Now… lets get back to 3D Modeling. As we all know, 3D modeling has many challenges. There are many rules and procedure that we need to setup, learn and be familiar with before we can start building anything. But let’s take a look at the key challenges of 3D modeling before we move into Solid Edge.
These to me are the 4 key challenges in 3D modeling.
Design creation can be difficult and tedious as most 3D modeling software require lots of preparation before you even get started. Such as defining dimensions and relationships of parts.
To revise an existing design can also be quite challenging especially in complex models. Changing a part in the design might break several other parts in the compete model and render the whole model impractical.
Parts design comes from various suppliers and very often they have existing drawing from a different CAD software. Importing and editing these drawing can be quite impossible in some CAD systems and require redrawing.
Due to the complexity of 3D CAD software, learning to use it can be quite challenging.
Let’s me take you into the world of SOLID EDGE with Synchronous Technology. Before I explain Synchronous Technology, let me first share with you (CLICK) the SOLID EDGE advantage.
Solid Edge has many advantages that will enhance the way you design and bring products to market. And one of the many things we want to do is to be able make 3D modeling simpler. This is exactly what SOLID EDGE will do for you.
3D Modeling made simple. This is achieved through 4 key initiatives. They are True 3D, Design Faster, Highly Intuitive, and Extremely Flexible.Let me explain.
In the world of 3D modeling, we know that things are not so easy. Lots of preparation and planning is required before we can start to create anything. In Solid Edge there is no need [CLICK] to preplan. This would also mean that [CLICK] parts’ relationships can be established almost anytime and anywhere.Being a true 3D modeling software, Solid Edge easily builds [CLICK] 3D models from 2D drawings. This is quite an amazing capability in Solid Edge. You will see this later in the Demo.
Being able to design faster is key to many businesses. Design faster would mean that you (CLICK)
… can bring products to market faster. Time to market is key to every business as it allows you to be ahead of your competition. Bringing your design faster to market would also mean [CLICK] that you will realized your revenue faster. We can do all these with Solid Edge because Solid Edge allows [CLICK] you to edit in real-time. A capability the speeds up the design process significantly.
One of the most important thing of any CAD software is that it should be easy to use. Highly Intuitive is what Solid Edge is all about.
Solid Edge has one of the most Intuitive user interface among all other 3D CAD software. From starting up the software to working through every process of your model design, Solid Edge lets you focus more on your design and less on figuring out the workings for the software. This significantly reduces the time and cost of learning.[CLICK]Being highly intuitive also mean that you can easily create digital prototype. This is one of the most valuable benefits of Solid Edge. With Digital Prototyping, you eliminate costly design error on the drawing board and not during manufacturing or in the market. Imagine the impact to the cost and brand if a product recall is required due to design errors.
Very often we come across drawing of different file formats that we need to use or integrate into existing projects. This can be quite challenging as the format might not be supported by the CAD software that you are using. Even though you are able to import the foreign parts into your drawing, you might not be able to edit them.
Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology eliminates this problem. It is extremely flexible in handling imports of foreign parts drawings. Being able to reuse imported objects cut design cost. [CLICK]Imported parts can also be edited immediately and directly. This tremendously increases time productivity. Changes are easily done and the foreign parts can be integrated into existing drawing seamlessly.
So here you go. The Solid Edge advantage.True 3D… Design Faster … Highly Intuitive … Extreme Flexible
Earlier in the presentation I mentioned Synchronous Technology. So (CLICK)
… what is Synchronous Technology? Well it is a unique technology that is part of Solid Edge that keeps everything in Sync without you even notice it. Before I explain further, let us take a look at 2 different types of modeling.Namely History-based Modeling and History-free Modeling.Let’s first talk about …
…. History-based Modeling. In history-based modeling, models are driven by dimension. They are very dependent on what the designer had planned and defined before jumping into the model creation. Because of this… history-based modeling is highly automated. This dependency also have major set backs. It is inflexible and is difficult to scale when the model gets complex with many-featured parts. On the other hand…
… History-free Modeling is highly flexible. Editing can be done anytime without dependency on history. The interaction with each parts in the model is very direct. Because of this lack of dependency on history, History-free Modeling is very scalable. However, the problem with this type of modeling is that it cannot be automated easily. Changing of part’s dimension can break the usability of related parts.
Having identify the strengths and weakness of both models… we want to marry the strengths from both of these models
Taking the strengths from both models, we then created [CLICK] Synchronous Technology.
You can say that Synchronous Technology is the [CLICK] …
… best of both worlds. Having the advantages of history-based modeling as well as the great things about history-free modeling. Many well-known brands are using Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology to design their products. Let me now show you some real example of products designed using this technology.
Solid Edge is used to design high tech and electronics products such as the office printer you see here.
Tefal uses Solid Edge to design house-hold consumer electronic products like this pressure cooker.
How about Yachts. These too can be designed with Solid Edge.
The complex mechanics of this luxury watch was design with Solid Edge.
Furniture design and other interior products.
This kitchen is also designed with Solid Edge.
