Perlane is a natural filler made of
FDA-approved, fully degradable
hyaluronic acid. It’s introduced
beneath the skin’s surface via a tiny
injection to lift the lip, treat wrinkles
and fill folds in the skin. The result is
a youthful, revitalized appearance.
Similar fillers include Belotero,
Restylane, and JUVEDERM XC and
JUVEDERM VOLUMA.
What is Perlane?

Perlane and other fillers are used to help plump the skin and fill in wrinkles
with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in
the body, with the highest concentration found in the skin cells. Hyaluronic
acid is responsible for keeping the complexion’s collagen supply hydrated
and nourished, allowing the skin to remain firm and well-moisturized.
As we age, our cells steadily lose the amount of hyaluronic acid they need to
maintain skin structure and elasticity. Our complexion becomes drier and we
begin to notice signs of aging. Injecting a hyaluronic acid filler like Perlane
under the skin can help it regain its elasticity and and reduce the
appearance of wrinkles.
How does Perlane work?

After touring the facility and consulting with Dr.
Schlessinger, a staff member will take photos of your
face for documentation and go over options. Once
you’re ready for your procedure, the injection area will
be cleaned and a topical numbing solution will be
applied. Dr. Schlessinger will perform the injection
himself. He adds a super potent topical numbing
medicine with the filler and a topical numbing cream.
The injection is quick and nearly painless. You may feel
a small sting. You can then resume all normal
activities. Dr. Schlessinger will schedule a follow-up
consultation with you at no charge to check on
progress and healing.
What happens during the Perlane procedure?

Perlane nicely fills in fine lines on the
upper and lower lip that are not
severe enough to require laser
resurfacing. Deeper wrinkles and
folds in the cheek area are frequently
treated. Perlane is also used for lip
enhancement, and it has twice the
longevity of standard collagen
implants.
What areas of the face can be treated with
Perlane?

Results are highly individual. Explain your goals to Dr.
Schlessinger, as your results will depend upon the course of
treatment you decide on together. Most folds and wrinkles
require just one treatment with a maintenance treatment
needed around six months later. Because Perlane is like an ice
cube that slowly dissolves over time, you will not see
overnight results. Instead, aging skin will improve over a
period of months.
Your results also depend upon the areas being treated and
how much filler is used in each area.
The Perlane procedure is not permanent. If you’re not satisfied
with the results, you have the option of not electing to have a
touch-up procedure.
What results can I expect from my Perlane procedure?

The side effects of Perlane are minimal and
shouldn’t prevent you from going about
your normal daily routine. Patients
sometimes experience tenderness and
swelling in the injection area and temporary
bruising, particularly in the lips. While the
area around the eye responds well to
Perlane, Dr. Schlessinger recommends
patients try Obagi ELASTIderm products to
target the eye area and prolong the effects
of the filler.
What are the side effects of Perlane?

Generally, Perlane works best on deeper folds and
wrinkles, but any patient who would like to see an
improvement in premature signs of aging is a good
candidate. Dr. Schlessinger’s first priority is safety.
Depending on any medications you may be taking and
other procedures you’ve had or plan to have, you may
need to proceed with caution when exploring Perlane. Dr.
Schlessinger will offer his expert opinion about whether
the Perlane procedure is right for you during your initial
consultation.
The pictures to the right show one patient’s results when
Perlane was used in conjunction with Botox. Many
patients achieve optimal results when they combine filler
treatments with with wrinkle relaxers like Botox and
Dysport.
Who is a good candidate for Perlane?
