sites.

Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 Products is Now Available for Download
Service Pack 1 includes stability, performance, and security enhancements that are a direct result of
            your feedback.
            IMPORTANT NOTE
It is strongly recommended to install the June 2011 Cumulative Update immediately after the
installation of Service Pack 1. The June Cumulative Update includes several important security and
bug fixes that are not included Service Pack 1.
            Installing Service Pack 1
Prior to installing Service Pack 1 you should carefully read the known issues and release notes at
            http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2532126

Service Pack 1 includes all fixes released through April 2011 so it can be installed directly to RTM
builds of SharePoint 2010 Products, or any prior Cumulative Update.
Install the service packs in the following order on every server in the farm.
                      1. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010
                      2. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack (if applicable)
                      3. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Server 2010
                      4. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Server 2010 Language Pack (if applicable)
The SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard or "psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait”
should be run once on every server in the farm following the final update installed.
The version of content databases will be 14.0.6029.1000 after successfully installation. For more in-
depth guidance for the update process, we recommend reviewing the following articles. These
articles provide a correct way to deploy updates and identify known issues (and resolutions).

            Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I install Service Pack 1 on RTM builds of SharePoint 2010 Products?
A: Yes, Service Pack 1 can be installed directly on RTM builds; however, we suggest you install Service
Pack 1 then apply the June 2011 Cumulative Update.
Q: Do I need to run psconfig after the install of every package?
A: No, apply all of the available packages then run psconfig - the database will only be updated once,
            to the newest version.
Q: Do I need to run psconfig on every machine in the farm?
A: Yes. Although database is already updated, the binaries on each server need to be set and
            permissioned using psconfig.
Q: Will there be a slipstream build including Service Pack 1 available for download?
A: At this time a slipstream build including Service Pack 1 is not available.

 RE: Installation order
We recommend installing the SharePoint Foundation 2010 package followed by the SharePoint Server 2010
package to ensure all files associated with SharePoint 2010 Products are properly updated. See also

     COMMONPROGRAMFILES%Microsoft Sharedweb server extensions14bin, puis

     psconfig.exe -cmd <command> [optional parameters]

     psconfig.exe -help <command name>

suivante :

Copier le code
psconfig.exe -cmd configdb <parameters>
-cmd helpcollections <parameters>
-cmd secureresources <parameters>
-cmd services <parameters>
-cmd installfeatures <parameters>
-cmd adminvs <parameters>
-cmd evalprovision <parameters>
-cmd applicationcontent <parameters>

        Exemple
psconfig.exe -cmd evalprovision -provision -port 1100
helpcol Gère les collections d’aide. Prend le paramètre obligatoire suivant :
lection -installall
s Installe toutes les collections d’aide disponibles.
        Exemple
        psconfig.exe -cmd helpcollections -installall

                                     KB Page 11
batterie de serveurs.
        Exemple
        psconfig.exe -cmd installfeatures
        extensions14LOGS.
        Exemple
        psconfig.exe -cmd quiet
        Exemple
        psconfig.exe -cmd secureresources
service Gère les services des Produits SharePoint 2010. Prend les paramètres
s facultatifs suivants :
        [-install]
autonome monoserveur. N’utilisez pas ce paramètre pour une
        installation de batterie de serveurs.
        Exemple
        psconfig.exe -cmd services -install
        psconfig.exe -cmd services -provision
d’installation), puis psconfig.exe -setup.
        Exemple
        psconfig.exe -cmd setup
onecon SharePoint. Prend les paramètres facultatifs suivants :
fig [-lcid <1033>]

                                     KB Page 12
fig [-lcid <1033>]
          Exemple
          psconfig.exe -cmd standaloneconfig
       Exemple
       Copier le code
psconfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace v2v -wait

SharePoint 2010 SP1 and the June Cumulative Update for
  SharePoint 2010

Yesterday Service Pack 1 (SP1) for SharePoint 2010 was made available. SP1 contains a number
of important fixes that improve the SharePoint experience for our customers. With the
recommendation to install SP1 for SharePoint came a recommendation to ALSO deploy the
June Cumulative Update (CU) for SharePoint simultaneously.
It’s worth explaining this recommendation in detail and answering some common questions
about how / why we made this recommendation.
First, to explain the difference between SP1 and the June CU.
• SharePoint 2010 SP1 contains all SharePoint updates published through the April 2011
Cumulative Update in addition to other fixes that were applied specifically to SP1 during its
development. SP1 is a baseline, and that baseline is tied to our Service Pack Life Cycle Policy.
We recommend applying SP1 to your SharePoint environment because it resets the baseline
for your entire SharePoint environment, and prepares your environment for future releases
  such as the June CU.
• The June Cumulative Update is the first Post-SP1 build released to customers. It contains new
fixes to issues raised through various escalation channels and through our support
organization. The June CU is based on Service Pack 1, but it adds new updates to some of (not
all) the packages that SP1 installs.
The recommended approach is to apply Service Pack 1 and the June CU into an environment
together. Because the packages changed by the June CU supersede SP1, the order of
installation isn’t critical. If you install the CU before SP1, the packages that the CU updated
won’t be overwritten by SP1. Because the June CU is from a later build than SP1, many will be
comfortable installing SP1 first, and then applying the CU.
A separate topic of conversation is the order in which you should apply SharePoint Foundation
vs. SharePoint Server Updates. Per the guidance from the SharePoint team, when applying SP1
or the CU it is recommended to apply the Foundation packages before applying the server
  packages.
The recommended order of installation is as follows:
  Update Foundation first:
SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1
Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack
June 2011 CU for SharePoint Foundation 2010
  Then SharePoint Server:
SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1
Service Pack 1 for Server Language Pack 2010
June 2011 CU for SharePoint Server 2010
You can then run the Configuration Wizard (PSConfig) one time on all boxes.