IndustrialMachines too can be designed with Solid Edge
How about Yachts. These too can be designed with Solid Edge.
The internal parts of heavy equipment such as the Ecotruck you see here.
How about Yachts. These too can be designed with Solid Edge.
What you just saw here are products designed with a great technology that help makes the complexity in 3D design simpler and faster. You can say Synchronous Technology makes Solid Edge do these great things in 3D modeling.Parts in the model are [CLICK] Synchronized solved.
… Synchronized solved. When you make edits to a part dimension, all other related parts are automatically adjusted to accommodate the new dimension. This Driving 3D [CLICK]…
… dimensions capability takes the complexity out of complex parts design. Another powerful capability of Synchronous Technology is [CLICK] …
… Live rules. Live rules allow the designer to turn on and off constrains anytime during the design process. And of course there are many other benefits of Synchronous Technology that we will not discuss today.
Let me now show you a couple of short videos that will further illustrate the benefits of Solid Edge.
If you are looking to Design better, SOLID EDGE ST4 is your answer.Hi, I’m xxx of yyy and I’d like to spend the hour and a half showing you some of the latest new capabilities in Solid Edge ST4, we’ll cover the highlights and see a short demonstration.First I’d like to recognize Miller-St. Nazianz, Inc., a company located in north America for their design of an Agricultural sprayer that was completely modeled in Solid Edge.
Today we’re going to see how the new release of Solid Edge ST4delivers new tools to help machine designers and engineers develop better products faster. We’ll see some specific new capabilities inAdvanced machine designExpanded collaborationSimulation tuned for the sheet metal designerAndContinued drafting that redefines world-class drawing production
Let’s first look at some exciting new advancements in machine design. Many of these new capabilities leverage synchronous technology for accelerated design, faster revisions, and better 2D and 3D reuse.SinceSolid Edge is designed by engineers for engineers, our solution offers superior design and modeling for both casual and experienced users. You may remember that we recently integrated synchronous and ordered features into a single system, so designers can start with the most convenient technology and change design methods at any time depending on need.Let’s take a closer look.
A common type of part found in many products such as machines are shafts. We’ve added some new capabilities within synchronous technology that speeds creating and editing of revolved features. We’ve simplified the general workflow for revolved commands, just choose a region and drag the steering wheel to the desired axis and drag to create the revolved feature. Less mouse clicks will help you create parts like shafts easier and faster. For edits, we now have an option to create Live Sections automatically. Dimensions used to define the initial cross section transfer to the live section so you can make immediate edits using the creation intent. While we mention shafts here, automatic live sections can be automatically added to any revolved feature. We’ve also made hole placement easier. Similar to tangent plane creation, holes can be dragged to any location on a shaft with precise control over its exact placement. At the end of the day, we’ve made creation and editing of revolved features much easier for common parts such as shafts.
Another milestone in synchronous modeling is web networks are now available as synchronous features. The process of creation is simple, just chose a sketch, adjust the options such as Thickness, Finite Depth, Draft Angle, and the feature is created. The real magic happens during edits. You can drag any face of the web network and individual tangent connected webs move as well, mimicking how 2D sketches would react. However, only the affected 3D geometry regenerates not the entire feature or model. Imagine the performance gains with this new feature. As an added bonus, Driving dimensions may be placed to midpoints of Webs/Ribs giving designers precise control during revisions.
One legendary capability in synchronous technology is the ability to add 3D dimensions and relationships to complete models. This technique gives engineers greater flexibility in establishing design intent on completed or imported models and make changes faster because unnecessary model regenerations are avoided. Now available in Solid Edge ST4 are new 3D relationships that can be applied to native or imported parts. A 3D Offset Relationship lets you control the offset between faces and is handy for specifying clearances and edits can be made to either face. Offsets defined in 2D during profile drawing will be move to 3D to preserving intent.Synchronous designs also offer a3D model relationship for preserving horizontal and vertical conditions as well as establishingalignments. For example you can fix faces to remain horizontal or vertical or you can also use this relationship to maintain centering between mid-points of 3D faces. Even if you establish centering during 2D sketch development, those relationships transfer to 3D models. This is a perfect way to keep cutouts or protrusions centered without the use of dimensions. These new relationship types let designers better capture and manage design intent.
Solid Edge ST4 also includes some new relationships that help you better define intent at the assembly level. The first of these new relationships is a center plane relationship that lets you position one part between others. A perfect example is where a roller needs to get evenly placed between mounting blocks. This relationships simplifies centering and keeps it even if the spacing changes. Another classic example is where a bolt or linkage needs to slide along a slot, this relationship lets components slide within bounding faces even if they are tapered yet the part will always stay centered during assembly motions. We've also added the ability to set a range limit on assembly mates and is helpful in limiting motion when collisions aren’t available to define the range. Also, a dedicated command is now available for all 3D model relationships in part or assembly. This speeds design time for establishing intent on completed models because commands are clearly listed on the ribbon so you just choose the command and pick the geometry. These new relationships help you build assemblies faster, while preserving design intent during edits or animations.
