4. Confucius
By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by
reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which
is easiest; and third by experience, which is the
bitterest.
-- Chinese philosopher & reformer (551 BC - 479 BC)
5. Introductory Remarks
Contemporary China is a Pandora’s box of
surprises, mysteries, and contradictions. A Chinese
born and U.S. naturalized middle-aged woman once
remarked to me: “Life is hard in China.” Is it?
Perhaps. Devastating earthquakes, chemical spills,
diseases (SARs/Swine flu), competition for jobs,
corruption, education, quality of life, rural/urban
conflict, ethnic strife, growing wealth inequality,
government intervention and control, political
movements, and more typify life in China today.
9. China borders 14 nations (counted clockwise from south):
Vietnam, Laos, Burma, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan,[75]
Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia
and North Korea.
18. Bill Gates
“In China, when you’re one in a
million, there are 1,300 other
people just like you.”

20. City Populations

population of one million plus. Shanghai is
the largest with 17 million.
• The U.S. has 9-10 cities with one million
population. New York City is the largest
with 8.3 million.
21. More Facts
• Number of college graduates per year
– 1,750,000 USA
– 6 million plus China
• Educators in China are quite uniformly
held in high esteem.” 31
• Over 430 million Internet users in China
• 271 billionaires in China
• 18 million autos sold a year, making China
the world’s largest auto market
31. Shanghai
Unlike many cities in China with long and varied
histories, Shanghai's history is quite short. The British
opened a concession in Shanghai after the first Opium
War and ignited Shanghai's evolution. Once a small
fishing village on the edge of the muddy Huang Pu
River, it has become one of the world's most modern
and sophisticated cities.