So What the Fuss? - Service Pack 1 and June 2011 CU for

So What the Fuss? - Service Pack 1 and June 2011 CU for SharePoint 2010

As I’m sure you are all aware, a couple of days ago Microsoft released Service Pack
1 (SP1) for SharePoint 2010. On the same day the bi-monthly Cumulative Update
(CU) – the June 2011 CU - was released. Service Pack 1 of course has been hotly
anticipated both by the community and customers alike. Unfortunately these
releases have caused mass confusion and much contradictory advice regarding the
packages and their installation.
This post is simply an attempt to reduce the amount of questions I receive about
this topic, or rather have something I can point people to when they ask. Now of
course, I don’t work for the SharePoint product group, so none of this is “official”.
If you want that then I recommend you head on over to the Office Sustained
Engineering Team blog post, which is the best official resource right now. There
are of course other Microsoft places where certain recommendations and so forth
are made.
In this post I will answer the most common questions from the point of view of the
field. I have the luxury of being able to call it as I see it, for real based on
customer deployments, not how it “should” be. I’m sure there are other questions
that I don’t answer here, but these again are the most common ones over the last
couple of days.

Q: Got any advice for me?
A: First and foremost, step away from the keyboard!
Seriously, updates are a major lifecycle event in the farm. You should be properly
planning for and testing any updates. This should be part of the operational service
management approach for your SharePoint deployment. Period. If you are hacking
around on a single box VM of course things are different, but the more you know,
the more you know! If you deploy an update and it breaks something that’s bad,
but if you didn’t test it first, that’s pretty much no one’s fault but your own.

Q: If I am running SharePoint Server 2010 (SPS), do I need to install both
the SharePoint Foundation (SPF) and SharePoint Server updates?
A: There are separate downloads for SPF and SPS. This is true for all the CUs and
the SP. TechNet and the SharePoint Team Blog recommend you install both the
SPF package and then the SPS package.
For quite a long time after the RTM of SharePoint 2010 a big fuss was made of the
new style of packaging. The main thing being that you only needed to install the
SPS package, which contains the SPF bits. A good attempt to make what is known
as “uber packages” which streamline the installation experience for customers.
A few months ago however the guidance was changed to say “the best practice is
to install both”. This is not a copy and paste error from how it used to be with

                                               KB Page 19
to install both”. This is not a copy and paste error from how it used to be with
SharePoint 2007. It was changed for a reason.
In principle you can get away with just installing the SPS package. This is how it
should work. You may have been doing this for previous CUs with no problems at
all, many have including myself on my private VM environments.
HOWEVER, there are cases where this may not work properly. There have been
numerous issues with this approach. And this is why the recommendation is to
install both before running PSConfig. It’s a “safest” bet. I’m not a fan of the term
best practice, but the recommendation is to do both to avoid potential issues. I
agree with that recommendation based upon my experience patching customer
farms.
If you are comfortable simply installing the SPS package, and you don’t have any
problems then great. If you hit issues, don’t moan that the SharePoint PG or the
likes of me didn’t warn you!
There is of course the argument that this is a complete waste of time. Well couple
points here. Firstly, that’s the how it should be. Not the how it is. Secondly, this
is only valid if you can be sure it works, 100% of the time. And thirdly, the
installation of the bits is the least of your time concerns when patching a large
deployment. Seriously, the time it takes is minimal, it’s the time it takes to run
PSConfig you should be worried about, or the time it takes to run Content DB
updates in a staggered fashion for real deployments. Saving a few minutes
installing binaries really is not a consideration in the real world. You’ve likely got
multiple packages anyway (Language Packs, OWA). So again, this is just small fry.
Again the SPS package includes the SPF bits, that is not the issue here, the issue is
the application of those bits. Have I patched farms with the uber packages
successfully? Yes. But I've also been in the situation where it didn’t work…
I know some very clever and knowledgeable people disagree here, but I’ve hit
problems with customer farms where it simply doesn’t work. So until I am sure the
so called “uber” packages work, every time, I am standing behind the
recommendation from the product group.
Could this guidance change again in the future? Sure. No one would be happier
than me to see “uber” packages become the reality.

Q: Does the June 2011 CU include the SP?
A: No. It does not. If you install the June 2011 CU on RTM you will have different
bits than if you install SP1 and then the June CU. Any statement you see that says
“the June 2011 CU includes all updates in SP1” is just wrong.
SP1 is everything up to and including the April 2011 CU plus some other bits and
bobs (the new features and Windows PowerShell cmdlets).
The June 2011 CU contains updates to some SP1 bits.
The packaging of updates for SharePoint is ingenious and very smart, but with that
comes some complexity.

Q: Can I deploy the June 2011 CU and not the SP?
A: Yes, but you probably shouldn’t. SP1 is effectively the new baseline build in line
with Microsoft’s service pack lifecycle. It all depends upon your scenario. You can
later install SP1 and it’s smart enough to know which bits to update and which not
to. Bear in mind again, that the June 2011 CU contains updates to some SP1 bits.

Q: Why are the CU packages so much bigger than the SP packages?
A: Because CU packages contain all languages, whereas the SP packages are
single language installers.