Some other great new enhancements that simplify assembly design are tools to speed part placement and modeling.A new capability within the steering wheel, lets users copy, move or rotate parts, yet new relationships that define position can be created. This auto-relate option adds constraints such as mates or aligns between the source and target parts saving design time by automatically re-using relationships defined on the initial part.Another great enhancement in ST4 that speeds assembly level modeling is the ability to apply rounds and chamfersto multiple parts simultaneously. Just like drilling a hole through multiple parts to ensure fit and position, these new commands let you round or chamfer edges guaranteeing an exact match between parts. Other users are eliminating sharp edges across multiple parts faster as edges of different parts can be chosen at the same time.
To help designers speed assembly design, we’re promoting a 3rd party offering of FREE catalog parts. Powered by Cadenas, available is an on-line collection of catalog orsupplier parts from100’s of manufacturers around the world.Available content are OEM components such as valves, u-joints, andactuators and are available in native Solid Edge format. This offering is a great compliment for our existing Solid Edge Standard Parts that includes nuts, bolts, washers, and other fasteners. To help you find the right component faster, a built in search mechanism allowing searches based on Vendor name, Dimensions, Part number, and even by a geometric match.Visit http://solidedge.partcommunity.comor look for the link on the Solid Edge starup page in ST4.
Solid Edge ST4 also improves the overall design experience with a much improved display. During design, your models will look more realistic right out of the box, notice the example shown here. We still offer advanced photorealistic rendering, but the default display for Solid Edge now supports reflections, a virtual mirrored floor even with casted shadows. We’ve simplified setting the view quality with a new auto-sharpen for setting edge quality from low for higher performance through ultra-high display for getting superb edge detail. If you want to see you models with a vanishing point, just press the Ctrl and Shift the rotate the mouse scroll wheel and you will see a much finer setting of the view perspective.
Let’s see a short demonstration of these advanced machine design capabilities .Filename: 01_AdvancedMachineDesignModeling_01 Advanced machine design modelingIntroSolid Edge has set the standard for streamlining 3D design and ST4 let you do more even faster! We’ll show some advanced machine design modeling with this utility vehicle.More realistic designs with the default displayFirst, notice the improved graphics, models are reflected from a virtual floor and cast shadows to give more realism, of course photorealistic rendering is also available when you want to bring your models to life.Reuse 2D data & Revolved featureOne key aspect of Solid Edge is its ability to leverage 2D drawings into the 3D process. Here we’ll reuse an existing 2D drawing to start a new the roller design. Details and intent defined in the 2D drawing are automatically transferred to 3D and quickly give us a starting point. Creating common parts such as shafts is now easier in ST4. Simply select the region and drag the steering wheel to the axis of revolution to revolve the profile to your desired angle, symmetrically or a complete 360 degrees. Dimensions used to define the initial cross section transfer to the live section which is created automatically, so you can make immediate edits using the original design intent. We’ve also made it easier to place holes accurately on cylindrical faces at any angle in a single operation, and any intersecting ‘live sections’ automatically update. We’ll finish the roller design by adding some bearings and a shaft from the standard parts library and using our unique steering wheel to speed up the process.Assembly DesignSolid Edge also makes reuse of native or imported 3D parts fast and easy. As we reuse the existing wheel brackets, a new option automatically finds and applies new assembly relationships. This handy feature speeds design while parts are copied or moved. With the brackets in position we’re now ready to place the roller sub- assembly designed earlier. Smart tools such as capture fit ensure components snap together without fuss while a new ‘centre-plane’ relationship ensures the roller remains centered between the brackets even if the faces are parallel or tapered. Parts always stay centered when adjacent components are repositioned or moved.Synchronous part revision To ensure they fit first time it’s beneficial to design or modify parts in the context of the surrounding assembly, synchronous technology makes this fast and easy.A unique concept of synchronous technology is the ability to add 3D dimensions to models at any time to establish design intent when it’s known and make faster changes by avoiding unnecessary model regenerations.Synchronous designs now also include a 3D model relationship for establishing and preserving horizontal and vertical conditions. Making the sheetmetal bracket perpendicular to the base only requires a single click. This new capability simplifies design because you make edits as needed not per the creation steps. You can make faces horizontal, vertical or maintain centering between mid-points of 3D faces. For example: Here, the centre plane relationship is being used, to keep the hole for the Axel roller aligned to the vertical face at the front of the part. Now when the hole is moved surrounding geometry also updates. Having the ‘hole’ drive previous features ‘after the fact’ is something unique to synchronous technology.Moving back to the assembly noticed the centre-plane relationship keeps the roller in the correct position, even though the angle of the bracket has changed. We can replicate this sub-assembly in a single operation completing this part of the design.MotionTo control how assembled components interact when moved, a new ‘range limit’ lets you set motion distances. Once established, more realistic animations can be seen.ConclusionWith these advanced machine design capabilities, Solid Edge sets the standard for accelerated design, faster revisions, and superior 2D and 3D reuse.