  1. HI. I am doing my element report on Calcium…
  2. General Info. Calcium’s chemical symbol is Ca. The atomic number of calcium is 20 and its weight is 40.078 AMU. The density of calcium is 1.55 g/cm3.
  3. Calcium’s protons and neutrons are both 20. Therefore the isotopes are 40.
  4. There are manly different uses of calcium. A large number of the uses deal with health related issues. Calcium can be used for controlling a syndrome, condition, or irritation, for example pre-eclampsia,heartburn,high cholesterol, and lyme disease. Calcium is needed to maintain a healthy body by keeping a regular heartbeat, contracting muscles and more.
  5. Is calcium important to health? Yes, Calcium is a necessity for our health. Calcium strengthens bones. Without calcium our bones would be incredibly brittle and break. The recommended daily calcium intake for people age 8-19 is about 1,300mg per day. Lack of sufficient calcium consumption can lead to Osteoporosis at a later age. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones, which commonly leads to fractures in the hip, spine, or wrist. Studies suggest that calcium intake can reduce the risk of getting certain types of cancer like colorectal or breast cancer. Overall calcium is a big contributor to reducing pain, irritation, and disease.
  6. Is calcium dangerous? No, Calcium is not a poisonous or dangerous element. It is found in organisms and it is necessary maintain good health. Now, with that said it can cause milk-alkali syndrome only if calcium carbonate antacids (something like tums) are misused. Milk-alkali syndrome is when you have too much calcium in your blood (this is also known as hypercalcemia.) If left untreated, hypercalcemia can lead to kidney failure. Otherwise calcium is safe and needed for a healthy life-style.
  7. Where is calcium found? Calcium is found in a variety of places. Some include everyday food items we eat, such as dairy products, vegetables and fruits. Calcium is common in dark green leafy vegetables. Others are items we wouldn’t eat which would be rocks, chalk, and seashells. Also calcium is found in us. We have tons of calcium in our bones and teeth.
  8. Some fun facts about calcium. Calcium is the 5th most abundant element on the crust. It makes up more than 3% of the crust The name "calcium" comes from the Latin word "calcis" meaning "lime”. Now, isn’t it ironic that the Latin root of calcium means lime and calcium is known for treating lyme disease.