                                         KB Page 20
Q: A Microsoft blog says to install the CU at the same time or immediately
after the SP, should I?
A: The answer is NO. No, no, no!
This is frankly untenable advice. You should only deploy the CU if you are affected
by an issue it fixes or are instructed to by a Microsoft engineer.
Remember that CUs are a collection of hotfixes. Service Packs on the other hand
are much more broadly tested. Any update is major lifecycle event in the farm
and should be thoroughly tested before deployment into production (and I know
you all do that right? :)).
Applying a CU just to be “up to date” is madness. Again, unless you need a fix that
is in the package, don’t deploy. At least not immediately upon release. There are
some of us who have to do this for certain scenarios sure, but your customers
farms are not among them!
Remember the October 2010 CU? That had regressions and was pulled and re-
released later. Remember the December 2010 CU? That had regressions that
broke stuff and we had to wait for the February 2011 CU to fix it. I think you see
my point.
You can have much more confidence in the Service Pack as it is a Service Pack. the
packaging mechanism might be the same, but CUs and SPs are very different
beasts. Regardless I cannot stress enough the importance of appropriate planning
and testing for updates of any kind. You should be doing this. Remember, it’s not
about build envy, and having the most up to date farm!

Q: OK, so what order should I install the stuff?
A: Because of the way the packages are engineered the order isn’t actually
important, but it makes sense to apply them in a logical order. For no other reason
than it keeps things simple, especially when working with large farms. I approach
the installation like this:
   1. SPF SP1
   2. SPF language packs SP1 (as needed)
   3. SPS SP1
   4. SPS language packs SP1 (as needed)
   5. OWA SP1 (as needed)
If it asks you to reboot, reboot once after the installs, not each time it asks. Then
of course you run PSConfig on each server in the farm.
As for the June CU, you could include that if you like living dangerously. Or you can
wait a while to see what shakes loose over the next few weeks!

Q: Why is it all so damn complicated?
A: SharePoint Server is a complex beast. Suck it up. The sustained engineering
folks are doing a fantastic job pulling this off. If you think you can do a better job
of delivering updates for a product this size, used by so many, in a gazillion
languages, you could prove it over here.

10 Best Practices and Recommendations for SharePoint 2010 SP1 and June 2011 CU
Yeah! Sp1 is live! Wondering why people are excited other than the fact that there are a
lot of fixes? I posted a while back on 10 Reasons Why SharePoint SP1 will rock your world.
Now that we’ve gotten over the fact that it’s live. I have a few warnings based on
experience and based on reading a few people’s experience thus far….
 I don’t want this to be you…
“Crappy SP1. Beware. In our environment Project Server SP1 broke the database
connection string in registry and SharePoint Server SP1 stopped all application pools.”
 1. First make sure you test first! Did you get the right package or set of packages you’re
 testing?
 2. Make sure you aren’t just installing SharePoint Server SP1, many make the mistake of
trying to install just the server bits without first installing SharePoint Foundation SP1. A lot
of people have different versions of SharePoint. Are you running Foundation? Do you
have Project Server? Is TFS or something else on your box? My recommendation is to
ensure that anything you have on top of SharePoint has been tested as well. Some may
have their own requirements for SP1. Project Server is a classic example. Have you
noticed that both SharePoint and Project Server have been recommending not only
applying SP1, but also the June cumulative update? While I usually recommend the
conservative route of wait and see and be one month behind. You already are. You’re
already jumping through these hoops, you may want to have this June CU as something
you’re validating at the same time.
 3. PSConfig must be run on every server after the fact… “psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace
b2b -wait” should be run once on every server in the farm following the final update
installed. There are some exceptions to this.
 4. Is there a way to do highly available patching? Yes! Remember how you could set your
dbs read only? There are some serious patching features the product team built to allow
you to first apply the binaries while your content dbs are read only, then apply the patches
to your content dbs. You can track the whole thing in central admin.
 5. With the site recycle bin, I would suggest you learn this new and cool feature. Learn
how it works. Test it out. There are some decisions to be made.
 6. Browser support matrix (for SP1) - Before you go out and say, Hey we support Chrome
now. Make sure you’ve done some of your own testing, especially on any publishing
scenarios. It’s not tier 1, it’s a tier 2 browser. So while it may be great for what most users
are doing, you still may recommend that your authors for publishing sites use IE or Firefox.
 7. If you have any problems at all with SP1, you can find a lot of troubleshooting around
patching both in 2007 technet content as well as 2010. Installing a patch while it may
sound easy is not trivial. I bet you could easily find 10-20 page installation guides.
 8. Looking for info on which server to start with? Many will start with the central admin
server. If you’ve set your content dbs read only, it doesn’t matter which server you start
with. If you’re not planning on setting your content dbs read only, then make sure you
don’t have any users connected while you’re upgrading. I do like the strategy of making
sure all servers are installed with the service pack prior to the reboots. Basically you’ve
already run SP1 on all boxes, then they all get rebooted and then you run the psconfig –
cmd upgrade –inplace b2b –wait remember you can use –force if you have any issues with
that command. As well, you can go into central admin and verify the versions on all of