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYWe have also improved edit performance for very complex parts in synchronous technology. As with many types of edits in synchronous, you can get nearly instant edit performance and now this great performance extends to other more complicated parts.Designers making diameter or radius edits to partsmany concentric cylinders will see a nearly instant change for most cases.Fast performance with parts with many locked dimensions should also be seen.Lastly, when moving holes with parts that have many multiple coplanar axes will also result in nearly instant edits. Not all parts fall into this category but if you need to make revisions to complicated parts expect faster performance with synchronous technology.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYA very common assembly technique used on the shop floor to connect parts is to bolt them together. Solid edge ST4 focuses on this design tasks seeking get your designs completed much faster. It all starts with selection and now you can choose fasteners based on material or grade, and we offer improved size filtering and a handy option to save your favorite stack settings. You can also place fasteners much faster leveraging the new symmetric relationship and assembly, by placing fastener stacks in slots. A new flip option allows you to control the orientation. We’ve also improved documentation of fasteners on drawings so if you’re familiar with auto ballooning, you can now balloon an entire fastener stack with a single click.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYExploded drawing views are a great way to show all the parts in your designs and can help document an assembly sequence. Some new options in solid edge ST4 lets you draw custom explode flow lines. A path express like tool simplifies creation where you simply click key points and choose the best route. Flow line elements can be split, deleted or dragged along any principal axis. These flow lines are ideal for displaying in use in drawing views are independent of actual explode events.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYWe have also made many enhancements to our process specific applications. For example, users now get dynamic feedback to edits in environments such as Frames, Pipes, Tubes and Assembly features, because parts update live during a drag. There’s also added Undo/Redo support. The express route environment now includes the key point curve command for better defining 3D paths in space, and the machinery now include several new part types such as fasteners forBolts, Nuts, Washers as well as Frame Components. The piping library offers more fittings and Pipes.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYAs with every release solid edge ST4 places a strong focus on usability. Some key enhancements are seen in the Assembly shortcut menu. The next time you right click on a part or sub-assembly, you’ll see a simplified list of commands listing the most relevant and less common operations are now in fly-out menus.Command defaults across the product have been improved so you can expect less interaction when setting command options.Helper or warning messages that display during command usage have been improved to give you better feedback on the status of an operation.Even the performance of the selecttool has been improved by2.5 times overall, but up to 5x with some operations,so youcan locate and pick parts or faces faster.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYSolid edge has a great newsgroup where users like you can provide technical support across all areas of the product. Hundreds of Solid Edgeusers participate helping others withcommands, process, workflows. It’s a wonderful community where users help each other out. We've made accessing this newsgroup faster and easier. Minimize alldocuments in Solid Edge and on the Starup page you will find a link to the forum. You don’t need a WEBKEY account to enter the news group, however to keep critical areas in GTAC secure, you’ll still need your webkey account to access areas such as licensing andmaintenance pack downloads. If you’re not familiar with this news group, check it out, chances are there’s someone willing to help you use Solid Edge better. This forum has a built in language translator so you can review or make posts in news in local language.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYA few minutes ago we saw some better out of the box rendering capabilities using the default Solid Edge display where parts and assemblies will look more realistic during typical design. For a more realistic look, use our advanced rendering found in the explode rendering an animate environment. While this has been in Solid Edge for many years, we have made it faster and easier to use. You can expect much better results with the out of the box settings because we now map materials better, and include more realistic scenes and lights. And we continue to address performance as rendering is now multi-threaded. This work was started in ST3 and expanded in ST4.The images you see here were the results from a “first pass” in our advanced rendering application. Get great results with little to no added work—the perfect way to improve your customer presentations.

With solid edge ST4 you can design better. Some latest advancements aid machine design modeling by leveraging synchronous technology for accelerated design faster revisions, and better 2D and 3D reuse.Solid edge ST4 is also designed by engineers for engineers for providing superior design and modeling to both casual and experienced users.Leveraging the integrated design environment launched about a year ago, synchronous and ordered features can be used in a single system. You can model using the most convenient technology without having to make a choice yet change design methods later. From model creation, handling ECO's, and working with imported data, solid edge can help increased revenues by taking tasks that normally take hours down to seconds.
NOTE TO FIELD MARKETING: REPLACE THIS CASE STUDY AS NEEDED WITH A LOCAL ONE. MAKE SURE THE SELECTED CASE STUDY IS BASED ON SIMULATION AND DRAWS OUT SOME TANGIBLE BENEFITS Let’s take a look at a very successful solid edge customer Leutenegger + Frei. This company is a leader in electric bakery equipment and was challenged with trying to standardize models for improved re-use that would ultimately shorten times to market. After adopting Solid Edge with synchronous technology their designers reported a huge time savings. What used to take 3 weeks now takes only 1 day to complete. Those are huge savings with a tremendous positive impacts to their customer. Imagine the cost savings with each project. Product quality has also increase as their engineers report fewer part interferences.
