properly, lose their appetite, are easily
startled, and find it difficult to
concentrate. They may be restless and
fidgety, may also have the urge to go
to the bathroom frequently.