                                               KB Page 32
that command. As well, you can go into central admin and verify the versions on all of
your content databases as well you can even see the upgrade progress. It’s especially
handy if you decide to go with the read-only option.
Sustained engineering has laid out these recommendations for which order to go:
Update Foundation first:
SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1
Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack
June 2011 CU for SharePoint Foundation 2010
Then SharePoint Server:
SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1
Service Pack 1 for Server Language Pack 2010
June 2011 CU for SharePoint Server 2010
Joel: Then your Project Sp1 or TFS or whatever add-on upgrades. Some Vendor tools may
even have post SP1 updates.
You can then run the Configuration Wizard (PSConfig) one time on all boxes.
9. Never assume that Microsoft has done enough testing, and your environment is clean
enough that it should be an easy install. Service packs are a big deal, and the worst case
scenario is that you are cobbled. At least in 2010 you now have a lot better ways of telling
what’s up with your databases and you can even watch which databases are running which
versions of which patches in central admin upgrade status. Look for 14.0.6029.1000 after
SharePoint Server 2010 SP1 or 14.0.6106.5000 for June 2011 CU. Service packs aren’t
trivial.
10. Language – While most environments are English, there are many others, and some
have multiple language packs. Service packs are the best time to sync up and ensure all
language packs are installed and updated at the same time. As well, you’ll find Microsoft
has a staggered approach to releasing updates for the language packs and not all SP1s are
available for all languages across the entire stack. You do definitely want to make sure
you’re tracking down the entire SP1 stack for your farm.
11. Service Apps – Most people will have one production farm, but those with multiple
where search or profiles is in another farm will question which farm is first. The simple
answer is don’t assume that Microsoft is testing your service app scenario. They have tried
to make it so it doesn’t matter if parent or child is first. Search is one of those things
where once it is patched you should have it go out and update, and not wait for the next
scheduled event. An SP1 farm can obviously index a RTM farm, and the reverse? Yes, it
should work, but best case it’s all SP1.
12. The most common mistakes are not running psconfig, not reading the known issues,
just installing one, not installing correctly across all servers, NOT testing, assuming your
patched, and you’re only binary patched (it does need to do both binaries and the
databases) and often the databases don’t update until after psconfig is ran.) Multi tennant
environments with those multi tennant features are most likely to have challenges with
this. Many will only install one SP1 and forget the others, make sure you’ve tracked them
ALL down including languages, Project, Office Web Apps, SharePoint Server, TFS. Anything
that was a separate install during your initial install process should have a patch and or
recommendations. Best case is they are all updated around the same time. In referring to
the stack of SharePoint Products and their partners such as Project and Fast and so on
here’s the page to track SP1 resources:
The Office and SharePoint Update Center tracks all updates to all supported versions of:
     • Project Server
     • Office Web Apps
     • Search Server
     • SharePoint Foundation and Windows SharePoint Services
     • FAST Search Server for SharePoint
13. Read… Read as much as you can before you install. The office sustained engineering
team which really is the core team that’s doing the SP1 release has released a post
explaining why the June CU recommendation. I think it’s more than a consideration. It’s
coming across as DO IT.
From the SharePoint Team blog:
“Prior to installing Service Pack 1 you should carefully read the known issues and release

                                            KB Page 33
“Prior to installing Service Pack 1 you should carefully read the known issues and release
notes at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2532126
Service Pack 1 includes all fixes released through April 2011 so it can be installed directly to
RTM builds of SharePoint 2010 Products, or any prior Cumulative Update.“
From Office Sustained Engineering blog on SP1:
“First, to explain the difference between SP1 and the June CU.
      • SharePoint 2010 SP1 contains all SharePoint updates published through the April
2011 Cumulative Update in addition to other fixes that were applied specifically to
SP1 during its development. SP1 is a baseline, and that baseline is tied to our Service
Pack Life Cycle Policy. We recommend applying SP1 to your SharePoint environment
because it resets the baseline for your entire SharePoint environment, and prepares
your environment for future releases such as the June CU.
      • The June Cumulative Update is the first Post-SP1 build released to customers. It
contains new fixes to issues raised through various escalation channels and through
our support organization. The June CU is based on Service Pack 1, but it adds new
updates to some of (not all) the packages that SP1 installs.
The recommended approach is to apply Service Pack 1 and the June CU into an
environment together.”

Project Server which simplifies patching of this common installation. It is great to
see the project team working together with the SharePoint team. Also shows that
project is actually testing with SharePoint SP1 bits.

Service Pack 1 - Site Recycle Bin
Service Pack 1 introduces long awaited Site Recycle Bin functionality that enables self-service
recovery of site collections and sites. In the past IT Professionals were tasked with restoring entire
databases to recover deleted site collections and sites and would generally require expensive
restore environments to support the task. Now in Service Pack 1 administrators can quickly and
easily recover site collections and sites accidentally deleted by their owners in a process similar to
that of the Recycle Bin we have for Lists, Libraries, and Documents.
The Site Recycle Bin leverages Gradual Site Delete through implementing a delay between Gradual
Site Delete and permanent deletion of the deleted Site Collection.
User Interface
Users are presented with new text when deleting Sites instructing users that all site content will be
sent to the site collection Recycle Bin (see Figure 1 Deleting
http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam).
Figure 1 Deleting http://sharepoint.contoso.com/customers/Fabrikam

Site Restore
Site Collection administrators can restore deleted Sites in the same manner through which Items,
Lists, and Libraries are restored through the Recycle Bin; however, the size of the Site is not reported
through the user interface which differs from content to include Items, Lists, and Libraries. To
restore a Site, the Site Collection administrator selects the checkbox next to the Site to be restored
and selects Restore Selection (see Figure 2 Restoring
http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam).
Figure 2 Restoring http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam

Figure 2 Restoring http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam

  NOTE
In the event the Site has been recreated using the same Url, the Site must first be renamed or
deleted for the restore to succeed; however, when restoring My Site personal sites, any newly
created My Site personal site using the same Url as the Site to be restored is overwritten.
The Site Recycle Bin in SharePoint 2010 leverages the retention policies specified at the Web
application level for the Recycle Bin in SharePoint 2010.
  Object Model
SPWebApplication.GetDeletedSites(Url) returns a SPDeletedSitesCollection that contains all
  SPDeletedSites with the specified Url.
  SPDeletedSiteCollection
SPDeletedSiteCollection represents a collection of SPDeleteSite objects or Site Collections that are
associated with a particular Web application, including a top-level Web site and all its sub-sites.
  SPDeletedSite
SPDeletedSite represents a collection of deleted sites in a Web application, including a top-level Web
  site and all its subsites.
  SPDeletedSite Properties
SiteId returns the Site Id (GUID) associated with the specified SPDeletedSite.
Url returns the Url associated with the specified SPDeletedSite.
ContentDatabaseId returns the Id of the Content Database associated with the deleted Site.
Restore restores the deleted site collection.

us/sharepoint/ff800847).

   • Support for SQL Server Code Name “Denali”
   • Shallow copy functionality
   • Site-level recycle bin
   • Improvements to storage management (StorMan.aspx)
   • Cascading filters for Performance Point services
   • Additional browser support