Solid Edge ST4 introduces many new enhancements that expand your ability to collaborate .Some new capabilities within teamcenter express Leverage JT helping you work more efficiently with suppliers and customers, while other enhancements speed revisions with easier tracking and incorporation of change. Reuse more imported model types for lower design costs.Let’s take a closer look.
Many Solid Edge users need to work with CAD data in multiple formats. This can be data from suppliers or customers, or they may have another division in their company that uses a different CAD systemIn Solid Edge ST4 we have added several new capabilities to the integration with Teamcenter and Teamcenter Express that enable more consistent and efficient processes when working with multi-CAD dataTeamcenter and Teamcenter Express automatically converts CAD models from Solid Edge, NX, CATIA V5, Pro/E and Inventor into JT format and manage this file alongside the native CAD fileThese capabilities leverage the “JT” format – a lightweight but accurate representation of 3D CAD models that improves flexibility and performance when visualizing and analyzing 3D dataIf the original non-native CAD model is updated, these changes are reflected in the Solid Edge assembly the next time it is opened ensuring that the latest version of a vendor provided CAD models are always being usedThe “Save As” command can also be used on these vendor provided models to break this link and take control of the data for further modifications in the Solid Edge environment, this operation will also improve the performance when opening large assembliesUse of JT also improves performance, visualization, and BOM generation
Another common requirement is to take existing Solid Edge data from an older project or from a suppler and incorporate this into a new design projectThis can now be accomplished by simple drag and drop from the Parts Library, with Item numbers and filenames being reassigned by Teamcenter to ensure the new data is consistent with current standards for part numbering and file namingSimilar enhancements apply to data supplied in neutral formats such as STEP or Parasolid. Again drag and drop can be used to bring this data into Solid Edge from the Parts Library, with Item numbers and filenames being assigned by Teamcenter. The neutral file and the Solid Edge model are managed as datasets linked to the same Item. Changes to the original STEP or Parasolid file are synchronized when the Solid Edge file is openedFor both of these processes this managed approach represents a significant improvement to the previous manual workflow where these files where opened from and saved to the local hard drive
Another enhancement in the area of assembly design processes is the synchronization of Solid Edge “Item numbers” that are used to identify and locate parts in a parts list and in balloons on an assembly drawing, with the “Find” number in TeamcenterThe synchronization is bi-directional – so changes made in either Teamcenter or Solid Edge will be reflected in the other applicationWhere multiple components of the same cross section but different lengths, such as piping and frame components, are used in an assembly,; the length of the component is now used to determine uniqueness for BOM reporting
The ability to search quickly and accurately across large amounts of data is a key capability of our data management solutionsUsers can now specify a limit on the number of search results that are obtained – this addresses the situation where a user specifies a search that returns a huge amount of data and has to wait for the data to be returned before they can refine their search. Options are available to modify the search when this situation is detected, to show a first set of results, to cancel the search or to proceed with the original search.Expanded support for the Teamcenter data model is also now available with support for the use of primary and secondary business objects that simplify the management of item types and attributes. With this enhancement, attributes are now stored logically on the Item and Item Revision objects instead of on forms
Let’s see a short demonstration of expanded collaboration using imported JT CAD models.FileName: 03_ExpandedCollaboration_JT_01IntroSolid Edge ST4, working together with Teamcenter and Teamcenter Express, adds new capabilities that enable more efficient and consistent processes to be followed when incorporating multi-CAD data into your Solid Edge assembly designsIn this example we will incorporate a control panel sub-assembly - that has been designed for us by an external supplier in a 3rd party CAD format - into our lawnmower designStructure managerWe start by using the Structure Manager in Teamcenter Express to examine our existing side panel assemblyReuse data/JTNext we paste the control panel sub- assembly into the side panel assembly structure – the sub-assembly is added to our assembly structure and is also displayed graphically in a default location in the Viewer Panel. 3D models from 3rd party CAD solutions are automatically converted into the lightweight JT format for increased assembly design performance while maintaining geometrical accuracy. Now we close that Structure Manager and use the Explorer Panel to select the updated side panel sub-assembly – a double-click opens this assembly in Solid EdgeA dialog confirms that a new sub-assembly has been detected and that the side panel assembly will be checked out from Teamcenter Express so that it can be modifiedAssembly modelingWe in place activate the sub-assembly so we can use geometry from its components to position it correctlyWe can use faces and edges from the control panel sub-assembly that was modeled in a 3rd party CAD solution to position this sub-assembly accurately relative to similar geometry from the side-panel that was modeled in Solid Edge We find that the hole locations in the control panel sub-assembly are not aligned with the holes in our side panel. In this example we decide to change the hole locations in our side panel to address this issue - again we can reference geometry from the 3rd party CAD data to complete this edit accuratelyAnother benefit of these new capabilities is that any future changes to the 3rd party CAD data will be automatically flagged to the Solid Edge user whenever they open the assembly. We examine the assembly to verify that we have completed the required modifications - and then save the completed assembly.Model/DB synchronizationDuring the Save operation Teamcenter Express detects that changes have been made to the assembly and presents a dialog to the user confirming that the assembly will be checked back in to the database – this ensures that all our changes are captured and are visible to other users.

