For children who feel uncomfortable about the shape of their ears or the
degree to which their ears protrude from the side of their head, otoplasty,
otherwise known as ear pinning, is a safe, surgical option.
Experts agree that ears reach complete development by the time children are
five or six years of age. Since teasing and ridicule can have a negative effect on
a child’s self-esteem, parents can begin to look into otoplasty at this age.
The procedure, which involves general anesthesia, an incision and sutures at
the back of the ear, and the possible removal of cartilage, is done on an
outpatient basis. Surgery itself takes about two hours and the patient will leave
with a headwrap.

Due to some mild pain involved, the child will be given oral medication to
control any discomfort and should be able to return to school after one week
has passed. Contact sports and physical activity should be limited, but within a
month’s time, the ears will show a marked improvement.