SharePoint 2010 SP1
Introduction

                                       SharePoint Server 2010 correspond toujours

• 3. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 Products is Now Available for Download samedi 2 juillet 2011 08:03 Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog SharePoint Home | RSS The official blog of the Microsoft SharePoint Product Group 2011 June Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 Products is 28 Now Available for Download by sharepointblog@live.com on 6/28/2011 7:02 AM Category: SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 Products is Now Available for Download Service Pack 1 includes stability, performance, and security enhancements that are a direct result of your feedback. IMPORTANT NOTE It is strongly recommended to install the June 2011 Cumulative Update immediately after the installation of Service Pack 1. The June Cumulative Update includes several important security and bug fixes that are not included Service Pack 1. Installing Service Pack 1 Prior to installing Service Pack 1 you should carefully read the known issues and release notes at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2532126 Service Pack 1 includes all fixes released through April 2011 so it can be installed directly to RTM builds of SharePoint 2010 Products, or any prior Cumulative Update. Install the service packs in the following order on every server in the farm. 1. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 2. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack (if applicable) 3. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Server 2010 4. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Server 2010 Language Pack (if applicable) The SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard or "psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” should be run once on every server in the farm following the final update installed. The version of content databases will be 14.0.6029.1000 after successfully installation. For more in- depth guidance for the update process, we recommend reviewing the following articles. These articles provide a correct way to deploy updates and identify known issues (and resolutions). Prepare to deploy a software update for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Install a software update for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Prepare to deploy a software update for SharePoint Server 2010 Install a software update for SharePoint Server 2010 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I install Service Pack 1 on RTM builds of SharePoint 2010 Products? A: Yes, Service Pack 1 can be installed directly on RTM builds; however, we suggest you install Service Pack 1 then apply the June 2011 Cumulative Update. Q: Do I need to run psconfig after the install of every package? A: No, apply all of the available packages then run psconfig - the database will only be updated once, to the newest version. Q: Do I need to run psconfig on every machine in the farm? A: Yes. Although database is already updated, the binaries on each server need to be set and permissioned using psconfig. Q: Will there be a slipstream build including Service Pack 1 available for download? A: At this time a slipstream build including Service Pack 1 is not available. Additional Resources To learn about what’s new in Service Pack 1 read the Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010 whitepaper. • 8.
• 17. SharePoint 2010 SP1 and the June Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 - Office Sustained Engineering - Site Home - TechNet Blogs vendredi 1 juillet 2011 07:56 SharePoint 2010 SP1 and the June Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 The Microsoft Office Sustained Engineering Team 29 Jun 2011 3:35 PM • Comments 3 Yesterday Service Pack 1 (SP1) for SharePoint 2010 was made available. SP1 contains a number of important fixes that improve the SharePoint experience for our customers. With the recommendation to install SP1 for SharePoint came a recommendation to ALSO deploy the June Cumulative Update (CU) for SharePoint simultaneously. It’s worth explaining this recommendation in detail and answering some common questions about how / why we made this recommendation. First, to explain the difference between SP1 and the June CU. • SharePoint 2010 SP1 contains all SharePoint updates published through the April 2011 Cumulative Update in addition to other fixes that were applied specifically to SP1 during its development. SP1 is a baseline, and that baseline is tied to our Service Pack Life Cycle Policy. We recommend applying SP1 to your SharePoint environment because it resets the baseline for your entire SharePoint environment, and prepares your environment for future releases such as the June CU. • The June Cumulative Update is the first Post-SP1 build released to customers. It contains new fixes to issues raised through various escalation channels and through our support organization. The June CU is based on Service Pack 1, but it adds new updates to some of (not all) the packages that SP1 installs. The recommended approach is to apply Service Pack 1 and the June CU into an environment together. Because the packages changed by the June CU supersede SP1, the order of installation isn’t critical. If you install the CU before SP1, the packages that the CU updated won’t be overwritten by SP1. Because the June CU is from a later build than SP1, many will be comfortable installing SP1 first, and then applying the CU. A separate topic of conversation is the order in which you should apply SharePoint Foundation vs. SharePoint Server Updates. Per the guidance from the SharePoint team, when applying SP1 or the CU it is recommended to apply the Foundation packages before applying the server packages. The recommended order of installation is as follows: Update Foundation first: SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1 Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack June 2011 CU for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Then SharePoint Server: SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 Service Pack 1 for Server Language Pack 2010 June 2011 CU for SharePoint Server 2010 You can then run the Configuration Wizard (PSConfig) one time on all boxes. • 19. So What the Fuss? - Service Pack 1 and June 2011 CU for SharePoint 2010 vendredi 1 juillet 2011 07:57 So What the Fuss? - Service Pack 1 and June 2011 CU for SharePoint 2010 As I’m sure you are all aware, a couple of days ago Microsoft released Service Pack 1 (SP1) for SharePoint 2010. On the same day the bi-monthly Cumulative Update (CU) – the June 2011 CU - was released. Service Pack 1 of course has been hotly anticipated both by the community and customers alike. Unfortunately these releases have caused mass confusion and much contradictory advice regarding the packages and their installation. This post is simply an attempt to reduce the amount of questions I receive about this topic, or rather have something I can point people to when they ask. Now of course, I don’t work for the SharePoint product group, so none of this is “official”. If you want that then I recommend you head on over to the Office Sustained Engineering Team blog post, which is the best official resource right now. There are of course other Microsoft places where certain recommendations and so forth are made. In this post I will answer the most common questions from the point of view of the field. I have the luxury of being able to call it as I see it, for real based on customer deployments, not how it “should” be. I’m sure there are other questions that I don’t answer here, but these again are the most common ones over the last couple of days. Q: Got any advice for me? A: First and foremost, step away from the keyboard! Seriously, updates are a major lifecycle event in the farm. You should be properly planning for and testing any updates. This should be part of the operational service management approach for your SharePoint deployment. Period. If you are hacking around on a single box VM of course things are different, but the more you know, the more you know! If you deploy an update and it breaks something that’s bad, but if you didn’t test it first, that’s pretty much no one’s fault but your own. Q: If I am running SharePoint Server 2010 (SPS), do I need to install both the SharePoint Foundation (SPF) and SharePoint Server updates? A: There are separate downloads for SPF and SPS. This is true for all the CUs and the SP. TechNet and the SharePoint Team Blog recommend you install both the SPF package and then the SPS package. For quite a long time after the RTM of SharePoint 2010 a big fuss was made of the new style of packaging. The main thing being that you only needed to install the SPS package, which contains the SPF bits. A good attempt to make what is known as “uber packages” which streamline the installation experience for customers. A few months ago however the guidance was changed to say “the best practice is to install both”. This is not a copy and paste error from how it used to be with KB Page 19