Solid Edge simulation can be used to analyze a wide variety of models and some new capabilities in ST4 make simulations on sheet metal parts faster and more reliable. With these new capabilities you can expectFaster simulations allows more design integrations in less timeGreater accuracy with smaller models for higher quality productsHybrid shell and solid simulation support complex designs giving ability to virtually test more designs
Solid Edge Simulation’s mid-surface extraction capability serves to speed up and simplify the simulation process for sheet metal parts. For thin walled components such as Sheet metal models, Solid Edge Simulation finds the mid-surfaces and meshes them with 2D shell elements resulting in a finite element model that is more accurate, much smaller and so faster to solve.Finding mid-surfaces of components can be performed at the assembly level, simplifying the validation process, and as the mid-surfaces are ordered features, they are automatically kept up to date. This mid-surfacing capability can also be applied to generic thin-walled parts, such as plastic components. Besides creating 2D shell models with mid-surfacing, hybrid or mixed models can also be created that comprise both solids and shells. The correct mesh at the interface between solid and shell elements is generated automatically. The value here is being able to analyze products such as machines that include sheet metal parts much faster.
Solid Edge Simulation also includes several enhancements to the meshing capability. You can now apply mapped meshes on surfaces that create an ordered mesh comprising well shaped elements. Further controls for minimum elements on edges have been added to ensure that any model created will comply with the desired quality criteria during model creation. For example a setting of 2 for minimum elements on an edge will ensure that small edges will be represented with a minimum of two elements in the final mesh. Also for ensuring creation of accurate elements an angle tolerance has been introduced. To ensure that small features in the model are not overly represented and meshed with too many elements a Maximum Elements on Small Features tolerance has been introduced. Curvature based refinement allows Femap to increase mesh refinement automatically where needed in the model to capture sufficient model detail and conserve accuracy. Around stress raisers such as holes in the model several well shaped elements are needed if accurate results are required in such areas. Quad Edge Layers ensures that quadrilateral elements are placed around such features which will generate more accurate results.
Solid Edge Simulation now includes a new element type for analyzing frame type components. This new 1-D element type is built into the Frame environment and can be used to determine deflection and stress for parts such as I-beams, T-beams, box beams, and C-channels that are automatically generated by the Frame Command. Creating studies is simple as users only need to identify parts are to be analyzed and Solid Edge automatically applies fast-solving 1-D elements during the mesh operation. The results are a much faster analysis without sacrificing accuracy.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYEdge to surface gluing is now supported by Solid Edge Simulation. This allows edges of shell model components to be connected or glued directly onto faces of other shell or solid components. Connecting up models in this way is very fast and convenient as mesh congruency – this is matching element sizes and node positions – is not required. Another benefit is that moment transfer that is a problem with standard shell to solid connections is handled automatically.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYSolid Edge Simulation is also much easier to use in Solid edge ST4. For editing a study , simply double click in the Study Navigator to access and modify the parameters. The color bar has an improved numerical formatting making it easier to read, and you can now directly edit material and temperature references in the model. Setup of model contact is now much easier with quick face to face connections, and the symbol display for contact source and target has been improved. A material table is now available linking material to gauge.
Let’s see a short demonstration of Simulation for the sheet metal designer.Filename:05_SimulationForSheetMetalDesigners_01 Simulation for sheet metal designers0:00 - Open wheel assemblySolid Edge Simulation allows everyday engineers to test design ideas as they work. In ST4 it’s now even easier to ‘idealize’ or optimize your designs with mesh refinements, more mid surface and assembly design capabilities for improved machine design analysis, especially those with sheet metal components.Solid Edge Simulation’s mid-surface capability allows fast-solving 2D shell elements to be used which speed up an analysis for sheet metal components. To simplify the mid-surface creation, the surfaces can be extracted at the assembly level and used in conjunction with regular solids in other parts of the model. Furthermore, mid-surfaces are associative and automatically kept up to date.1:04 - Create an analysis between the 2 partsSolid Edge simulation can be used to analyze stress, strain, force, displacement and more. In this example we analyze the castor bracket to see how far it will deflect under a heavy load. You can analyze assemblies or parts in Solid Edge, here we will just focus on the key assembly components to give realistic results more quickly.A key aspect in Solid Edge ST4 is the ability to use a combination of mid-surfaces and solid models in the same study. Meshes created with both 2D shell elements and solid elements give results much faster and more complex models can be analyzed. The study here will be a hybrid of both element types and we’ll show how Solid Edge models the interface between the different element types. To help you create more real-world simulations, ‘edge to surface’ gluing is now supported. This allows edges of shell model components to be connected directly to faces of other shell or solid components, without the requirement of matching element sizes and node positions. Part to part contact is now much easier to setup with quick face to face connections, and new graphic symbols for ‘source’ and ‘target’ faces make them easier to recognize. 