1. 2. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Socioeconomic/Theory Basics
Our media product represents the socioeconomic structure in that it
connotes the typical reformer/explorer interests. This social group
does not follow the typical ‘mainstreamer’ music type therefore
making them anti materialistic, in other words they do not follow the
crowd which is exactly what we have tried to portray through our
product. I tried to incorporate my own individuality into my product
by adding a female artist onto the front cover instead of the typical
man. This shows me going against the hegemonic Marxist theory of
representation and therefore connoting the typical personality
features of this psychographic group, the aim of this front cover was to
empower woman within the industry, it is very male dominated
therefore by adding this is it will create more of a feminist feel to the
magazine and potentially encourage a wider female based audience in
comparison to the current male one.
3. Subverting
As well as this we have subverted from the stereotypical
representation of men having power, by producing a magazine
promoting woman as a leader we were able to create a more gender
equal magazine allowing it to reach a wider social group and therefore
allow a wider target audience. This will in turn increase our gross
profit. We are also able to reach out to younger audience due to our
representation of women; girls are becoming increasingly strong
within all areas of society allowing them to have more individuality
and therefore more confidence in subverting the stereotypical
expectation of females liking pop music. My double page spread
narrative also connotes to my empowering females theme in that it
talk about a girl ‘going solo’ in the music business, although it is usually
a male dominated genre my narrative clearly shows the main band
member being confident and strong opposing the hegemonic Marxist
theory and further empowering woman over all.
4. Composition
Our composition also follows the stereotypes for the social
group we are aiming at. These types of people are usually
known for having tattoo’s and piercings. Although we could
not incorporate this into our magazine we were able to follow
a similar facial expression. In general a well-known magazine
of this genre will have a informal facial expression where as
new or less well known magazines stick the typical ‘grumpy’
or ‘serious’ facial expression in order to connote to the
stereotypical social expectation. This causes us to develop our
magazine further into the genre as it will create an theme for
us to follow as time progresses, we can develop to be more
individual as a brand as our popularity increases however
sticking to the typical features is currently vital to our success.