  • 20. to install both”. This is not a copy and paste error from how it used to be with SharePoint 2007. It was changed for a reason. In principle you can get away with just installing the SPS package. This is how it should work. You may have been doing this for previous CUs with no problems at all, many have including myself on my private VM environments. HOWEVER, there are cases where this may not work properly. There have been numerous issues with this approach. And this is why the recommendation is to install both before running PSConfig. It’s a “safest” bet. I’m not a fan of the term best practice, but the recommendation is to do both to avoid potential issues. I agree with that recommendation based upon my experience patching customer farms. If you are comfortable simply installing the SPS package, and you don’t have any problems then great. If you hit issues, don’t moan that the SharePoint PG or the likes of me didn’t warn you! There is of course the argument that this is a complete waste of time. Well couple points here. Firstly, that’s the how it should be. Not the how it is. Secondly, this is only valid if you can be sure it works, 100% of the time. And thirdly, the installation of the bits is the least of your time concerns when patching a large deployment. Seriously, the time it takes is minimal, it’s the time it takes to run PSConfig you should be worried about, or the time it takes to run Content DB updates in a staggered fashion for real deployments. Saving a few minutes installing binaries really is not a consideration in the real world. You’ve likely got multiple packages anyway (Language Packs, OWA). So again, this is just small fry. Again the SPS package includes the SPF bits, that is not the issue here, the issue is the application of those bits. Have I patched farms with the uber packages successfully? Yes. But I've also been in the situation where it didn’t work… I know some very clever and knowledgeable people disagree here, but I’ve hit problems with customer farms where it simply doesn’t work. So until I am sure the so called “uber” packages work, every time, I am standing behind the recommendation from the product group. Could this guidance change again in the future? Sure. No one would be happier than me to see “uber” packages become the reality. Q: Does the June 2011 CU include the SP? A: No. It does not. If you install the June 2011 CU on RTM you will have different bits than if you install SP1 and then the June CU. Any statement you see that says “the June 2011 CU includes all updates in SP1” is just wrong. SP1 is everything up to and including the April 2011 CU plus some other bits and bobs (the new features and Windows PowerShell cmdlets). The June 2011 CU contains updates to some SP1 bits. The packaging of updates for SharePoint is ingenious and very smart, but with that comes some complexity. Q: Can I deploy the June 2011 CU and not the SP? A: Yes, but you probably shouldn’t. SP1 is effectively the new baseline build in line with Microsoft’s service pack lifecycle. It all depends upon your scenario. You can later install SP1 and it’s smart enough to know which bits to update and which not to. Bear in mind again, that the June 2011 CU contains updates to some SP1 bits. Q: Why are the CU packages so much bigger than the SP packages? A: Because CU packages contain all languages, whereas the SP packages are single language installers. KB Page 20
  • 21. Q: A Microsoft blog says to install the CU at the same time or immediately after the SP, should I? A: The answer is NO. No, no, no! This is frankly untenable advice. You should only deploy the CU if you are affected by an issue it fixes or are instructed to by a Microsoft engineer. Remember that CUs are a collection of hotfixes. Service Packs on the other hand are much more broadly tested. Any update is major lifecycle event in the farm and should be thoroughly tested before deployment into production (and I know you all do that right? :)). Applying a CU just to be “up to date” is madness. Again, unless you need a fix that is in the package, don’t deploy. At least not immediately upon release. There are some of us who have to do this for certain scenarios sure, but your customers farms are not among them! Remember the October 2010 CU? That had regressions and was pulled and re- released later. Remember the December 2010 CU? That had regressions that broke stuff and we had to wait for the February 2011 CU to fix it. I think you see my point. You can have much more confidence in the Service Pack as it is a Service Pack. the packaging mechanism might be the same, but CUs and SPs are very different beasts. Regardless I cannot stress enough the importance of appropriate planning and testing for updates of any kind. You should be doing this. Remember, it’s not about build envy, and having the most up to date farm! Q: OK, so what order should I install the stuff? A: Because of the way the packages are engineered the order isn’t actually important, but it makes sense to apply them in a logical order. For no other reason than it keeps things simple, especially when working with large farms. I approach the installation like this: 1. SPF SP1 2. SPF language packs SP1 (as needed) 3. SPS SP1 4. SPS language packs SP1 (as needed) 5. OWA SP1 (as needed) If it asks you to reboot, reboot once after the installs, not each time it asks. Then of course you run PSConfig on each server in the farm. As for the June CU, you could include that if you like living dangerously. Or you can wait a while to see what shakes loose over the next few weeks! Q: Why is it all so damn complicated? A: SharePoint Server is a complex beast. Suck it up. The sustained engineering folks are doing a fantastic job pulling this off. If you think you can do a better job of delivering updates for a product this size, used by so many, in a gazillion languages, you could prove it over here. . • 32. 10 Best Practices and Recommendations for SharePoint 2010 SP1 and June 2011 CU - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land vendredi 1 juillet 2011 17:58 SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land > Posts > 10 Best Practices and Recommendations for SharePoint 2010 SP1 and June 2011 CU 7/1/2011 10 Best Practices and Recommendations for SharePoint 2010 SP1 and June 2011 CU Yeah! Sp1 is live! Wondering why people are excited other than the fact that there are a lot of fixes? I posted a while back on 10 Reasons Why SharePoint SP1 will rock your world. Now that we’ve gotten over the fact that it’s live. I have a few warnings based on experience and based on reading a few people’s experience thus far…. I don’t want this to be you… “Crappy SP1. Beware. In our environment Project Server SP1 broke the database connection string in registry and SharePoint Server SP1 stopped all application pools.” 1. First make sure you test first! Did you get the right package or set of packages you’re testing? 2. Make sure you aren’t just installing SharePoint Server SP1, many make the mistake of trying to install just the server bits without first installing SharePoint Foundation SP1. A lot of people have different versions of SharePoint. Are you running Foundation? Do you have Project Server? Is TFS or something else on your box? My recommendation is to ensure that anything you have on top of SharePoint has been tested as well. Some may have their own requirements for SP1. Project Server is a classic example. Have you noticed that both SharePoint and Project Server have been recommending not only applying SP1, but also the June cumulative update? While I usually recommend the conservative route of wait and see and be one month behind. You already are. You’re already jumping through these hoops, you may want to have this June CU as something you’re validating at the same time. 3. PSConfig must be run on every server after the fact… “psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” should be run once on every server in the farm following the final update installed. There are some exceptions to this. 4. Is there a way to do highly available patching? Yes! Remember how you could set your dbs read only? There are some serious patching features the product team built to allow you to first apply the binaries while your content dbs are read only, then apply the patches to your content dbs. You can track the whole thing in central admin. 5. With the site recycle bin, I would suggest you learn this new and cool feature. Learn how it works. Test it out. There are some decisions to be made. 6. Browser support matrix (for SP1) - Before you go out and say, Hey we support Chrome now. Make sure you’ve done some of your own testing, especially on any publishing scenarios. It’s not tier 1, it’s a tier 2 browser. So while it may be great for what most users are doing, you still may recommend that your authors for publishing sites use IE or Firefox. 7. If you have any problems at all with SP1, you can find a lot of troubleshooting around patching both in 2007 technet content as well as 2010. Installing a patch while it may sound easy is not trivial. I bet you could easily find 10-20 page installation guides. 8. Looking for info on which server to start with? Many will start with the central admin server. If you’ve set your content dbs read only, it doesn’t matter which server you start with. If you’re not planning on setting your content dbs read only, then make sure you don’t have any users connected while you’re upgrading. I do like the strategy of making sure all servers are installed with the service pack prior to the reboots. Basically you’ve already run SP1 on all boxes, then they all get rebooted and then you run the psconfig – cmd upgrade –inplace b2b –wait remember you can use –force if you have any issues with that command. As well, you can go into central admin and verify the versions on all of KB Page 32