1:28 - Run the mesh and show new optionsSold Edge Simulation uses our industry standard NASTRAN solver to get fast and accurate results. In ST4 you now have more control over the quality of mesh for optimizing speed and accuracy around complex geometry. For example you can control the minimum elements on an edge, ensuring small edges are represented by an adequate number of elements in the final mesh. To optimize complex models a ‘maximum angle tolerance’ limits the angle between facets on curved surfaces while curvature based options automatically increase mesh refinement on tightly curved faces to help ensure higher accuracy without sacrificing overall solve performance. Also, ‘Quad Edge Layers’ forces placement of quadrilateral elements around stress raisers such as holes. This new feature is yet another way Solid Edge Simulation helps optimize solve speed and accuracy.1:39 - Run the solve and view resultsResults are now easier to interpret, for example the color bar has improved numerical formatting so the best format for each number is automatically chosen to make it much easier to understand. In this example, the results show that the ‘wheel bracket’ will deflect too much so some edits to strengthen the part are needed.2:12 - IPA into sheet metal partThe unique integrated design environment in Solid Edge let’s you make modifications fast using synchronous while ordered features such as the mid-surface are kept up to date. Using synchronous technology, we’ll make the sides of the castor bracket parallel and fix the leading radius size with the drag of a mouse. For thickening the sheet metal bracket, you can easily change the thickness value from tool bar. This handy overrider makes it easier to try out different ‘what if’ scenarios.Synchronous technology lets you make precise changes, by using 3D driving dimensions, key point snapping, or by entering offset values as shown here.Because the mid-surfaces are ordered features, they are kept up to date automatically during any synchronous edit. , After the edit, a quick re-solving let’s displays the new results. The combination of changing the material thickness and shortening the limbs on the castor bracket gives an acceptable design. The deflection seen under maximum load is now within design parameters. The results can be saved as an AVI to animate your results, and it’s possible to generate reports in common formats such as HTML or Microsoft word. ConclusionWith these new mid-surface capabilities and meshing options, design analysis is optimized for fast accurate results, even with complex designs, so you can try out more design alternatives while reducing physical prototypes.

NOTE TO FIELD MARKETING: REPLACE THIS CASE STUDY AS NEEDED WITH A LOCAL ONE. MAKE SURE THE SELECTED CASE STUDY IS BASED ON SIMULATION AND DRAWS OUT SOME TANGIBLE BENEFITS Before we close out this topic, let’s hear from one of our customers Modern MechanicalFabThis company custom designs products for many customers across many industries. This certified women-owned business in custom design, needed to produce better products faster and at a lower cost. Getting high quality products often required outsourcing professional engineering services adding to costs and delays. They turned to Solid Edge Simulation and reduced engineering services by 50%.
The last area for us to cover in Solid Edge ST4, is how we continue to define world-class drafting. Solid edge has always placed a strong focus on supporting industries standards while providing capabilities for drawing customization. This combination helps ensure your drawings comply with industry standards, yet let’s address specific customer needs. We recognize that drawings are the key deliverable for many design engineers and we continue to show leadership in helping reduce documentation costs.
Solid Edge ST4 continues to define world-class drafting starting with improved drawing view creation and control. We have provided control over drawing view captions so caption text can be multi-line and include model properties such as part numbers. Captions can be sorted and you can establish a specific naming convention to adhere to company or customer standards.Broken views have also been enhanced where you can show breaksas curved lines and break lines now only show on geometry, not in empty spaces. To simplify the process of creating broken views, the view automatically created at the commands finish step.We also have the option to omit ribs from section views as complies with most drawings standards.
We've also made many enhancements for tables such as parts lists, hole tables, and bend sequence tables.Squeezing large amounts of text in narrow cells can be done automatically by modify the aspect ratio (or character kerning) that shrinks the text. You can now merge cells of common data to improve the visual communication of table contents. For example, column headers can be merged to better categorize data such as physical properties, and rows can get merged for cells with similar values.Within tables text to be rotated, you can allow user defined rows, and you can override cells. Text attributes within each cell can be changed to show data in bold, italics, and underlining.
Solid edge ST4 also includes many enhancements around annotations. Text boxes now support fraction stacking, where as you type enter one divided by two, the created text converts this to an actual ½ symbol with control over how it’s displayed. Subscript, superscript for adding symbols such as the TM for trademark are supported and lines can be bulleted and numbered.Faster systems can get annotated faster with automatic balloon stacking, so with a single click, the entire stack of parts are called out individually.More control over callouts is also supported. The same aspect control used in text boxes is also available in callouts, and wrapping more border control name just a few of the new hat enhancements. When placing feature control frames we can attach them to parallel or some old prefix suffix a new symbols.
We have also answered many of your requests around customizing dimensions. Dimension lines can now be jogged to better show dimensions across narrow faces. And additional JIS weld symbols are being delivered.Once you have one dimension with the appropriate characteristics such as tolerances, prefixes, or suffixes, those can quickly be copied using a new dimension copy tool. You simply click the first to mention that you want to copy the attributes to any subsequent dimensions.
DO NOT SHOW THIS SLIDE TO PRESS/ANALYSTS/MEDIA—IT’S INTENDED FOR CUSTOMERS ONLYAs with all solid edge release a strong focus is placed on increasing usability, here are just a few enhancements.Users now have the ability to derive the sheet scale from the first place view and an option to link the sheet scale to the view scale, any changes to the drawing view scale and the sheet scale updates accordingly. We've also added options to “fix” the position of drawing views, and undo support for any deleted views and tables. To get a better visual appearance during drawing development, view contents are now fully displayed when moving them on a sheet. Before you print drawing sheets, a new preview lets you see exactly what the sheets look like before committing the print. Finally, we’ve completely overhauled the user interface for inserting special symbols in two text boxes callout’s and other annotations.
Let’s see a demonstration on some of the new capabilities that showcasesolid edge’s world-class drafting.Filename:06_WorldClassDraftingWorld-class DraftingWe recognize drawings are a key deliverable for most engineers and our goals since Solid Edge Version 1 are to reduce drawing production time. One unique way in which solid edge speeds creation is with ‘Quick Sheet’ templates. Place holders for critical items such as drawing views and parts lists are automatically created per industry or company standards.Parts lists and tables:The quick-sheet template automatically placed the views, placed item balloons on the parts and completed the parts list, saving time while adhering to company standards. Additional drawing views are quickly created using drag-and-drop techniques and 2D drawing dimensions can be automatically retrieved from the 3D model if required.Automatic balloon stacking for fastener systems allows you to annotate fast, calling out each individual part with a single click. To make tables such as parts lists easier to read, you can now add table headings, merge cells, and control cell formatting. We’ll start by adding a title to our parts list. You can also merge column headers to better categorize data such as physical properties, or merge cells with similar values. Text within a cell can be rotated to save space and actual cell values can be overridden for making any last minute changes. When long text needs to fit in a tight space, a new option automatically adjusts the spacing between characters forcing an exact fit. 2:05 Improved drawing view annotationAnother way Solid Edge continues to define world-class drafting is with improved drawing view caption control. Drawing view captions can now be multi-line, include model properties such as part numbers, specify the letters to be used for auto-naming and order they appear. This caption naming convention can created per company standards and be stored for future use.2.31 2D drawing performanceIn Solid Edge, 2D drawings are automatically created from the 3D model, so views are always correct and dimensions are accurate throughout the entire design process.3:41 More and more and more… (Dimensions)Dimensions can be repositioned, reformatted, and customized. For example, adding tolerance values or special notes in the prefix or suffix location is simple to set. You can always create a custom dimension style with these characteristics, or simply copy these attributes to other dimensions using a new copy tool. With a single mouse-click, witness lines can be joggled to better show dimensions across narrow faces, yet are easy to reset if you change your mind. Drawing views can be locked preventing an accidental move, but if repositioning is allowed, drawing view contents are visible during a drag.4:50 Improved drawing view creation and controlSolid Edge drawings are compliant with industry standards but you have complete control over drawing view, dimensions and annotations characteristics to accomodate specific company or customer needs. For example you can turn hatching on or off for sectioned rib-features, and cutting planes can now be lines or curves. 5:38 Automated annotations:To save time and maintain drawing consistency, standard company notes can be saved and reused by dragging and dropping them from a library onto your drawings. Enhancements to annotations include text boxes that support fraction stacking for imperial dimensions as well more formatting options such as bullets and numbers, aspect ratio, text wrapping and boarder controls. There’s also support for subscripts and superscripts for adding symbols such as degree, counterbore and countersink.6:60 edit wheelTo help control your revision process, changes to drawings initiate in 3D. Simply double click any view to display the associated model. Synchronous technology lets you make rapid design changes without having to know the models history so precise edits can be made faster and with greater flexibility. Back on the drawing, Solid Edge automatically marks any changes while a handy drawing view tracker highlights each modification. You’ll never have to guess at what’s changed again!7:44 Strong focus on usability:As with all solid edge releases, a strong focus is placed on increasing usability, a few enhancements include the ability to derive sheet scale from drawing views, link sheet scale to view scale and print previews. Conclusion:We recognize that drawings are the key deliverable for many design engineers and we continue to show leadership in helping reduce documentation costs.

NOTE TO FIELD MARKETING: REPLACE THIS CASE STUDY AS NEEDED WITH A LOCAL ONE. MAKE SURE THE SELECTED CASE STUDY IS BASED ON SIMULATION AND DRAWS OUT SOME TANGIBLE BENEFITS Let’s take a look at a solid edge customer that uses synchronous technology to edit imported parts. A-1 needed to accelerate their order entry process and using solid edge with synchronous technology, part changes were reduced by 66%. That savings translated into more time to invest in winning new business.Jim Saugestad, and engineer at A-1 finds making changes in two minutes versus four hours in solid Edge than a history based system, that’s over 100 times faster. That’s because traditional 3D CAD can’t edit imported models and requires a complete redraw but solid edge can.