  • 33. that command. As well, you can go into central admin and verify the versions on all of your content databases as well you can even see the upgrade progress. It’s especially handy if you decide to go with the read-only option. Sustained engineering has laid out these recommendations for which order to go: Update Foundation first: SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1 Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack June 2011 CU for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Then SharePoint Server: SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 Service Pack 1 for Server Language Pack 2010 June 2011 CU for SharePoint Server 2010 Joel: Then your Project Sp1 or TFS or whatever add-on upgrades. Some Vendor tools may even have post SP1 updates. You can then run the Configuration Wizard (PSConfig) one time on all boxes. 9. Never assume that Microsoft has done enough testing, and your environment is clean enough that it should be an easy install. Service packs are a big deal, and the worst case scenario is that you are cobbled. At least in 2010 you now have a lot better ways of telling what’s up with your databases and you can even watch which databases are running which versions of which patches in central admin upgrade status. Look for 14.0.6029.1000 after SharePoint Server 2010 SP1 or 14.0.6106.5000 for June 2011 CU. Service packs aren’t trivial. 10. Language – While most environments are English, there are many others, and some have multiple language packs. Service packs are the best time to sync up and ensure all language packs are installed and updated at the same time. As well, you’ll find Microsoft has a staggered approach to releasing updates for the language packs and not all SP1s are available for all languages across the entire stack. You do definitely want to make sure you’re tracking down the entire SP1 stack for your farm. 11. Service Apps – Most people will have one production farm, but those with multiple where search or profiles is in another farm will question which farm is first. The simple answer is don’t assume that Microsoft is testing your service app scenario. They have tried to make it so it doesn’t matter if parent or child is first. Search is one of those things where once it is patched you should have it go out and update, and not wait for the next scheduled event. An SP1 farm can obviously index a RTM farm, and the reverse? Yes, it should work, but best case it’s all SP1. 12. The most common mistakes are not running psconfig, not reading the known issues, just installing one, not installing correctly across all servers, NOT testing, assuming your patched, and you’re only binary patched (it does need to do both binaries and the databases) and often the databases don’t update until after psconfig is ran.) Multi tennant environments with those multi tennant features are most likely to have challenges with this. Many will only install one SP1 and forget the others, make sure you’ve tracked them ALL down including languages, Project, Office Web Apps, SharePoint Server, TFS. Anything that was a separate install during your initial install process should have a patch and or recommendations. Best case is they are all updated around the same time. In referring to the stack of SharePoint Products and their partners such as Project and Fast and so on here’s the page to track SP1 resources: The Office and SharePoint Update Center tracks all updates to all supported versions of: • Project Server • Office Web Apps • Search Server • SharePoint Foundation and Windows SharePoint Services • FAST Search Server for SharePoint 13. Read… Read as much as you can before you install. The office sustained engineering team which really is the core team that’s doing the SP1 release has released a post explaining why the June CU recommendation. I think it’s more than a consideration. It’s coming across as DO IT. From the SharePoint Team blog: “Prior to installing Service Pack 1 you should carefully read the known issues and release KB Page 33
  • 34. “Prior to installing Service Pack 1 you should carefully read the known issues and release notes at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2532126 Service Pack 1 includes all fixes released through April 2011 so it can be installed directly to RTM builds of SharePoint 2010 Products, or any prior Cumulative Update.“ From Office Sustained Engineering blog on SP1: “First, to explain the difference between SP1 and the June CU. The recommended approach is to apply Service Pack 1 and the June CU into an environment together.” Key References: Office Sustained Engineering • Announcing SP1 for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 • SharePoint 2010 SP1 and the June Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 • Stephan Gobner’s blog from Sustained Engineering is a good reference as well.. he’s put out detail on SP1 and June CU End to End: Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 (white paper) Downloading SP1 1. • 36. Service Pack 1 - Site Recycle Bin - Bill Baer - Site Home - TechNet Blogs samedi 2 juillet 2011 07:58 Service Pack 1 - Site Recycle Bin Service Pack 1 introduces long awaited Site Recycle Bin functionality that enables self-service recovery of site collections and sites. In the past IT Professionals were tasked with restoring entire databases to recover deleted site collections and sites and would generally require expensive restore environments to support the task. Now in Service Pack 1 administrators can quickly and easily recover site collections and sites accidentally deleted by their owners in a process similar to that of the Recycle Bin we have for Lists, Libraries, and Documents. The Site Recycle Bin leverages Gradual Site Delete through implementing a delay between Gradual Site Delete and permanent deletion of the deleted Site Collection. User Interface Users are presented with new text when deleting Sites instructing users that all site content will be sent to the site collection Recycle Bin (see Figure 1 Deleting http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam). Figure 1 Deleting http://sharepoint.contoso.com/customers/Fabrikam Site Restore Site Collection administrators can restore deleted Sites in the same manner through which Items, Lists, and Libraries are restored through the Recycle Bin; however, the size of the Site is not reported through the user interface which differs from content to include Items, Lists, and Libraries. To restore a Site, the Site Collection administrator selects the checkbox next to the Site to be restored and selects Restore Selection (see Figure 2 Restoring http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam). • 37. Figure 2 Restoring http://sharepoint.contoso.com/sites/customers/Fabrikam NOTE In the event the Site has been recreated using the same Url, the Site must first be renamed or deleted for the restore to succeed; however, when restoring My Site personal sites, any newly created My Site personal site using the same Url as the Site to be restored is overwritten. The Site Recycle Bin in SharePoint 2010 leverages the retention policies specified at the Web application level for the Recycle Bin in SharePoint 2010. Object Model SPWebApplication.GetDeletedSites(Url) returns a SPDeletedSitesCollection that contains all SPDeletedSites with the specified Url. SPDeletedSiteCollection SPDeletedSiteCollection represents a collection of SPDeleteSite objects or Site Collections that are associated with a particular Web application, including a top-level Web site and all its sub-sites. SPDeletedSite SPDeletedSite represents a collection of deleted sites in a Web application, including a top-level Web site and all its subsites. SPDeletedSite Properties SiteId returns the Site Id (GUID) associated with the specified SPDeletedSite. Url returns the Url associated with the specified SPDeletedSite. ContentDatabaseId returns the Id of the Content Database associated with the deleted Site. Restore restores the deleted site collection.
